The livin' is easy

In the sweetness of July, nothing seems to matter -- not high gas prices, the dumb New Yorker cover, nor the Fannie and Freddie bailout.

The letters thread is now closed.

Fish are jumpin'

And Gary is high

That pappa's rich

And Barrack is good lookin'

So hush you Guatemalans

Don't you cry.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 08:05 PM

Sweet

I'll hang out on Garrison's porch any day of the week. Especially in July.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 08:09 PM

New Yorker cover is fine

I get it.

Really folks...

The livin' is easy, but the sight is sharp

That Mr. Keillor's neighbor is taking his daughters to Guatemala as much for them as for the Guatemalans is important. They likely will see things that will change their viewpoint for the rest of their lives. This is direct, private, personal, effective action to humanize the world just a little more.

What a great Dad! If the planet is saved, it will be because of people like him.

Just in case you're listenin' up there

Please, God, not another dumb white guy in the Oval Office. Please, please, please, please, please...

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 09:10 PM

He is indeed, absolutely,

One of Us, in ways that will be vitally comforting in our serious striving ahead to kill the enemies, to pay the price, as our God guides us. A leader who is so like us, validating us, protecting against inner dissonance, soothing, like a little wine, a hymn, a victory, some euphoria, like a little dementia.

Sitting on the screened porch in July.... (lazy hired hands talked about Garrison in West Virginia)

Just last eve that's what happened. My son was pushing a wood handle furor. No mule. It was just pure human energy.

I disrupted the planting.

I brought Belgium ales.

It's a barter for dinner.

~

Yea. Phil Gramm :`Americans are whiners? Humph. And P. Gramm's got his loot hidden, lucre in a overseas,

secret bank account.

Repugnance. vnegar.

wretched wine. flea.

bad yeast. rat floats.

Sip a gramm? rot gut.

I'll pass, no thank you.

... off-topic... I like when the " Born on This Day" and daily poetry reads come accidently via the truck radio when I'm in route to the valley farm to get out "the whip" and order the labor bumpkins around. I'll say:~I heard Garrison Keillor is coming to West Virginia! Yip. Hip. huh. Yap. dada. duh. dada!

My gads. In August I heard you say` "The Prairie Home Companion" will be in "Wild Wonderful West Virginia?"

Please hold a few tickets at the door? Maybe Meryl Streep will be there? I hope it's possible to be there too. Serious. I'll bring a Blueberry and Rhubarb Pie. How about a six-pack of Ketchup and a six-pack of Leffe Abbey Ale?

If the creek don't rise, a few farmers would love to be there.

I can make loud gas pain sounds. okay? Thy are sorta fragrant?

That just an opinion. I'm glad no one was under my blanket last night.

Blueberry and beer gas won't kill you. P. Gramm will. I hope it's possible...

Explain to me again...

...how is it a "lovely moment" when McCain reveals himself once again to be at least the equal of G.W. Bush when it comes to clueless bumbling prevarication, and maybe surpasses him in clumsy inarticulate chicanery.

Stop grinning about Viagra like a 3rd grader and cut through the fakery. Or maybe it takes one whimsical old coot with a 1000-yard stare to appreciate another.

You know you're spoiled when

You bring your kids to Guatemala to teach them a lesson on how spoiled they are.

The only thing more spoiled?

When you make money writing an article for Salon about how your fellow spoiled neighbor is taking his children to Guatemala to teach them a lesson on how spoiled they are.

Obama isn't one of us. And neither is Garrison Keillor.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 05:14 AM

Correct again!

Garrison Keillor has an unequallled way of finding just the right words on most any subject. I love his sense of humor and level headedness. Rush Limbaugh and talk hosts like him and of course those at FOX News could learn from him. But then they are catering to a different audience that would not like Keillor's approach.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 05:39 AM

Keillor is dumb, not the New Yorker

The New Yorker cover was a brilliant piece of satire. So of course Keillor wouldn't recognize that. He probably thinks that Jonathan Swift really meant that the Irish should eat their children.

Isn't anyone else getting tired of this phony?

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 06:14 AM

Yawn...

The "sweetness of July" nonsense can't mask the fact that this is yet another laundry list of complaints. I am surprised he didn’t bring up the overweight Harley riders who inconvenienced him on his trip to D.C. We should be thankful he's not droning on about his daughter again. When did Mr. Lake Wobegon turn into a tiresome, whining coot? The Current Occupant ruined this country and your daughter makes you revel in the splendor of life. We get it. Move on.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 06:46 AM

Triumph of the audacity of the will?

Keillor finds comfort in "Barack's" huge crowds, and pooh-poohs the notion that Obama's decision to sell the Fourth Amendment for telecom contributions matters. OK.

But isn't there something just a bit troublesome about the Obama campaign's decision to stage-manage a massive worship service for Obama at Mile-High stadium when he accepts the nomination?

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 06:53 AM

Column

Yep.

Who Turned Up The Heat?

O-blah-blah-blah-bla-mA.

What do we realy know about this guy?

A one-term Senator from Illinios.

I'm supposed to trust this guy with the keys to the Country?

Dude, I don't know ya.

Can we all agree on this?

I've heard of "one-trick-ponies" that have a thicker resume(ouch).

Why all the overzealous cheerleading from the bleachers and front porches?

You know, Obama has a lot of ability and raw talent.

It just hasn't had time, he just hasn't put in the time, to foster any kind of trust factor..shoot, if you put Obama and the salesman in the telephone area over at Best Buy together I could honestly say my knowledge of their positions on global events is at even par..and that's scary.

To run for high office you need a tangible record, one candidate has the goods, the other, doesn't.

I think the Post Master General in my locale would have more government experience than the candidate from the Greater Chicago area...and yet..I don't see his worthy name at the top of a National Party's ticket.

"Oh, say does that Star Spangled banner yet wave, oer the land of the free or the home of the dazed?"

I'm supporting John McCain and I hope Mitt Romney.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 07:25 AM

Ew.

Because, cookkenusa, try to wrap your head around this - we don't need a dottering, ignorant, possibly mentally ill old stinking REPUBLICAN in the White House. They have done enough damage to this country. They are incompetent, greedy, sex-addled fools, living in the closet, who don't care about women, minorities, pollution, global warming, or anything else except lining their own pockets. McCain will not win. He cannot win. The future of the country is at stake, and if he does win we are all surely, surely doomed. With Obama, there MAY be a chance for the country. Even if we are still doomed, at least there won't be a Republican stinking up the joint.

Mr. Keillor, enjoyed your article. I find July nights, and days, very ...trying...but I know they won't last long. Let's all try to find some sweet, easy peace and vote and hope for a better future.
