Keillor must have written this post in the full knowledge that it would be divisive and irritating. Let's not give in to the call to flood the comment sheets with justifiable outrage.
Some people like bikes. Some people like the Impresssionists. A few like both, and a great many like neither. None of this is right or wrong; it's different hobbies and different tastes. I know people who are so passionate about fancy mice shows that you wouldn't believe it. You don't have to agree with it--they enjoy it, and it gives them a community of like-minded people to socialize with. In our area, everything like biker groups is so looked down on that if you don't sit in church you basically have no social life. Sure it's a bland monoculture--is that what Keillor would prefer?
A Degas lover who spouts off about how he hates bikers crossing his path on the way to the museum is going to sound like an elitist prig, and end up reinforcing the image of art patrons as ivory tower stuck-ups who can't be bothered with the common folk.
Mission accomplished for Keillor if that's what he wanted.
Thanks for making even more "uncool" to enjoy museums than it already is, Garrison! Way to go!
The youth of the country will undoubtedly flock to the Smithsonian after hearing such an eloquent post.
Me, I feel like going out and revving up an old Indian and going for a spin now.
