Only Problem I have with Gary is his Jew Hating. While I'm not very fond of his writing, I don't have issues with him outside of this.
Greenwald also has a problem with Jews, but often I find his writing on other topics to be exceedingly well thought out and researched and enjoyable to read. I even make a note to compliment him on some of his articles. I just wish he'd apply the same standards to issues concerning Israel. I know he's capable of it.
You'll also note, that even with Jew Hating posters, I don't carry that over to threads that have nothing to do with Jews. I don't have a personal problem with them, I just think Jew Hating posts or articles should not go unchallenged.
I don't dismiss posts or articles by Jew Haters just because of their stance on Jews. I'll objectively review their post, then reply.

It really means "People who's ancestors were Jewish but the current generation is probably 2 or 3 generations removed from that". They are no more Jewish than any random stranger in the street. And it's representative of nothing at all.

Should it even bother to protect people? Why have police - most people don't get murdered? Why have seatbelts? Why have the FDA? Why have any laws at all? If there is no duty on the state to protect its citizens then you should say that. Of course when people take matters in their own hands you'll criticize the Jews for doing that as well. Yes, Greenwald has a problem with Jews. Whether Greenwald himself is a practicing Jew, or of Jewish descent, I don't know nor care. His religion or his background are of no concern to me.
While I've seen people post that Greenwald was asking for people to confirm if they are Jewish or not on his blog, I didn't personally see this. (which would make me doubt he is Jewish if this is true)
Also, it's not at all unheard of for some Jews to be Jew Hating. The most extreme religious Jews see their exile as God given divine punishment for their sins, and they oppose Israel as an affront to God. Others may hate their brethren for other reasons.
Finally, last name is little indication of background as well, unless you think Alfred Rosenberg (died Oct 16, 1946) was Jewish.

Sadly, what's happening in Gaza right now doesn't even make the top ten list of current civilian deaths from political violence. Much less the worst in the "history of mankind"

It's not in the top ten. Sadly much of the suffering in the World gets no attention.
How much press does the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army. Ugandan Rebel group) get?
You'd think that a group that kidnappers hundreds of children less than 10 years of age, the brainwashes them and makes them kill their own parents, might at least get enough press that people have heard of the group.
Yet, I doubt that 1 American in 1000 could tell you who Joseph Kony is, despite his group hacking to death an estimate 485 people around Christmas 2008.
By hacked to death, I mean people rounded up in churches and literally cut to pieces with machetes.
So, 500 civilian in Gaza get killed in 17 days of conflict (where they are not the direct targets) and the story is carried everywhere, but 485 people get hacked to death in a couple of days (and the civilians are the only targets) and the press can hardly be bothered to write a single story.
