The Syrian army put down a political 'rebellion' in the city of Hama in 1982. Somewhere between 7 and 30,000 people were killed. Compare that to 1970 when Yasser Arafat tried to overthrow the Jordanian King. The ensuing civil war killed about 30,000 Palestinians and Jordanians. Compare that to the 1962 Egyptian war in Yemen which has a documented history of the Egyptian army using chemical weapons on civilian populations. Compare that to the fundamentalist war in Algeria in the 1990s where upwards of 150,000 people died in the sectarian violence. Compare that to the end of the Libyan-Chad war where there is documented evidence that Libya used chemical weapons on civilian populations.

Please spare me the purported outrage and handwringing of the anarcho-terrorist sympathizers. It's all straight up fucking bullshit. Unless and until they hang a Jew for it, it doesn't exist. So fuck 'em and their agitprop.

  • Corrections Needed

    1) The refugee camp name is generally Romanized as Shatila--one "l", not two.

    2) The massacre occurred in September 1982, 26.5 years ago, not 28 years ago as Kamiya repeatedly says.

  • Well he did it too...

Wallaby my kids stopped using that excuse around the age of 4 or 5. I see you haven't graduated from that level yet. What upsets so many of us here is that US tax dollars as well as US weapons and political support enable these war crimes. That makes us culpapble too. Shame on you for having so little regard for human life that you can dismiss its loss so casually. Shame on you for using the allegation of anti-semitism to cover up the crimes of the State of Israel.

I've never heard about any secret bombings carried out by the British secret service in Ireland, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if dirty tricks were used to discredit 'the other side'. The South African secret service did the same thing to discredit the ANC.

If true, the point is that it was SECRET. The British government would have known this was a shameful and illegal act and, if they had been found out, would have been rightly condemned round the world AND THROUGHOUT BRITAIN. The Israeli government, on the other hand, is quite open about their bombings of Palestinians, and this is cheered on by most Israelis and Americans.

There's something morally abhorrent about that.

  • a little joke

Time for a tasteless (yet pointed) joke inspired by George W. Bush, his neocon masters, and the unsavory situation in Gaza (where about 1/3 of the dead, more than 300, are kids):

    - What do you call killing a lotta children to prevent terror?

    - One seriously preemptive strike.

I could follow this up by recalling a certain story from the Gospels, one also involving a bunch of dead children, and its long-term aftermath, but I shall refrain from it lest I be called a fascist (or such) for bringing up the Bible.

  • About that Israeli Kindergarten

I understand that there were no casualities and that since the "rocket" was "...made out of sewer pipe, propelled by a mixture of fertilizer and alcohol..." and had no guidance system, that kindergarten was not deliberately targeted. Of course the morality of sending homemade rockets willy nilly into civilian areas has to be severely questioned. But so does the morality of sending top of the line well targeted, far more destructive missiles into areas where one knows for certain that children are present and will be killed and maimed for sure. Please don't ask me to be more horrified by the intent of one against the intent of the other. Although I have to be more horrified by the fact that the Israelis can inflict far more harm by their so-called "self defense" than the Palestinians can by theirs.

  • About that Israeli Kindergarten

You make a good point, but the issue is still that Hamas seeks to kill Israeli civilians and seeks to increase Palestinian civilian deaths by hiding behind women & children. Their command bunker is under a hospital in Gaza.

Palestinians know that Israel tries to avoid killing civilians, I know this because they go up on the roofs to act as human shields secure in the knowledge that Israel will call off the bombing (80% called off) if there are people up there. In other words, Palestinians are betting their lives on the fact that Israel seeks to avoid killing civilians. There is no moral equivalent here.

  • misaac

    What bothers me is that,

    1) I don't believe that "collateral damage" is ever completely justified. Even if cowards are hiding behind the bodies of innocents, there is still a choice. You can withdraw your civilian population out of the range of homemade missiles and continue to use non-lethal methods of coercion. And as one person has pointed out you could use more of the carrot than the stick.

    2) How do I know that what is asserted about "human shields" is the truth? Israel has not allowed the foreign press access to Gaza. We have no way of knowing if indeed Hamas' headquarters is actually under a hospital. We have only Israel's assertion to that effect. And should I be afraid of being accused of anit-semitism because I question that?

I think Israel has fallen into a trap. It has put itself morally into the wrong in the eyes of the world. It may be defiant now but it will pay the price later. Hamas has won, unless Israel changes its tactics.
