Let me pose this question, Where would Germany, Europe as a whole and Russia be if the United States decided that after World War 2 The United States wanted the world to be The United States, we started throwing unarmed people out of their homes, where they had lived for generations and blew them up leaving them homeless so they could sit and watch without food, shelter or even the most basic medical care, as brand new buildings were put up so they could be occupied by your enemy? How far would we have gotten in occupying the world? Israel's pathetic excuse that the Palestinians are occupying their country and that they are a defeated people and deserve everything they get, is so abhorrent that it fills me with the urge to defecate. Never in the history of the world has a country treated a defeated nation the way Israel has treated the Palestinians and been allowed to get away with it, nor, would a country stoop to such a low as to treat another human being with such disrespect and humiliation. To allow Israel to continue this torture of the Palestinians is reprehensible and it has to stop now!
What's depressing about some of the responses to this article is all the 'whataboutery' that just muddies the waters and obscures the major (and legitimate) grievances of the Palestinians, namely the continuing theft of Palestinian land by Israeli settlers, and the hugely disproportionate violence visited by Israel on a largely helpless populace.
I can understand that many Israelis feel embattled, and they have every right to defend themselves, but bombing and occupying Gaza is no way to go about it and is ultimately self-defeating as Gary Kamiya has pointed out.
It's this that Israel critics object to. It's not that we're 'anti-Israel' or 'pro-Palestinian' or, as has been suggested, use it as just another excuse for beating up Israelis, but that this is as barbaric (but more devastating) than any Palestinian suicide bombing.
Israel may be the only democracy in the region, and is inspiring in many ways. But it is overwhelmingly more powerful that the Palestinians and brutal and thuggish actions like these should be condemned loud and clear by everybody, including the US establishment, much as Russia's overreaction to recent Georgian and Chechnyan violence was deplored by the US.
When was the last time we had some F-15s drop some bombs on a reservation?
19th century behavior is not acceptable today.
You are a doctor, right? Check the DSM section on psychopaths.
You have no shame.
If only the quality of scaled balance this Salon piece by G.Kamiya exhibits could be/were to be found within The New York Times and other major American print news media. To be found on major American electronic TV and radio venues from cable news outlets to Clear Channel radio purveyors.
Gary Kamiya has indeed pulled the strands and fabrics of what is ailing Israel and indeed creating a future Israeli political failure outcome due to run amok Israeli militarism, stupidly conducted Israeli domestic politics,a long, illegal and plainly corrupted and war crimes contaminated Israeli occupation of Palestinian West Bank and Gaza.
Juan Cole,on Monday Jan.5,2009,had an interesting observation about what has taken place/who is running American State Department and how this is distorting American foreign policy conduct with Israel and on larger global stages. It is worth a read at www.juancole.com--Monday,Jan.5,2009 comments.
Americans do bear large responsibility for what is befalling Gaza these past days.Americans fund and promote Israeli militarism and what is falling on Gaza is surely American sponsored and approved in ways that only will lead to more 9/11/2001 events coming to American shores.
WashingtonDC is a very corrupt imperial city infested with a very corrupt political regime that both American political parties--GOP and DEM alike--are fully allowing to remain very badly misguided, governed and bound to very dubious premises.
Israel needs a better, smarter friend in America.
America needs a much more moral, ethical and evenly scaled actions taken or not taken Israel.
The Israel rules--as currently known and practiced--in WashingtonDC and in Israel will bring ruination to Israel and WashingtonDC both on many fronts in many terrible ways.
Gary Kamiya appears to get it. Many more will have to get it before what is now falling on Gaza can be prevented.
Gaza right now is a moral, ethical and political disaster for both Israel and WashingtonDC. Not seeing this to be so will doom both Israel and WashingtonDC to greater setbacks, defeats and outcomes of ruination.
Israel IS NOT SUPPOSED TO DEFEND ITSELF.
They are supposed to be slaughtered like in WW2, remember?
something stinks:
First, I am not "your dear." Why do supposedly liberal people always attempt to "put women in their places" by leading with dismissive, sexist language?
"When was the last time we had some F-15s drop some bombs on a reservation?"
So let me get this straight. You're making the argument that YOU don't have to give back your property to the Native Americans because no one bombed them from airplanes? Sorry, that does not get you off the hook.
The fact is that the American Left is smugly urging the Israelis to do something that they, as individuals, would not contemplate for an instant. We call that hypocrisy.
Reading this article I guess its safe to assume that if the author had a terrorist organization over three years send six thousand rockets towards his home and hospitals, schools, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. he would not mind. Hopefully his wife and children would and would also insist our government did whatever they could to stop the terrorists. By this authors rationale we are to blame for Al Queda murdering 3,000 of our fellow citizens. Big bad America. Bad little Israel. How dare they complain about terrorists wanting to murder their men, women, and children!
Palestinians send their children into Israeli schools, busses, restaurants, and supermarkets with bombs strapped to their bodies to kill as many innocent men, women, and children as they possibly can. After the suicide bomber completes their mission of wanton murder of dozens of people the Palestinians dance in the streets and pass out candy celebrating.
Palestinians fire hundreds of rockets into Israeli villages and towns trying to murder as many innocent people as possible and when Israel responds Israel is called the aggressor. The aggressors are the people who have murdered thousands of innocents here on 911, in India, Iraq, Israel, England, Spain, Fiji, The Philippines and six different Moslem countries all in the name of Islam against Jews and Christians. The aggressor is not the nation of Israel, a country the size of New Jersey. It is the Palestinians and Moslems who teach their children, from the time they are born, to hate Jews and Christians.
Have people forgotten that Israel withdrew every settler and every soldier from Gaza three years ago? What did they get in return? Six thousand rockets fired at their civilians the past three years. Let a terrorist group take over Canada or Mexico and begin firing rockets at American cities and let's see how our government responds. People speak about proportionality as though a country has no right to do whatever it can to stop attacks against its own people. Hamas is sworn to the destruction of the State of Israel and Israel has the right to protect its people by any means possible. Period.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
