This is the most in-depth, sophisticated article I've yet to read in Salon. Your analogy to America's genocide against its first inhabitants is not lost on me, an enrolled member of a midwest American Indian Nation. We've been vilified ever since the white man rolled onto the land, called subhumans, savages, terrorists, baby-killers, rapists of virtuous white women, all just because the white man wanted the land, so they made up vile names and took the land violently and illegally. Now the only reason we are even moderately tolerated is because of the advent of Indian casinos. They see more money and resource to be had.
Israel's genocidal practices are wrong, plain and simple. It's a ludicrous travesty to call their actions defensive actions. It is not defense, it is mass murder, like shooting weak, defenseless fish in a barrel, except these just so happen to be a poor starving people. It is blood-lust and rage, nothing even remotely connected to a desire for peace. Just the opposite, it is a desire for death, destruction and chaos. And as you point out, it is counterproductive and stupid, for Israel, America and the world. It is not ensuring peace, it is only ensuring continued violence.
I've never understood America's weak-kneed response to Israel. We call ourselves a great nation, yet we are overwhelmingly controlled by this tiny state, Israel, a state that would be nothing without the massive arms welfare that America annually supplies. We must intervene for peace or cut off the supply of arms.
Keep probing into this Israel myth of the Israel rule, because until America breaks its hold we will continue to be willing slaves to this rogue, blood-thirsty state. Israel is playing us for chumps.

That's not my assertion. My assertion is that anyone who rewards Hamas for using children as human shields is simply encouraging them to use more children as human shields. They put their OWN children in the line of fire just to impress you with Israel's "brutality" and you've fallen for it hook, line and sinker.
Whenever there is an article or discussion thread at all questioning of Israel, there always seems to be a flood of posters with bizarrely Orwellian and Kafkaesque logic defending Israel's most Likudnik positions and flaming any poster who seems to consider the Palestinians to be human beings. It makes me wonder if there is a department of the Mossad monitoring American media, always ready to pounce. Some of the terminology and phrasing can be so similar that one wonders if there aren't agents who maintain ten or fifteen identities and literally work full time monitoring American discussion groups, chat groups, etc.; since mainatining American support is so crucial to Israel that any slide to a balanced stance on the Middle East would be existentially threatening. One wonders too if these agents are paid for with part of the billions in American taxes sent annually to Israel. I've always wondered if some of that money doesn't get funneled back into organizations such as AIPAC to make sure the money keeps flowing. How ironic to be paying to have our own thoughts guided.

Gary, you're forgetting that, unlike the Europeans who settled America, the Jews used to live in Palestine thousands of years ago and were expelled. If that weren't the case this would be a whole different ballgame. That fact doesn't justify war, but it's essential in understanding the motivations of the parties and what they might be willling to agree upon. Nice try.

But to the Prohibition issue - the temperance movement had been around since the civi war and was moribund and the turf of the holier than thous and racists. Then Henry Ford started selling motor vehicles that could run on both gasoline and alcohol. This meant that a farmer could use agricultural waste, put it in a still and cook up some fuel to run the tractors, trucks and cars. Standard Oil did not appreciate this one bit, so they revitalized the temperance movement and teamed it up with anti-Catholic and immigrant bigotry, especially against the Irish, the Italians and other ethnic groups that were known to like wine and spirits (can you think of one that might be important to you?) and the new field of Scientific Management (efficiency experts and the like) to sell the nation on banning alcohol in order to guarantee their monopoly over fuel for motor vehicles while telling everyone it was to make AMerica sober and right.
