The Israel rules America's support of the Gaza attack proves once again that our mythical image of Israel has blinded us to its faults -- a myopia with devastating consequences for both countries.

  • “… one does not get to choose one's enemies ……?

But one’s own actions may certainly encourage them, as I think you go on to admit: “more and more Muslims are turning to religious radicalism. Israel knows this story only too well because it helped create it”. If there is one common quality shared by Israel and the United States, as the rest of the world sees it, it’s a sort of national infantilism where it’s always someone else’s fault without a glimmer of self-examination. Americans wander around Europe piteously complaining that no-one likes them without bothering to lower their voices to complain about anything that doesn’t suit or flatter them while declining to understand whatever they’re trampling over because it’s not what they’re used to “at home”. At best, they’re a subject of near-universal mockery; at worst they’re genuinely ill-treated and robbed on the principle that it serves them right. The greater part of the world despises or hates Americans, not because they’re all necessarily bad, but because to ordinary eyes they mostly appear so stupid, uncivilised and insensitive. And one may also ask, since generally mild national or ‘racist’ antipathies are as old as time, why the bloated expression ‘anti-Semitic’ or even anti-American should apparently carry more significance than, say anti-Arabism or anti-anything else. If naïve and self-righteous feelings are expressed with too much vain conviction it’s hardly surprising that they might be returned, and yes, with vengeance.

  • Israel rules and Iran

The point of this article is exactly what President Ahmadinajad was trying to make in his infamous speech in which he said the "holocaust was a myth." It was not a statement of holocaust denial but an attempt to explain that israel has turned the holocaust into an excuse that justifies its own atrocious behavior. But his true intent has been inverted by the same forces described by Kamiya. Likewise, Ahmadinajad never said he planned to "wipe Israel off the face of the map" but rather, "the regime which occupies Jerusalem will be removed from the sands of time." Not a threat but a prediction of the ultimate victory of his view of God's justice, not unlike Ronald Reagan's dustbin of History quote.

  • Terrorist????

My mother was a good Christian woman who believed we should defend Israel for biblical reasons at all costs. Which is a lot the same reason people in this country are ignoring Israel's crimes. This is the reason we are ignoring the blatant evils Israel does. And our leaders condemn anyone who points them out like Jimmy Carter. If anyone in this world were doing what they are doing to defenseless people. We would be condemning them, cutting off all aid for their criminal regime and denouncing them to the world. And George Bush would have a reason for once to attack this terrorist nation of Israel. But, because 'God's chosen people' are doing it it's 'defending themselves'. While Israel gets away with 'terrorizing' Palestinians with every human degradation known to man. What we are doing is as criminal as what the Israeli's are doing. They aren't going to stop the rocket attacks this way. All they are doing is making these people more determined to see them destroyed. And for good reason! And in the eyes of the world Israel is not the righteous defender anymore. They are acting little more than Nazi thugs that they have condemned for years. I think in the end they are going to have one huge PR problem. Because a lot of us are seeing this nation of Israel for what it is.

  • Dodging the question of why we don't give back America

    something stinks,

You're still dodging the question. Why haven't you given back your property to the Native Americans? Why do you have one set of rules for Israel, and an entirely different set for yourself?

  • "one does not get to choose one's enemies..."

...but they are the ones you have to make peace with"

The addendum being, I suppose, unless you so utterly and completely obliterate them that their complaints are relegated to history books and you go around complaining about the way other people deal with their enemies.

The United States of America: Genocide free since, uh, whenever it was we stopped.

  • Politics and morals

Politics and morals clash on this issue.

No matter what atrocity Israel commits it is politically incorrect to criticize.

Everyone knows about their nuclear program, but Iran is the bad guy for pursuing nuclear power production.

It is time to clean up the poor image we have, by trying to say the morally correct thing and being fair.

Really? What about China? Has anyone done that to China over their treatment of the Tibetans? Or did the world just attend their giant party?

  • My dear Amy Tuteur, MD,

"You're still dodging the question. Why haven't you given back your property to the Canaanites? Why do you have one set of rules for Canaanites, and an entirely different set for yourself?"

    FTFY.

BTW - The genocide against the Native Americans was a little too successful for your fantasy to be realized, but I certainly think we can give them back Manhattan and Florida.

    /RIMSHOT

    Got a problem with that?

As for Hollywood, I think the Mexicans have already stated their intentions about reclaiming the Southwest and who is going to stop them? The IDF?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

You see, demographics have a way of changing right under your feet and in 20 years there will be more Iraeli Palestinians than Israeli Jews.

What are you going to do then?

"Quick, kill them all before there are more of them than us!"

Palestinians are the native indigenous Hebrew population who stayed and converted. How many modern Jews actually believe any of that religious nonsense anyway? It is just culture. There is no mouontain god who granted anyone any deeds.

You can't undo genocide, but you can complain about it while it is in progress.

  • a better mind game

    & potentially less self-satisfying:

"You live in a country where almost everyone is from somewhere else. The indigenous population has been shunted away or killed off. The remaining indigenous population has been mythologized & romanticized by much of the world. It seems everyone in the world hates you."

Congratulations! You're an American! Now leave your home & go back to Europe. That goes for you, too, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Iceland, ummm... Entire Western & Much of the Southern Hemispheres.

What's that? You have no place else to go? You want to stay where you are because it's your home, too? What if we killed you? You'd certainly be gone then. Everything would be back to the way it was, then. Which was certainly better, I bet.

What? You don't want us to kill you? Who do you think you are - Israel?
