...I just can't be afraid of these two. They both remind me of Bush when thy speak...missed lines, lies, nonsensical phrases. Have to agree with Gary, though; most indies I talk to are put off by her. Independents tend to be the smartest, and most critical voters, with a good does of morons thown in for spice. Intrade, where you get to put your cash on the line, had the race even for about 15 minutes this morning, with Obama pulling away to a 7 point lead at the moment. Not to say that markets can't be manipulated, though.....I just think all the hoopla about her is to capture eyeballs. The next strategy is to have her bake cookies for Track as he goes off to Iraq; isn't she lovely?, not a bulldog at all...
The point is not whether or not Kamiya is right about the response of some conservative men to Palin. I would even wager that some progressive men have the same fantasies. The problem is that this is the absolutely wrong article for Salon and it is unabashedly sexist towards women who seek public office.
For months, Joan Walsh pointed out -- mostly correctly -- sexism directed at Hillary Clinton. It is utterly hypocritical to now run this article.
Moreover, it can only hurt the candidate that you claim you want to see elected. Do you want to be amused at the expense of votes lost in Obama's column?
Here is a link to a story by regular Salon contributor Gary Kamiya. "Sarah Palin as the dominatrix." Complete with insulting cartoonish photoshop image. Just the kind of "Palin Derangement Syndrome" story your 1.5 billion readers might get a kick out of.
Are you just TRYING to give fodder to the right wing - something totally slanderous that they can talk about for days on end? As my husband who often listens to right wing radio but isn't a right winger says - just ignore her! Focus on McCain and the issues and the Bush administration. Palin is a deliberate distraction from those real life fiascos and you are buying into it to the literal detriment of the cause of truth and light.
How would you feel if Hillary Clinton was depicted as wearing bondage leather and holding a riding crop?
But that's the thing. Unlike Palin, Mrs. Clinton isn't a radical right-wing religious Darth Cheney wannabe with delusions of adequacy. And that makes all the difference.
If it's any consolation, I've tended to think of Palin not as a pit bull with lipstick, and not as a wacky guest on Jerry Springer, and not as the Wicked Witch of the Far Northwest, but as a golden retriever who's been taught to bark on command and not make messes on the floor.
Kind of makes you want to go to the pound for a dog and name it "Sarah", doesn't it?
I know everyone here thinks im a crazy conservative... but im not. im gay for that matter, too.
BUT- I do take issue with articles talking about Palin being an extreamist.
I grew up in an Assembly of God church, and while I don't attend Church anymore, It's not an extreamist church.
If you grew up in this church, her statements about praying that god's will be done in Iraq doesnt seem weird at all.
If you actually get into doctrine, Assembly of God is actually pacifist. And it makes perfect sense to me that the soliders over there should be doing gods will when they are obviously doing very dirty, bad things ie Abu Grhaib and torturing people.
So I think its really unfair to call her extreamist. Assemblies of God is not for me, but its by no way as scary as the southern baptists, for example.
And the whole thing about speaking in toungs is overdone. My parents never did it and were hardcore members. Only my grandfather spoke in toungs when he had Alzethimers.. hahaha. oh, the memories.
Oh, sure. Let us destroy the village in order to save it. Obama would condemn that image and you know it.
Does anyone remember the photo on the cover of the February issue of Spy Magazine? Namely, a whip-wielding dominatrix with Hillary's head? Someone would have to ask her again to be certain, but from what I heard, she got a kick out of it.
1.5 Billion potential page hits, huh? Just the kind of 'punishment' Salon is looking for.
I only saw the picture and headline.
Hmmmmmm ......... I think you may be right ........ its certainly keeping the heat and attention off of McCain ....
Just the kind of "Palin Derangement Syndrome" story your 1.5 billion readers might get a kick out of.
Sure hits close to home on this one, doesn't it Bushite?
You're not one of these wimpy thin-skinned neocons who can dish it out but can't take it, are you?
As someone who found the Obama New Yorker cover amusing I find this just as harmless. Lighten up people.
Firstly, Photoshopping is about as mature an act as sticking gum in the republican's hair. Secondly, really? At Salon?
It doesn't matter who wins, we're fucked.
Namely, a whip-wielding dominatrix with Hillary's head? Someone would have to ask her again to be certain, but from what I heard, she got a kick out of it.
So did Bill. I hear tell it's put the spark back in their sometimes rocky marriage.
Bill: "I deserved that. Ouch! I deserved that too."
Of course, you'd have to be a completely new to Salon not to realize that this column and picture would be rightfully slammed by almost every letter writer. It's one thing if Salon aimed at being like The Onion, which strives for a parody that can almost be mistaken for real at times. To my recollection though, Salon has tried to be a progressive outlet. One that tries to cut through the bullshit and spin of the MSM. So much for that online magazine I once knew.
Seriously, I subscribed for a few years because I felt it was worth paying for articles that paid attention to what this country was turning into with a guy like Bush in the white house. I would gladly continue to pay if this were still that site. Sadly, it's not. Salon is now more like the equivalent of The Jerry Springer Show.
Joan, you no longer have the right to criticize the media for their supposedly awful treatment of Clinton. Not after allowing this picture. I mean you can, but you can't expect anyone to take you seriously.
By the way, I'm not offended by the article or the picture, but I recognize how monumentally stupid it is to run them both given the climate of the race and this country. The article is dumb enough, but the picture really seals the deal. As many have noted, you have now given red meat to right wing talking heads looking for more misdirection of the issue. Oy, Joan, how can you be so blind.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
