The dominatrix

Sarah Palin is trying to seduce independent voters. But she comes across like a whip-wielding mistress who wants to discipline a naughty America.

The letters thread is now closed.

To AKA Smith

Sadly, you're right. Plenty of women (not just PUMA's) really do want a woman president (or vice-president), and this type of article is like a punch in the gut, a strong reminder of why having a woman in the Oval Office is so important, even if only on a symbolic level.

I bet it will push at least a few undecided women straight into the McCain camp.

Come on

This is what passes for political analysis?!

Thanks, for both pushing gender equality back another decade, and for giving McCain/Palin a legitimate grief against the "librul meedia."

Gary's got it right

Thanks for a great read Gary. I wish I'd read it before watching the Republican convention. It would have made that sea of idiots chanting "drill baby drill" more humorous than scary.

article weak

Look, I hate Palin and all that she stands for. But think it hurts Salon and liberals generally to post that image of her as dominatrix of moose. The contents of the story likewise strike me as mysogynistic and poor quality. Sorry, Gary, I usually like your articles.

Rednecks Enjoy ‘Obama Monkey’ T-Shirt

Here’s the latest cuteness from America’s fat dumb racists: It is a t-shirt, stealing the trademarked children’s character “Curious George,” with the addition of a possibly insincere “Obama in ‘08″ slogan. Get it, because black people are like monkeys! Jesus fucking christ. Can we just have Robert Byrd give his Klan robe to Hillary and get it over with? Burn a cross on the White House lawn and call it a day?

My Response:

Don't dish it out if you don't want it back!

Gary Kamiya's got it right!

As a man who works with many very conservative men, I can add quite a lot more to the point that Kamiya is making. The extremists can's stop talking about about "Hawt" Palin is, and how excited they are that she is a "pit bull with lipstick". And yes, many of them have expressed how much they want to be dominated sexually by Palin. There is no doubt that the extremists have a huge collective woody for Palin, and at this point I think she will win a lot of the single red-neck male vote.

@The chick is clearly iron-willed and rigidly dogmatic.

Quote:

"The chick is clearly iron-willed and rigidly dogmatic."

The democrats are going to have to fight fire with fire .....barrage for barrage.

The democrats are going to have to learn quickly to deliver distorted half-truths in an angry and self-righteous tone.

If Obama thinks this behavior might undermine his "softspoken, rational" image, turn the job over to someone who can and will do it.

Why isn't Joe Biden doing this ?

This is an old tried and true political technique used in the last days of an election.

This is not about truth and the republicans know that ...... this is total war.

Each day, a different salvo of accusations is thrown before the last ones can be rebutted.

The opponent has no time to catch his breath, let alone persuade the electorate that statements even 2 or 3 days old are untrue as new threats have already been uttered.

Its jabs and short soundbites ...... the democrats must adopt the same tactics or risk failure ....... this is not time for "civilized" discussion.

The media, hungry for any news, should welcome a daily news conference with Biden where a couple of discouraging words could be planted.

Mr. Kamiya is Right!

Of course he's right. He got the idea from me:

... black leather and a whip would compliment her Darth Cheney persona.

Darth Cheney in black leather and a whip.

I don't mind Salon's authors borrowing my ideas, but I do wish they'd throw me a bone once in a while, if only to prevent me from becoming petulant from a lack of attention.

No

Please take the photoshopped Palin image down from the front page.

Let me explain it to you this way. How would you feel if Hillary Clinton was depicted as wearing bondage leather and holding a riding crop? Would you have wagged your finger at it? If so, then the same standards apply for Palin.

Monday, September 8, 2008 07:45 PM

@Smith: you may be right

I was reading some of the war room posts today about various Palin trivia and thinking, What is this crap? What about Biden on Iraq? What about Fannie and Freddie? - there's a tsunami racing towards shore. How come Palin is clueless about them?

I wrote to a friend of mine that while Joan may like Obama, she doesn't seem to have much skin in the game. She can take whatever editorial policy she wants to, and we will voice of opinions of same, but I am wondering. I'm not one of those that think a McCain presidency will at the same time somehow be weak and ineffectual and still manage to fight off the agenda and appointees of his party.

This kind of article is for knuckleheads that have already made up their minds. It's going to do less than zero to persuade anybody sitting on the fence. And each side needs each one of those fence sitters.

Monday, September 8, 2008 07:48 PM

dominatrix of moose.

But that's FUNNY.

(And I'm afraid that McCain/Palin will win...and THAT will be the End Times.)

Couple points.

1. How much influence does Salon have that people are concerned about this article? Seems a few hundred people post when really stirred up. Some HuffPost items get THOUSANDS. And I don't think HuffPost and its readers will influence much of anything. (Like, preaching to the choir and all that.)

2. Hey, Salon runs plenty plenty articles about zee issues.

3. The psycho-sexual undertones brought to the surface are very interesting.

Okay, that's three points. (My husband always complained that "a couple" means two. Like him and me. No third parties, please.)

4. One more point. Goddam but we need a laugh. This whole election scene is so awful and scary that we need an occasional time-out.

But, 5. - There are sexual undertones to this whole scene ... with Obama too, I think. With Biden and McCain, not so much. (Tho all that dwelling on torture and imprisonment has some S/M echoes...)
