Letters to the Editor

Bravo, Gary
Wonderful essay.
To me, the real issue is whether or not we see patriotism as an ideal to which we aspire or a totem to salute and, when we're in the mood, to use as a club to beat those who see America differently.
My patriotism is all about our ideals. I am proud of what America has been trying to be but I am not proud of how badly and how often we fall short.
A real patriot insists we can do better.
But if you want to see patriotism through your tenth glass of beer, drooling neanderthal support for American thuggery and butchery, go ahead.
What happens in 2008, one way or another, cannot stop the march of history. The expiration date for right wing propaganda is coming along soon enough.
