On p.l5 Bruce Dixon refers to Native Americans. Aren't the people now called "Latinos" also indigenous to what was once called The Americas?
The United States was formed piecemeal but there were people living in the Americas long before the European colonisers arrived. If you take the whole of North and South America as one continent out of the five, the majority of the Mexican people are Native American, descended from the Aztecs and others. It seems that, in the next few decades, the people whose lineage is south of the Rio Grande will be the largest of the minorities in the US, with the political clout that this would entail.
