The Democratic race is starting to resemble a compulsory oppressed minorities course taught by political consultants. Let's stop squabbling and elect the best nominee.

  • I'm enquiring (or "inquiring" as Americans spell it), not judging

This discusion, diatribe or "chat" began in relation to Gary Kamiya's article on the Democratic nomination which has stirred up animosities about race and gender. As a woman, I cannot claim complete impartiality, particularly coming from a society in which a poweful Church saw women's role as fundamentally reproductive or in Hamlet's words "Get thee to a nunnery" but I'm not a feminist in the strict sense of the word, as I'm too quirky to agree with any type of dogma, religious or otherwise. I never thought I would defend Hillary Clinton and I do so only now because there are people in your media who are guttersnipes and have slandered her as a woman. I've made the point that Barack Obama is unknown in Europe and, from your media, we are getting nothing but gush, so much so that an article in "Newsweek" seemed more like an adoring letter form a lovesick adolescent than an interesting piece of journalism. That was written by a man. Camille Paglia, writing for Salon, can't get enough of herself but is also suffering from a scoolgirl crush while "Vanity Fair" is also full of toe-curling blather on the same topic.

I've asked a number of questions on the points raised by Gary Kamiya but NOT ONE of them has been answered. Some people have sincerely tried to put forward a viewpoint, a few have indulged in tirades and Redfinger has now come on with some more twaddle which has nothing at all to do with the debate which should be how your media is subverting the democratic process. Fortunately, on this site there is a minimum of scatalogical language which, it seems, is the best some idiots can come up with, but there is also a remarkable reluctance to deal with any logical questions, particularly if they come from a non-American. Canadians are North Americans too but, from the tenor of missives (not missiles) from people like Thrasher, Canadians should go and boil their heads like the rest of us and meekly submit to U.S. domination all over the globe. The questions I've raised on Gary Kamiya's article seem to have nonplussed, embarrassed or annoyed the vast number of those posting on this site. I've heard about the "dumbing down" of American education and now I've seen the proof of it. For someone who has enjoyed the stories of John Steinbeck, grappled with Emily Dickinson's poetry, it gives me no pleasure to say that. Yes, the Chinese are in the ascendant in the sciences and the arts, and will put on a fantastic show for the world in this year's Olympics. They don't seem too bothered about racism and feminism, being more interested in exploiting mineral wealth in Africa. I admire Chinese culture, I understand that they are academically brilliant, but I'd be happier if the U.S. regained some of its prestige. I don't speak Mandarin and it would be much too difficult for me to learn at this stage in my life.

  • I love Canadians.. I just wish they would get over thier low self esteem act about USA

we are so tired of them playing the "victim nationhood card" at our expense. If they want to be our doormats that is thier call...

Americans are up to here with being protrayed as the world's bully and evil empire..enough already..

You have weaved this theme constantly in your posts..

  • Thrasher is now thrashing around, impaled by his own arguments

Well, Now it's all coming out. Starting with the ploy that, even in 2008, the U.S. is a dystopian society riddled with racism, Thrasher has now come to the point that his native land is so wonderful that the whole lot of us foreigners, including Canadians, are just jealous of your heaven-on-earth. Even a "privileged white woman" (and I'm quoting Thrasher) such as myself lacks self-esteem because I'm not American and, furthermore, I'm eaten up with envy of Americans of whatever hue. Thrasher continues to move the goal-posts so that I feel a bout of vertigo coming on but I'm nothing if not resolute. The last time I had a look at my self-esteem it seemed in pretty good order. I've done things with my life and not sat around moaning about the Famine, a period when millions of Irish went to the New World. That was then, this is now.

Thrasher's comment on African waifs is discourteous. Those two girls were not waifs but their families were struggling to pay their fees. Thrasher is lucky to have been born in the U.S. where everyone has the right to go to High School but that is not the case in many countries of the world where education is not free. Looking at the world, through the prism of his prejudice, Thrasher either does not know that or is unwilling to admit it. In any case, I now have Thrasher singing "God Bless America" and I'm glad that he's so proud of his native land and its achevements. As for the rest of us sharing the planet, we're watching you with interest, not with envy.

  • maureen: yeah sure .. your interest borders on acute envy.. you resent america that is obvious

given the themes of your posts.

You assumed because as black american I would join on your anti-america vessel becuase of my country's wicked past with regard to Black americans.

You sought I would bond with those poor african children just because we share the same hue and therefore because of your benevolent missionary work( I wager you got paid a fact you have omitted) I would be ready to join in on your envy and angst about my country..

You need to piss on my country to affirm your deflated self image of your own shallow demeanor. Your rants again are a tired theme americans have long ignored for decades.

We know that when you run out of food, and weapons to save you from those who have rejected your selfish nationalism , foreigners like you will come running and pandering to us that we must help you stop the pagans and barbarians at your gates..

No your act is as boring as your present day life of drinking tea and bashing americans who dare to live for life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness..
