Has anyone critiqued the originator of this debate: FOX news?
I keep looking, and no one, including Clinton or Obama talks about Fox news interviewing Clinton to begin with. Clinton went on with Tim Russert about how Obama supporters were distorting her message--(which as an Obama supporter, I found bizarre since I had nothing to do with her comments or with the way they were framed in the media)....why don't the candidates take a second look at the network where it all started?
I mean yesterday I heard on the news that John McCain thinks that the American people will not have a problem with occupying Iraq for the next 50-100 years (I'm not kidding--look it up) and today I read that sweet little Huckabee wants to amend the constitution to be more pleasing to Jesus. The whole campaign has gotten way off message with fairy tales and Clinton bashing and Obamaphobia. Have Clinton supporters forgotten that even if she wins this election, Obama may be her running mate? Or he may--if he continues to create the kind of grassroots following he's already started-- grow into the party candidate in the near future? This bashing of Obama has bothered me probably as much as the bashing of Clinton has bothered her supporters.
It's frustrating. Kamiya, your article struck several chords with me. I hadn't thought of it the way you frame it about people being afraid to express racism in America, and maybe that's why there was such a ferocious response to Obama (who I still contend never brought the subject up on his own).
I hope that voters can focus on the real issues at hand (100 years in Iraq, Corporate Oligarchy and a Jesus-focused constitution). For me it brought it all into focus: as much as Clinton's campaign so far hasn't "inspired" me to cheer for her, I still whole-heartedly cheer for the policies she brings to the table if that's what my vote boils down to. Democrats need to pull together. The flipside is hardly tolerable, if you think about it.

Because it's buried on page 7. You need to see this.
When has Obama done anything to stir the pot?
I haven't heard one word from Obama or one of his spokespeople about race or gender,
Permit me to open your eyes.

There you go, folks, Obama's campaign co-chair - not just some unauthorized supporter - attacking Senator Clinton with not just race and sex, but also flat-out lies.

um.....where were the flat out lies?
Just wondering. I support the Democratic nominee for president and people who have to hate the person who isn't their first choice makes no sense to me (I'm talking about you) unless you're shilling for McCain.
I also thought the first part was funny. Where's the tear lab?
One more thing: let's stop pretending that anyone who criticizes the Clintons (or Obama) needs to be thrown in an obliette. She's not the queen. He's not the black prince. Despite fragile moments on both sides, they are strong candidates and the push pull between the campaigns doesn't have to mean that full-scale Obamaphobia or how-do-we-beat-the-bitch seizes hold of the supporters of opposing campaigns.
Unless you want to think about another 100 years in Iraq you might want to consider Obama your candidate if he wins the nomination. Just a thought!

don't be silly, Thrasher
If you want others to play nicely, you should set the tone. You were the one who implied I was a Nazi first. You might think yourself quite adult-like and mature, and me childish and naive, but even on the playground it's common sense to treat others the way you want to be treated. Stop insulting me and I will gladly do the same for you. But if that is beyond you, then toughen up and get used to being called the names you call others.

@AKASmith
I think we agree on the main points re racism vs sexism, but I do wish that Steinem woulda or coulda set up her argument differently, without mentioning race at all.
Who can resist the urge to interpret, characterize, summarize, etc.? It's not always reading between the lines.
But I will try to be more careful in future. I always enjoy reading your posts.
Cheers.

Making a point
"I think Steinem plugging an imaginary female into Obama's resume was a legitimate way to make her point. Sexism exists. However, sexism and racism do not manifest themselves in the same ways."
Don't let the fact that it was incorrect get in the way. Do the names Mary Bono and Jean Carnahan ring any bells? You know, women with way less experience than Obama who became a Congresswoman and Senator respectively after taking over their husbands seats when they died. But hey, it was a good piece of rhetoric and I guess that along with making her point was all that matters.

race and gender
Sorry, you forgot the thousands of women, black and white, who are raped, beaten, and murdered by men they know and men they don't know. They may not get shot in the street, but they do get raped and murdered. Comparing black men and white women is not the issue. It is the treatment of black and white women by black and white men. Moreover, the proper comparison of violence in the street is the innocents male and female killed by feuding gangs not the gang members killing each other off. And, the truth is no white male wants to be born black or female, but people who make racist remarks in polite society get their heads handed to them. Men who make sexist remarks get knowing chuckles from their audience.

Better to ask, "Where was the truth?"
She didn't cry. There were no tears to "analyze."
She wasn't asked about her appearance and she didn't choke up, much less cry, about her appearance.
Here is what she choked up about: "You know, I've had so many opportunities from this country, I just don't want to see us fall backwards."
And Katrina? Please. How does JJJr know whether she cried about Katrina? Talk about race-baiting. Did Obama cry about Katrina? In public? While campaigning?
If you want to see what Hillary Clinton did about Katrina victims, a quick Google search will show you. Be sure to use "Hillary" or you'll find all the cites about her husband raising $130 million for Katrina victims.
And while he very carefully denies accusing her of faking the emotion, that's exactly what his previous words say.
The Obama campaign should fire this bozo.
