By allowing voters to both vent their anger and overcome it, while embodying the transcendence of America's racial wound, Barack Obama offers not just hope, but alchemy.

"Christopher Hitchens has correctly pointed out that there is something sentimental in this act of white racial self-absolution. He also makes another valid point: that Obama is of mixed-race descent, and that automatically calling him "black" reinforces the pernicious one-drop rule."

You know articles like this are about as condescending as I can take. If you believe in Obama fine but this whole walk on water attitude and he can take America places that basically make whites feel beeter about themselves is just moronic. Kamiya's "post-racial" attitude is always about making sure blacks temper criticisms of whites and America. It's always funny how everyone makes sure that someone is not "black" and call them bi-racial or mixed race when they like them, heared it all with Tiger Woods, I remember hearing it awhile back with Lenny Kravitz, and now Barack. How utterly ridiculous, please stop writing about race it does not suit you and salon does an awful job of getting writers to write about race.

  • I'm sure young Obama would have greatly benefited from a police record., or even better a prison term.

That is what Obama the candidate wishes on Obama the teen/young adult.

One freakin' third of black men in this country will end up in prison during their lifetime and Obama wants to continue that.

To be fair, so do Edwards, Clinton and all other Democratic candidates other than Kucinich.

Liberals love to blame Nader for the Y2K election loss.. It wasn't Nader, it was the fact that "liberals", like Obama, Edwards and Clinton support policies that bar a huge percentage of the black electorate from the voting booth.

"Hope" my bony, fish-belly white ass..

  • Evolutionary Politic-ology 101.us

Barack has won the primary! My writer friend and social observer/novelist explained his N.H. transformation:

Hillary was queen, then she was found to be... Not Bill

Obama's inspiration, especially to youth, is Get A New Life

Edwards is fighting a last round before retiring Almost Great

The Rest do not matter so much - as evolutionary strategy has selected, naturally, the winner.

A Republican cannot win when 60% of voters want Change.

He further explained that his emotions went thru a series of smaller changes until the Final Decision...

Hillary vs. Obama - A New Life seems more hopeful/feels better

Obama vs. Edwards - stopping The Rich means gridlock, sacrifice

Edwards vs. Hillary - incremental change means Rich still rule

The Rest vs. Ourselves: Good Ideas = Time + Work to develop

In a society and world of immediate dissatisfaction, waiting is now too painful to bear after seven years of Ugh!

The Yanks have won the war once again. Hurray U.S. citizens!!

  • winner takes all

I wonder how the candidates that don't win the Dem nomination could be convinced to step forward and actively campaign for the winner so there is a formidable front calling for change in our country with the party truly behind the movement...seems that we need everyone in the barrel this time around if we're going to win!

  • He can't f#cking WIN

What country does Kamiya live in? The one I live in believes passionately in the death penalty, the truth of the Bible's account of the universe's beginning, and that Jesus was the son of an invisible man in the sky. They overwhelmingly voted for Bush. They overwhelmingly thought Iraq was a good idea. They overwhelmingly are afraid of gay marraige.

And they're gonna vote for a black man for President in November? Puleeeeez.

Until this country deals with the invisible elephant int he room (race) - and voting for Barak Obama is NOT dealing with it - a black man will never be president. And for those liberal fantasists out there who think race has nothing to do with it - would a first term senator with no experience, one who two short years ago was voting (mostly "present" in the Illinois legislature) be taken seriously if he WASN'T black?

The problem is, there's not enough wide-eyed liberals to elect him to national office.

  • What does the article say?

I can read it cause I'm too busy barfing over the subhed.

  • Presto Chango..

...and after he is elected (?) his first public appearance will be on the Oprah show where the audience can view him walking across Lake Michigan.

    ...right?

....that old black magic has us in its spell...that old black magic that she weaves so well..

Ask yourself....where would Obama be without Oprah? Or better yet, where was he BEFORE Oprah?

  • Great article!

This is the best commentary I have read recently. Pure poetry. Thanks.

  • From a white hetero-

I won't break out the bubbly until a gay/lesbian, black (or asian or another race), a woman or possibly a combo is our Prez. At least a new race or gender! It is not a homogenous world, and to represent this country with only white old men is not representing entirely.

By the way, if you want to see who will win, watch which candidates are being invested on the exchange: Try Intrade prediction markets, which is interesting.

    Follow the money honey!

  • Paradise Lost: The Blindness of Bush-Bashing Barack Boosters

As Hillary scripts emotions with Betty Davis inadvertence and Jean Harlot demurred and resigned anxiety complete with plastic tears, The savior arises in spades to Lead us away from Bush-lite dems who voted for Bush's War and believe that September 11th warrants a more augmented Patriot act and national security apparatus (including aggressive interrogation of known captured terrorists). At lest Grandpa Mac-attack can take credit for the surge while fighting against the U.S. economy by scuttling the Bush tax-cuts and pushing amnesty to get Hispanic votes (can you say Pander?)

Meanwhile the so-called Bush-whipped-and-fatigued electorate is Not! waiting for this particular savior to reassure the dangerous world that America is no longer a racist white country. "let the word go forth that America is to be ruled by a new generation born and bred after Ronald Reagan and the cold war, ready to enact every euro-fashioned government mandate health care program we can decipher: all for the children, etc, etc. ad nauseum." Kennedy-lite black camelot worshippers are grave diggers for failed socialist policies of nationalizing the health care system.

Meanwhile, The Hope of America rides forward much to the chagrin of Bill and Hillary until the precipice of experience rears its ugly reality head: you want to trust national security and the management of the Armed Forces over to who? Get Real. After all white guilt is a phenomenon, but it isn't a viable public policy for national governance.
