The right is in serious trouble -- and not just because of Bush's disastrous presidency. But will it be able to change its reactionary ways?
  • Heart of a Dying Nation

Will conservatism evolve into something that respects personal freedom and preserves traditional community values? No. That die is already cast. Our current economy is a massive Ponzi scheme. The coming energy crisis will result in a spectacular economic collapse. Reactionary conservative politics will continue its manipulation through fear and paranoia. And it will be successful. Skyrocketing oil prices will be blamed on Arabs bent on destroying our freedom. Shortages of other resources, such as food, water, and medical care, will be blamed on swarthy illegal immigrants. The religious right will declare that evil has befallen us due to homosexual unions and abortion. There will be a resurgence of rightwing reactionary politics, after a brief respite of Democratic rule. So, no, I don't believe American Conservatism will transform itself. Gary is ever the optimist, a glass is half full type of fellow, the crazy heart of a dying nation.
