By selling weapons to "moderate" states, Bush would again be playing puppet master and jerking around the Middle East with disastrous consequences.

  • novak was born jewish but converted to catholicism

and as the proverb goes, "became more catholic than the pope". self hate? i wouldn't call it so, more like lady macbeth scrubbing the blot out. you can see the same thing, in lesser measure, by DZ in this same section, page 2. on page 3 you see, by MerelyMortalMale a typical coding, oh NO, i don't mean Jews, i mean Israelis! but the lie is shown by his three letters on the The religious state of Islamic science letters section, page 9. letters.salon.com/books/feature/2007/08/13/taner_edis/view/index9.html?show=all i used to post here a lot, but i found it disappointingly anti-jewish. it just won't stop, so i did. it's really pointless. if a hatred is going to last 3 millennia it will last a little longer. just a word of advice to all jews - have your mate convert. whether male or female. you don't have to be kosher, you don't even have to believe in god, but otherwise, you will bear anti-jews.

  • @Calcareous

I, too, refer to the whole band of crooks and liars in this administration as "Bush." I thought it was kind of a given that Bush is a puppet, just as Reagan was, for powerful interests -- and that's why I brought up the notion that arms-for-Arabs isn't so much about delicate adjustments to the balance of power in a far-off place full of little brown people as about enriching the likes of Halliburton, GE, Boeing, General Dynamics, etc. Did you agree in no way about the possibility that this is about enriching Bush and Company's friends?

  • Weapons for peace

I guess that when you ask past (and future) employees of weapons manufactures the best way to promote stability in the middle east, they answer; more weapons. No surprise there, its like asking Exxon to design your energy policy, answer; higher gas prices!! Honestly, I think that this means less than meets the eye, the high tech weapons systems we sell (or subsidize in the case of Israel and Egypt) are not going to change any of the slightly less violent Arab countries we send them to. In Saudi Arabia for instance, most of the stuff sits in crates, the royal family doesn't want a strong military outside of its control. This equipment is also pretty delicate and requires highly trained operations and repair people; not available anywhere in the region except Israel.

As for Kamiya's "Rodney King" like plea for a policy of 'why can't we all get along' at the end of his mediocre post, tell me just how do you get along with the Iranians who have called for the destruction of Israel, imprison opposition leaders and stone adulterers and homosexuals? Let me know when you figure it out. Better yet, Salon should get someone else to write about the middle east, because we know what Kamiya's answer would be; Israel should give up the entire west bank for empty promises from the Palestinians. When Katushas start raining on Tel Aviv I am sure that he would feel sorry. Leaving the west bank would also, I am sure, stop the 13 century old fight between the Sunnis and the Shiites.

  • Hezbollah claims to be fully rearmed

That is, they claim to be back up to several thousand short and intermediate range missiles in inventory including a brand new stock of Chinese Silkworm cruise missiles courtesy of Iran. Syria just rec'd a billion dollars to rebuild their forces, courtesy of Iran. The Hamas picked up several thousand American small arms the PA 'lost'. The PA just picked up 210 million dollars in military aid from the US directly. Egypt gets 2 billion dollars a year in direct military aid from the US. Saudi Arabia spends about half of its $17 billion dollar defense budget, one of the 10 largest in the world, with the US. Jordan gets 450 million dollars in direct military aid a year from the US. There are now small numbers of troops in the eastern part of the country. Yemen and Qatar get direct military aid from the US.

Of course it's the Jew's fault. They distract us with their Jew hypnotism.

  • the iranians know how to take them out of the crate, misaac

they did fine with the silkworm. with saddam (and soon, the U.S.) out of iraq, perhaps iran would flex its hegemony over the whole region. with that 10 year oil agreement, china would be on its side. russia? it has its own oil, it would be more than satisfied if saudi's oil is taken off the market. who knows how this will come out? THAT was the problem going in. israel? no i don't think it would be in trouble, iran has bigger fish to fry and it doesn't want a war where it would get hurt. perhaps israel will ally itself with the sunnis of saudi? anything you can imagine can happen, it's that unstable. i don't think kamiya would favor an impossible two state solution. who would be the second state? that mother of all fecund beggars, palestine? no, he probably favors a ONE state solution, like Tony Judt (you can always find a jew as a second for *any* opinion).

  • my enemy's enemy is my enemy

The entire neo con agenda has been to replace the Soviet Union with another 'global threat'. They chose that enemy and now their fake war in Iraq and their equally fake war in Afghanistan have turned into twin catastrophes. They talk constantly about the Second World War, pretending that they're engaged in a similar war. This is totally untrue. The Second World War had a defined enemy in a defined area. Most of the War on Terror is manufactured out of the most pernicious and cynical spin ever seen in the modern era in order to create a climate of fear so that they can de-democratize America and the West. Bush is continuing in this direction daily with almost no opposition from the media, academics and politicians. The Bush gang's claim that the 'terrorists' want to destroy our liberties is hilarious when you consider their own activities. Flooding the Middle East with weapons will create a huge war that will probably be uncontainable. I suspect that the baboons running US foreign policy think that the Arabs will all destroy each other and the US will then stand victoriously astride the ruins and have control of what they really want -oil. This is also completely untrue. The power of the Bush administration is the delusion that 'bi-patisanship' is a Good Thing. To that I say take a look at the parliament of Italy when the mafia ran everything and owned everything, including the government. Bi-patisanship was everywhere. These greedy, deceitful politicians may have had different philosophies on certain things but one thing they agreed on -they all liked money. Lots of it. The voters got shafted at every turn. This mafia version of government is the one you have. It enriches politicians and the rich people who own them and the voter gets cheated, lied to and disadvantaged in every way. This is why Bush is getting away with murder. The system is dysfunctional and usually (though not always) produces a dysfunctional administration such as now governs the United States. The Reds under the beds of the cold war era have now become the Muslims under the bed. The Pentagon and the vast arms industry America runs need a permanent state of war -with someone. This time they chose the wrong enemy, out of ignorance as usual. We will all pay the price the way we did after Vietnam. With luck America's economy won't totally collapse but at the moment all bets are off.
