Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
We may try to hate Tony, but our love for the careworn killer wins out. It's that moral perversity, in the age of Bush, that I'll miss most about "The Sopranos."

  • Anonymous!

Do not come to Salon without knowing about The Sopranos, and do not come to Salon with 4-Years-Out-Of-Date political arguments.

Let us write about The Sopranos here. And, you, read back in Salon or elsewhere, and bring yourself up to date on whether we had Saddam contained, and whether we needed to conquer.

Also, get a name. On Salon, "Anonymous" is reserved for people who worry about your president's Secret Police. You have no such worry.

  • I love Tony, but......

...he has a serious rival in Al Swearingen, the other lovable murderer with disgusting personal habits whose evil/irresistible quotient clouds our minds at least as much as Tony's does. Who can forget Al, in the very first episode, muttering to Dan: "Make it look like an accident.....?" And "Deadwood" came to an abrupt halt like a projector breaking down. No warning, no "closure" (pardon the expression), no nothing. I was ready for seven more years, at the very least. Al, we hardly knew ye......

  • Politics? Here?

I loved it when Junior was having that letter witten to Cheney, appealing to him, sympathizing with him, being in similar circumstances. That was funny. And then Tony when he was talking about scamming in the rebuilding effort in New Orleans saying Dick Cheney for king. Classic.

As for non Sopranos fans, what the hell are you doing reading this far down a thread of a Sopranos critique?

  • David Rockefeller / Sam "Sammy Boy" Alito: Bada Bing Bada Boom..!

I am not and have never been impressed with The Soprano's, coming from the Caldwell area and having some of my oldest friends being also amongst Dave Chases best friends literally I have been aware of him for way longer by decades than most of you..!

He used many references to our mutual friend Donny B. Waugh in the Rockford Files as a regular opponent of James Rockford that he wrote among others we both knew, and I liked Wiseguy which was in part based upon me and my adventures fighting the real wiseguys it was far superior..

Now I worked at the Mercedes dealership they featured as a salesmen and I was in Joe Soprano's class at West Essex High School and Dave was in Toby Soprano's class..and the Soprano's were not a Mob family what so ever..!

When he used Vinnie Terranova as the name for Ken Wahl's character that was the name of a West Caldwell mason carpenter..

When Mike Amodio of West Caldwell got murdered by two ass-holes seeking to get in with the Dad of this girl Mike was dating, who was Mobbed up Dave wrote that into a Rockford file a two parter Mike was a wild man and had screwed up with this dirtbag's daughter he was my painting partner but didn't deserve to get murdered as he did by these idiots who did 20-25 years and got out..

A real good story would have been about Sam Alito and how he covered up for the drunk West Caldwell cop that had 5 accidents in 7 months and who crippled me and then attacked for over ten years me and the girl I loved and was with for 11 years who everyone knew and grew up in West Caldwell...

Only to be sexually assaulted by A North Caldwell cop Sgt. for over 3 hours and how Alito and Chertoff let all this happened to good people then she and her little kids torn from their beds and only home they knew all for this drunk crashing cops benefit..and that they were the real gangsters of North Jersey and Alito a real criminal who sucked his way up to and lied before the Judiciary Committee and is the real scandal and disgrace of West Caldwell NJ which has played such a big part along with North Caldwell in Dave's writing..!

Now as far as the real biggest Murderer and Don of all Don's I vote for David Rockefeller, who will soon be responsible through the Tri-Lateral Commission and Bilderbergers millions and millions of deaths...!

Yup David Rockefeller he knows how to really murder and not get caught..!

    Bada Bing Bada Boom..!

  • Spoilers!

I've just starting watching The Sopranos on A & E on basic cable, which is what I can afford.

Great show, phenomenal characterization. But I need to stick my head in the sand and plug my ears all the time because my yuppie friends who can afford premium channels are way ahead of me on plots.

Anyway, just a wee observation from a lower class.

  • Re: Spoilers!

You can rent the series on DVD for a couple of bucks, starting at the very beginning, and immerse yourself, with no ads, which is how it is on HBO. You gotta do it!

  • I don't love Tony no more

I used to. But I don't anymore. He killed too many people. And he killed them worse. He did what he needed to do and did it well. But he has to forfeit remorse at his own passing: he was not the guardian of any gate but his own.

  • who did tony kill?

As to the article, did Tony kill any good guys? Hmmm, I don't think so. Heck, all of our heroes kill bad guys. And if they're not bad, they make them bad, then they kill them. They make them dance, and then when the dance isn't good enough, they kill them.

The good ones, like Tony, put up a good show.

The bad ones, like Bush, put up a bad show.

Tony never claimed god told him anything.

Between a guy like Bush and a guy like Tony, boy, who wouldn't pick Tony? Mind you, I don't want either, I want Edwards or Obama, or Hilary. But lately we haven't had much of a choice.

And I think I'd take Tony over Gore: Gore's good, but he can't win and if he did he can't govern.

    Tony won, Tony governed.

  • Whom Tony Personally Killed

Pussy, That Rat In The College Town, Jackie Aprile Jr., Ralph, Cwisstofuh, who else?

    Any good guys?

  • Correction?

Tony did not kill Jackie Aprile Jr. He and pussy killed some other kid in the NJ hinterlands.

  • To those who feel morally superior for choosing not to watch "The Sopranos"

Have you ever read "Crime and Punishment", or did you put it down after the first chapter because Raskolinkov didn't deserve your attention?
