Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
We may try to hate Tony, but our love for the careworn killer wins out. It's that moral perversity, in the age of Bush, that I'll miss most about "The Sopranos."
The letters thread is now closed.
  • WTF?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What the hell happened tonight?

  • so obvious

I guess we all missed the most obvious prediction:

35 mil opening weekend for The Sopranos movie.

  • Clearly, Tony gets shot in the back of the head . . .

The awkwardly-timed edit that delivered us to that silent black screen was Chase ending Tony's life. The last thing Tony sees is Meadow coming through the door. For a second, we the viewer become Tony Soprano. The awkward sudden ending that we experienced was Tony's end as well. Tony's screen went black and silent, too, the result of bullet to the back of the head.

    Penway

  • I take it back

    I've done a 180

    SPOILER ALERT

I am now (almost) convinced that what happened is that Tony got shot in the head. He was watching Meadow come into the restaurant and then, from his perspective, the screen suddenly went black.

I can think of no other reasonable explanation for the screen going blank like that.

    Can anyone else?

There won't be a movie. It's over. We know what is going to happen to all of the major characters (although Sil might not make it). AJ, Meadow, Carmela, their futures are mapped out. Paulie will be the guy taking Tony's place.

    Tony is gone.

  • also...

Am I the only one looking forward to AJ's porn movie about the Private Dick who gets sucked into his data port?

  • I Think They All Got Wacked by the "Arab" Mob

The title of the episode was "Made in America." The irony of the story is that while Tony Soprano was focused on Phil and the NY gang,he did not consider what could happen if the mob to which the "terrorists" belonged found out he was a snitch.

They off'd him, Carmella and AJ. Someone mentioned it previously that Bobby mentioned that you never hear the one that's meant for you.

This is in keeping with endings of seasons past; i.e. Johnny Saks was arrested before he could "take out" Tony.

  • I close my eyes and all the world drops dead...

Tony as Sylvia Plath... a bullet to the head accomplishes the same thing with more finality, and that's what happened to Tony. All the hassles and pleasure and static just stop, and the rest is indeed silence and void. The ending is growing on me, after a few replays...

  • Almost an hour and a half later

I am now convinced Tony was whacked, as well. There is no other explanation for the black out, the way the music ended abruptly.

Thing is, WE saw it coming. Was your heart about to jump out of your chest the whole restaurant scene, as mine was? I just knew we were about to see blood splatters. In that moment, the black out just seemed an anti-climax. Now, it seems inevetible but still profoundly sad.

  • Sorry for the lack of a SPOILER ALERT TO THE PREVIOUS POST OF MINE

but here is another. Oh God, It just hit me.

    Tony is gone.

    In every possible way.

  • I Think the FBI Agent Orchestrated the Whole Thing

The FBI used Tony to take out Phil. They also set Tony up for the "hit" and used Tony's death to create the case they needed to arrest and try they guys identified as "terrorists."

AJ was part Cassandra and all fool--to the end.

  • What Poster Predicted That A'J' Would Join Up?

That poster is a genius. Please step forward, and take a bow. Of all the stuff we said in this thread and in other threads, that idea is the only idea that actually surfaced in the finale.

And the idea that Tony got whacked is not subject to verification. It is one of those things. Nobody ever will know for sure. Do you suppose that now he has to live in that house with Cousin Tony B. and his mom forever?

  • When Tony arrives at the restaurant

he sees himself sitting at the table, alone. The scene cuts quickly to him choosing a song on the table-top juke-box.

    Carm looks nervous.

    AJ is oblivious.

Meadow is late because she can't parallel park.

    Journey is playing:

"Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world

She took the midnight train goin anywhere

Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit

He took the midnight train goin anywhere

A singer in a smokey room

A smell of wine and cheap perfume

For a smile they can share the night

It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard

Their shadows searching in the night

Streetlight people, living just to find emotion

    Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,

    Everybody wants a thrill

Payin anything to roll the dice,

    Just one more time

Some will win, some will lose

Some were born to sing the blues

    Oh, the movie never ends

It goes on and on and on and on

    (chorus)

    Dont stop believin

    Hold on to the feelin

    Streetlight people"

and under that "any way you want it"

    IOW, interpret however you like.

Was the cat a reincarnation of Ade or Christofuh?

  • I feel cheated

Life is not like this. Life has beginnings and endings. It's possible that Tony is dead, and that is why things went black. That doesn't resolve whether his family was killed or not. My husband commented that all of them were killed. That was his interpretation. I didn't think anybody was killed. Then I decided only Tony was. Then I realized that the writers couldn't decide how to end the show, so they decided to cop out and simply let us decide. They took the easy road and tried to pass it as art. But, like much of "modern" art, it isn't art, it's just a big practical joke on the public.

  • How...

Did the cat get from the Bada Bing to the butcher's shop?

Why didn't Tony or Paulie discuss Phils' getting wacked?

If "it goes on and on and on..." why cut to black instead of dissolve?

What did the abrupt reverse shot of Tony in the restaurant mean? Where it appeared that he was looking at himself?

    The onion rings? A circle?

  • minor point

"When Tony arrives at the restaurant he sees himself sitting at the table, alone."

More than one person has said this. It's not right.

When Tony gets to the restaurant, he spots an empty table with a good view of the door.

CUT TO Tony sitting at that table.

Ever heard of a jump cut?

  • a better question

    "How...

Did the cat get from the Bada Bing to the butcher's shop?"

A better question is how did Adriana's soul get inside that cat?
