The readers strike back

Massive online feedback has rocked writers and changed journalism forever. This brave new world is filled with beautiful minds and nasty Calibans and everything in between. Its benefits are undeniable. But do they outweigh its insidious effects?

The letters thread is now closed.

Consumerism

I agree with the article. I'll add that often negative feedback sounds like an angry consumer who wants his or her world a certain way. Anything different than that seems offensive to these people, as if reality is ordered from a catalog. As for the results of this, I'd say we're seeing it in our choice of politicians. Because we are so critical of every little thing, we have fake, scripted politicians. And then we write letters complaining, saying we want ones who are less "wooden" etc. We are becoming less tolerant of others views, both on the left and the right.

A kind Caliban

Reading this Stendahlese was a pleasure to me. You are very right in applauding the contact we have created for one another. I always appreciate hearing from those who choose to read my blog. And whether or not they agree with me, if there is no vulgarity, and grammer and spelling is reasonable, I publish all comments, unless the writer specifically asks that I retain it without publication.

I like your link for not publishing, but that kind of sophistication is beyond my capabilities.

Please continue with your thopught. Thank you.

Striking Back

I love this ability of the blogs to correct, sometimes not nicely, the errors and faux pas of the main stream press.

I was privy to some true information on an event that happened at our University Hospital where I live, and when the local paper gave credit for saving a mother's and baby's lives to the wrong person, had no trouble writing the correct chain of events and apparently forcing the newspaper to run a second story (without admitting their booboo) giving the correct info.

I'm sure it bothers many hide bound editors and management staff when one of us bloggers catches them in a big error.

My response to that is: check and recheck before you print.
