Salon Radio: Kenneth Katzman on attacking Iran

An interview with one of the Beltway's leading Iran experts and advocates of an attack reveals the grotesque indifference and banality of evil of our foreign policy establishment.

The letters thread is now closed.

Chilling

That really must be listened to in order to get the full effect of Katzman's chillingly casual, if not cavalier, tone while brushing off such "minor" issues as the U.N. charter against military threats and attacks on member nations. Thanks Glenn for once again making sure i sleep a little less soundly tonight.

Torture Memo -- Bomb Iran Memo

He speaks of the study much in the same way that those who boast of the intended outcome of torture speak of torture. He kind of guffaws that the intention isn't to bomb Iran, the intention is to put a knife to Iran's throat, stand Iran up on a box with electrodes attached to Iran's knads, strip Iran naked and put vicious dogs barking into Iran's face in order to scare, or, more accurately, humiliate Iran into compliance with whatever the all powerful United States government wants Iran to comply with.

His study is also in line with the idea of torture in that they don't have evidence that Iran is doing what they say Iran is doing, just as many of the torture victims aren't guilty of what they are being accused of or thought to have knowledge of.

Completely detached

He came off as completely detached and cavalier about it. One of the shocking points was near the very end, when GG quoted the report as saying these strikes would occur over a long period of time intermittently to "keep them in line" (or whatever the wording was). More unending war.

Every one of the 5 bullet points referred to described what U.S. policy would wreak on the region, not Iran's policies.

Civilian casualties mean nothing to these monsters.

Mr. Greenwald, you need your own T.V. program.

Terminology

Katzman continually refers to his screed as a "study". There is nothing studious about stringing together rationales for violating the UN charger and other international norms for behavior. This "study" is just the latest pornographic effort by the warpervs.

Friday, October 24, 2008 11:12 AM

Wow.

Is there any chance Katzman's poorly placed chuckles were due to his anxiety or nervousness, instead of humor? Please say he was having trouble hearing himself articulate his "thinking" out loud.

[Paraphrasing] Well, we did it that way before. is a horrible defense of wreaking havoc on a civilian population. Any civilian population. For any transgression. Real or imagined.

It sure seems like if you go into this kind of scenario expecting failure, and assuming you need a final, ultimate solution for the expected failure, you will, surely, fail.

And, so much for the Geneva Conventions when they're inconvenient, eh?

A pox on them all.

i don't have sound

so I will await a the transcript, but I can't help but note that there are all sorts of 'areas of expertise' where the process of thinking abstractly about something renders the actual emotional content or if you prefer "human cost" to disappear from consideration.

In such cases the "expert's" lack of conscience is more than made up for by their own utterly inflated sense of self-importance. I suspect that if I had audio, I'd experience a startling confirmation of that notion.

Charles Krauthammer, 2001

http://edition.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/2001/03/05/doctrine.html

In the liberal internationalist view of the world, the U.S. is merely one among many--a stronger country, yes, but one that has to adapt itself to the will and the needs of "the international community." That is why the Clinton Administration was almost manic in pursuit of multilateral treaties--on chemical weapons, biological weapons, nuclear testing, proliferation. No matter that they could not be enforced. Our very signing would show us to be a good international citizen.

This is folly. America is no mere international citizen. It is the dominant power in the world, more dominant than any since Rome. Accordingly, America is in a position to reshape norms, alter expectations and create new realities. How? By unapologetic and implacable demonstrations of will.

- - Charles Krauthammer, 2001

* * *

And that worked so darn good!

We created new realities!

The Russians are scared of us and playing nicely!

The Iranians are scared of us and dancing to our tune!

. . . oh, wait . . .

Friday, October 24, 2008 11:19 AM

No Sound....

....but then, maybe, that's a good thing. I don't need to be chilled in addition to the AC. I'll have to wait for the transcript.

Kenneth is an empty man

This guy must have a hole where his soul is supposed to be. I'm not too sure what he's using in his head for brains either; I couldn't believe some of the answers he gave you. Long-term bombing, because of Iran's aggression, of course. We have to stop them from waging war by...waging war. The illogic makes my head hurt.

Of course, these people need Iran as villains, because they've got oil, and Americans are used to thinking of them in that role. If "W" was a different man, they'd probably be US allies right now...they made some overtures after 911. For sure, relations could easily be better, but that wouldn't sell more missiles, would it?

Really good interview Glenn. I feel worse hearing it, knowing that someone like this can get people who matter to listen to his ravings, but it's better to know.

Friday, October 24, 2008 11:21 AM

Given the Republican style of naming

Should we call him Kenneth the Carpet-bomber?

Friday, October 24, 2008 11:21 AM

Sc ary

Very scary stuff. Good job GG on getting him to articulate about the Iranian civilian issue especially. If this type of interview was being aired in the MSM regularly, I think that would go a long way to changing the conversation in this country.

Paul Dirks/umbrage

When you say "no sound," do you mean you don't have the capability to listen, or that you're trying to listen but there's no sound coming out?

Friday, October 24, 2008 11:25 AM

Jeezuz, Glenn, that was freakin' horrifying.

Somebody yesterday posted a linky to a [Harvard?] prof. who wrote a book about Sociopaths. She claims some 4% of the population (1 in 25) literally does not have a conscience. I'll be damned if that sonuvabitch doesn't qualify...

Any chance you're willing to share the initial email he sent?

I just wanted to go plow some earthen dirt, gently, ir hobble down for a swim in the creek (it's too chilly tho)..

I've felt it myself, the litter of weapon mass destruction. The hands have the power to unleash a horrible energy. It is what some "humans" fallen from grace do as a occupation. Maybe over a plate of tough lump of liver and onions at the Hill, pray-prey? Prey is not a sentiment of prayer.

Preying on another for money will evoke a wrath from Nature.

So, 'we act tough' and toss rock, metal, and dust into the sky.

Real humanity cry forth from graves to indite, so you do hear?

It's an illusion of illimitable power, and in some ways: A death.

A walking dead in a human blob of protoplasm. Thee trouble.

What is? Who is? Who is responsible for the sad global heave's?

What is? `technical arrogance' that will overcome predicament?

What is? `one aspect, oh, to view a world blindly. A Lost mind.
