Economic illiteracy

That post you linked to is absolute tosh.

Obama's claim:

"we could save all the oil they're talking about getting off drilling"

That was his claim - nothing to do with price savings or reductions.

And, one might parenthetically add, the poster also seems misunderstand the nature of the oil markets, assuming that domestic exploration would have no effect on price up until the point where the extracted oil actually hit the market.

By the way

I assume the people who tote 'get out of Iraq' polls as proof we should get of Iraq, will be similiarly bound to American's desire for offshore drilling?

Of course, the reality is a majority in congress feels the same way as the majority of Americans, which is why Nancy Pelosi won't let it go to a vote.

@Andrew Tod

Obama is in favor of inflation? That is, to say the least, unconventional economic policy. Then again, they bought "trickle down".

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 07:57 AM

@Andrew

Obama gives every indication that the thing that interests him the most in the world is himself

Andy, (I can call you Andy, mayn't I, us being buddies?) I'm really just about the same way. I guess me'n Obama are about the selfishest peoples in the world.

Your penchant for self-sacrifice, however, sets you apart from, and above, other more common men. It's a nice thing to see this early in the morning.

@Andy

I'm not making any prescriptions...

Andilla, my Andilla (It's what they call an afectionate diminutive), for God's sake, stay away from the Tylenol-3s! You'll be chopped liver if you keep on taking those things.

They're worse than anthrax.

@bamage

Howzabout all y'all just have a nice big cup of STFU!?

I mean, Fuck off. Seriously.

Bamage, you seriously undermine your own credibility and effectiveness with crap like this. I usually enjoy reading your posts, but this sounds like some sort of Tourette's Syndrome outburst. Time to type like an adult.

Most commenters mentioning Digby's "you knows" was in an effort to help her, not criticize her. I think most people here already like and greatly respect her thoughts and posts. Helping her become a more polished audio voice will only serve all of our collective purposes better. And I think Digby realizes this, and can take some constructive criticism from those who enjoy her most.

Now, go fuck off yourself. ;-))

I know the feeling

Let's face it: every time one looks closer at Obama ... one is bound to be disappointed.

I feel the same way about your comments here.

@Andrew Tod

Please don't deprecate me further. I'm already reeling from the blow you inflicted in your post. Your ability to strike at a persons deepest and most vulnerable parts with a rapidity and acerbity which is unanswerable is a weapon you must sheath for the sake of humanity.

Thank God there aren't any Tylenol-3s in the house!

I can't help but admire, though, the way you dragged my wife into it. Did your Dad teach you that trick? Gosh, your friends are lucky guys.

@bystander

Thanks very much. While I obviously don't know him as well as most of you do, he seems like a total sweetheart. I hate to think of him being stuck in a hospital room, particularly since it means he's missing all the fun here!

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 08:46 AM

Clark

And, crucially, he's gorgeous.

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 08:50 AM

@bystander

Thanks so much for printing that address again! Makes it easy.

He was always so nice to me here, and I should send a get- well.

His foot? Operating on his foot, right?

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 08:58 AM

@bystander

Oh, that's right "leg issues". Now I remember, he wrote about it some. I think it had been a chronic problem which reached a bad stage? Oh gosh, I hope they can resolve it in a positive way.

How I wish I had the resources to get him a laptop and a connection. His "hospital blogging" would be something, and it would be something else, all that and more.

Moose, my Moose!

Yeah. I got the impression that it was a wound to his lower leg, initially sustained in Viet Nam. Shrapnel? Pedinska may be along to clarify at some point.

LunaSea, your welcome.

May I ask how you know this to be factual?

Tuesday, August 5, 2008 09:10 AM

@bystander

It'll be a pleasure to send him a card. I do wish he had a laptop, and post from the hospital, or (jeez I hadn't even thought of this til now) he's not in much of a shape to do it.

I can get a card at the Safeway, or make something (What, you don't think I've got a scrapbook filled with pictures and drawings of Moosie?), but then I'll have to ask my wife where the stamps are. I can hear it now: "You do remember what happened the last time you mailed something? You're not up to that again, are you?"

I think she'll approve, tho, and disburse the necessary postage.

A Todd

It is a pleasure to watch a real bullshit artist at work.

Of course, the reality is a majority in congress feels the same way as the majority of Americans, which is why Nancy Pelosi won't let it go to a vote.

Gee, and after the House Republicans went to all that trouble to defeat the bill outlawing oil speculation and profiteering (http://thinkprogress.org/wonkroom/2008/07/31/speculator-bill-killed/). The oil companies must be really hurting.

You do realize that "Big Oil" just posted its biggest quarterly profits ever (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080801/ap_on_bi_ge/earns_oil). The top six western oil companies had Q2 profits of $51.5 billion. Exxon Mobil set a new all-time record for any US corporation with a quarterly profit of $11.68 billion.

You do realize that there are over a hundred countries in the world with a GDP of less than $51.5 billion. And that there are more than sixty countries with a GDP of less than $11.68 billion. And that those numbers aren't revenue for the oil companies, but profit on revenue.

The oil companies are really caught in a squeeze and the Republicans are really trying to help them out. In fact, the House Republicans are so vexed at the Democrats refusal to stand up for big oil and allow them to do more drilling that they are spending their summer vacation putting on theatricals in favor of big oil (http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Urging_drilling_House_GOP_members_refuse_0801.html). One gets the impression that the oil companies are paying them, not by the bill, but by the hour.

I assume the people who tote 'get out of Iraq' polls as proof we should get of Iraq, will be similiarly bound to American's desire for offshore drilling?

Of course they are. That's why a) Obama has suddenly decided offshore drilling is a good idea (and if Obama decides it's a good idea so will bernbart), and b) McCain received more than $1 million in contributions from oil companies in June after he flipped in favor of drilling (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/26/AR2008072601891.html).

So, yeah, everybody wants more drilling, but especially the oil companies and the congressional Republicans.

But do keep on "catapulting the propaganda." As I say, it is a pleasure to watch.
