As I did, one really felt that he was a man worthy of trust.
Later, understanding the difference, that he was not beholden to the interests that keep crappy TV on the air because he alone occupied the airwaves, he was bigger than 'feminine hygeine' or 'Coors'. Everyone wanted to be with Mr. Cronkite.
Today, the sycophants rule. Tim Russert was likely a good man.
I do suspect however, after watching the public grieving by news people, that there is a correlation between being a bagman, and how much people miss you.
Walter Cronkite is getting nowhere near the coverage that Tim did.
is not wise Latino and cannot speak American too good. He does not have splendid T-shirt made for him with delightful logo saying "I am Zalaya" to wear around San Luis Obispo. Why doesn't he Twitter and get lovely picture in Salon waving poster but having very-pleasant manicure first so nails look good when waving poster. Maybe he can only speak "pidgin" English and calligraphy is not fine enough for posters while grammaire is too dumb for Twitter. He is sad sack indeed.
...I just saw you on Al Jazeera talking about double standards in reporting in the USA when it involves stories about incarcerated journalists involved in reporting on The War of Terror. Wow, you really are getting out there. But you look so young! How could you have done all the things your CV here says?
You know when the war in Iraq and Afghnaistan started what struck me was the way CNN et al presented it as a kind of TV serial. With numnuts saying things like "This is going to be fifty year war" etc etc.
At the time i asked myself, "How do they know all this, these genrals and pundits?" It was like the whole thing had been planned so afr in advance that ALL contingencies were covered including media coverage. What are your thoughts on this?
Want to know whether Cronkite-style journalists exist today? Then watch when they're told that the Taliban are exploiting the captured American soldier for propaganda purposes, and either believe it without question or laugh out loud at how preposterous that sounds. Methinks they'll go with the propaganda angle.
Dear Glenn,
I think I love you.

Better discussion, both pro and con, about the kid on Mt. Washington.
I like the discussion at a law blog I follow better. Let us see, the fellow is 17 years old and legally a child. He was hit with the largest fine in the history of that foul state New Hampshire for twisting his ankle and then allegedly making a bad decision on the hike after he was injured.
I don't know if you are aware of it, but kids make bad decisions all the time. But 25 thousand dollars?
Defend your precious love of the government all you want, but the largest fine in history for twisting an ankle?
Whatever.
http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=522184 for views by a hikers group. I love the one, "Sounds to me like he is footing the bill for a new fleet helicopter."
But the one that said if you start charging people (remember this was a child) for doing stupid stuff in the woods, you should charge people for doing stupid stuff in the city too. This is the Glenn Greenwald golden rule popping up again. (I am on topic)
OT: the thing that i like about the Bush-era cover-ups is that they are so erroneous or dishonest (or both) that their defenses (very) often point even more strongly towards wrong-doing. the line that Mr. DarkSide didn't do anything wrong is beyond laughable.
this whole we-shut-the-program-down-before-it-became-operational argument on top of the CIA's history of lying to the Congress undermines the credibility of this point of defense.
so the CIA needed to lie to Congress about its existence for eight (8) years and during those 8 years the highly illegal program was never operational? how could a highly illegal program remain in existence for nearly a decade?
their line of argument opens up a battery of questions such as : 1) Who was in charge of it? 2) Under what authority was this operation implemented? 3) How much money was allocated for it? and 3) Under whose authority was this money allocated?
and maybe, maybe, Cheney will show his true colors (yellow and bile green) and draw former Resident Bush into the fracas.
wouldn't that be special?
...Bowe is that we have the Pentagon saying that these people who have captured him, who may or may not be the Taliban, have broken international rules of war. These are the same guy who brought to Abu hraib and Guantanamo. The CNN Washington/Pentagon correspondent, (sorry can't remember his name, but rest assured he is embdedded up some militarty arse) labeleld him a hostage. When does a prisoner of an war become a hostage? By this logic all those non-persons who languished and still lnaguish at US black jails are hostages too, right?
Yep this and the way all other stories about these wars and those prosecuting them and those governeing those prosecuting have been reported as well as the underlying issue such as Chuck Todd and his ilks' reporting on government starkly reminds us that
1. During war the first casualty is the truth, which is more imporatnt to know than simple facts.
2. One law for them and another for us, unless your like us but agin' us then you have no rights and will be eaten up by the colappsing beast of capitalism.
3. The Pentagon line is the only one worth reporitng but make sure you get their terminology right first otherwise confusion as to wheteher those of "our" side they capture are POWs or hostages or perhaps both.
Confused, hell yar that is their whole idea!
While we are at it, and it is worth considering, what is the difference beween how the Chinese official state TV and other media are reproting the Uigur situation and the outcome of the violence and what we see on the supposed independent media in the US and its allies?
What we seem to be witnessing is the homgenisation of the propagnada techniques of all hegemonic regimes. This is truly scary. No doubt this is what globlaisation is really all about. Corporate dominance of government, sovereignty and citizens. The whole One World Government conspiracy seems more and more plausible as we witness this homogenisation of information, the means of production and the control of world financial markets, though it is not a government conspiracy but a corporate one wherein the governments just become the front for their depredations.
By the way yanks Al Jazeera is now broadcasting on cable in your wonderful, free and brave country, have a look and get a totally different view as to the one the major networks there present and realise just how accurtae Mr Greenwald is. In fact I reckon he will learn a lot too from the brave women (mostly) who report for Al Jazeera English in the hotspots of the Mideast and Central Asia, Africa etc. You might even enjoy a change from the irritating twangy accents prominent on US channels.
