Celebrating Cronkite while ignoring what he did

Cronkite's best moment was when he did exactly that which today's journalists insist they must never do.

The letters thread is now closed.

Interesting, Clinton in Mumbai

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2009\07\19\story_19-7-2009_pg20_3

Interesting both for the tone of the article and for the fact that a Daily Times article would filter to the top for an Indian news story on Google News for a while.

It's hard to define ancient these days when forty years may appear as an epoch. But then, speaking of really ancient, Harper's is the second most ancient magazine in America, launched as Harper's Monthly around 1851. Only Smithsonian is older, and not by much.

That Was One Long Run-On Sentence

from the appropriately named Numberoneclerk

It started off well, but you know, kind of disintegrated after that

You idiots ... (blah, blah, pbbt, blah)

Your sister, berbart, has been asking as to your whereabouts. I told her you were Numberoneclerking at my local Blockbuster. Or is that not true?

Saturday, July 18, 2009 06:20 PM

Dirigo...

I was calculating from about 20 years old or so, about the youngest I'd expect anyone to be reading Harper's, and in fact, a bit on the young side. Add another 40 years, and you're definitely a senior citizen. A bit creepy to call yourself a lad, no?

One of the best things about a Harper's subscription is access to that entire archive. What a mine!

Timothy

before you get too exercised, check out the archives.

You will find exactly two letters.

Not worth tilting at...

Makes Perfect Sense,

Numberonemoron

Your (GG's) words ring hollow and bring to mind that of an individual who uses 20-20 hindsight as the basis for his opinions. did you ever come to a conclusion without waiting to see what happens first?

I know I have. You are an idiot and I didn't have to wait "to see what happens first."

So, what's going on? Is RedState's site down or something? Is Limbaugh intoxicated--AGAIN!-? is O'Reilly rubbing down the newest intern? Is Hannity blowing the newest intern? I mean, really, it must be a dull Saturday for you, clerk (and I hope you don't mind my calling you that, clerk).

Gotta be...

I in fact think Chuck Todd would be better for Meet the Press.

Don't you all ever wonder if Berbart is just yankin' our chain?

Save your ammunition. Take a close look at this guy and then, walk away.

Heh, Okay Anonymust,

just did that.

But, you know, there's a part of me (that petty part that comprises probably 90% of my being) that enjoys engaging weirdos like this--and isn't it peculiar that such an individual would chose a screen-name like Numberoneclerk, or whatever it was? I mean, Christ, why not Heisenberg'sUncertain or Einstein'sQuantum-Qumquat?

Either of those is better than something that suggests, "Hey, buddy, you wanna popcorn wid dat?"

Cronkite

What stupidity! A reporter’s job is to report the TRUTH, not just what agrees with his POV. Cronkite questioned the military because what he saw on the ground didn’t match what they were telling him. It wasn’t a matter of discarding facts he didn’t agree with philosophically.

This is a lesson both the ‘conservative’ media like Fox and the liberal media should keep in mind. Reporting today is a joke. It’s all about the agendas of the right and left and nothing about reporting facts one doesn’t agree with.

Publican

The work of Robert Moses during the Freedom Rides of the sixties presents as compelling a story as that of MLK--and actually more so in my mind. King was no slouch, but he certainly gets way too much credit for the civil rights victories of the fifties and sixties. King knew this as well, friends noted that he was in a constant state of guilty turmoil because he felt as if he got too much credit for actions that others had risked and spent their lives attempting to accomplish. In any case, he's certainly over quoted. Generally, when someone uses an MLK quote to bolster their argument, I think they're up to no good.

If you get a chance watch "Freedom on my Mind" for a snapshot of so many other incredible people who made a difference during those times.

New Deal Democrat & Glenn

Re: Katie Couric...

I have to give her a bit more credit than you two do.

Remember that morning show piece where she appeared with Gibson and Williams, neither of whom would accept any responsiblity on the part of the media for not asking enough of the hard and challenging questions before the invasion of Iraq?

Well, Katie did accept some of that responsibility and they both totally dismissed her for it. As I keep sayilng... it's the OVARIES!

Actually, Glenn posted the video of Couric, Williams and Gibson in one of his posts and gave accolades to Couric for her part in the discussion.

The video is at sig. Sorry about the 15 second commercial.

So, a reporter, like say, a scientist, or maybe even (gasp!) a lawyer, should have some ability to deal with the world - and the people in it, official or otherwise - with some sense of an empirical method? Come what may?

Saturday, July 18, 2009 06:45 PM

I remembered that Kitt...

but both Glenn and New Deal Dem mentioned her at the very begining of the thread, not for that appearance, though.

They mentioned the Palin interview. I thought the piece with Gibson and Williams showed more grit.

Thanks for that link. It's much better. I just went to YouTube beause it is so easy to search there.

Saturday, July 18, 2009 06:51 PM

Anonymust

You're welcome for the link. As it turned out, when I played it back it didn't have the 15 second add after all. So I guess you got the same result.

Saturday, July 18, 2009 06:52 PM

So, bernbart,

They have no standards on cable. MSNBC does the best job. PBS does has standards.

What are PBS's standards and how are cable standards non-existent? I ask this seriously because I'd like to know, seriously, what they are?

Frankly, I think you're making this up.

Saturday, July 18, 2009 06:59 PM

@ numberoneclerk . . .

you're kidding right?

". . . a bunch of losers who couldn't succeed in the real world . . . ."

Glenn Greenwald: J.D. from NYU then a litigator at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for 2 years. He then tarted his own firm. He followed that up by writing and publishing 3 well-received books (2 NYT best sellers). Now he's currently ranked in the top 10 of most influential columnist in America.

Do I need to go on or does the above count as "real world success"?
