The Holder trial balloon: Abu Ghraib redux

Arguably, prosecuting low-level torturers while shielding powerful policy makers would be worse than doing nothing.

The letters thread is now closed.

Sorry about the double cut and paste.

Please if you are interested in reading the very fallible infallability post ignore the first cut and paste and read the second. That should teach me to make sure I delete the pre-spell checking text.

See, the spelling Gestapo Police has me rattled!

Agreed bro. Snoids just wanna have fun. And it's incredibly entertaining (stoned and straight) to see these guys who are so intelligent, are addressing matters which are so important, and are making points which I agree with again and again, continually call each other morons and idiots. And this after Glenn's daily magnificent Sisyphean struggle just to keep things from falling apart less quickly (the definition of optimist has come to this). rrheard is one of my favorites, too. But I'm afraid I can't let pass the number one unforgivable sin of all time: misspelling Nietzsche.

It'll lead to the top

Any investigation will go right to the top: Cheney/Bush. Its not going to happen. Even if Holder "goes rouge" and tries something radical like you know if decides to follow the law, Obama will pardon everyone before a trial starts.

GG Does Not Claim to Solve the intractable US Problems.

For any true opposition to crystallize some theoretical underpinnings are necessary upon which a significant number of action oriented people can coalesce.

This may be a very bad example in terms of putting the work of people like GG in perspective but: Using some of the logic that some members of this blog use, Karl Max was totally useless because the only thing he did was to write some obscure book about the inherent contradictions of Capitalism. What a hopeless twit! He though that things may happen by resorting to sloganisms: “Workers of the World unite, you have nothing to lose but your credit cards”, and “do not make any effort to obtain ropes to hang them, they will sell them to us when they are needed”, and other statements very appropriate to our twitting technology. Well, some of the obscure writings provided the foundations for one of the most destructive revolution in history.

We need some understanding and common acceptance of a model of the power structure that has evolved during the last 40 years, that in general terms accommodates what appears to have happened and can make predictions about what is most likely to happen over the next 10 years.

You have to be in complete denial of reality to think that the political/social systems in the US are not broken. You also have to be even more blinded to the reality of the braking of glass ceilings by the African American community and other minorities:

Supreme Court what a role model our Justice Thomas.

Highest levels of military seniority and Secretary of State, a yes men with a very questionable past. Aid to Poindexter, Investigator of Mi Lai with no findings of wrongdoing. A completely dishonest presentation at the UN with worldwide view.

A double break of glass ceilings: Condoleezza Rice. A deep analyzer of Historical documents for the President. A total lack of imagination (euphemism for honesty) about planes used as destructive objects, even though the very day of 9/11, a live simulation exercise doing exactly that was in progress. Forgot, also something about culinary dislike for mushrooms and clouds.

Do I have to say anything about Speedy Gonzalez?

Now a wonderful Nubian President that has had the highest marks in Sincerity School. That is where the best political leaders are made. The training is conceptually very simple but very difficult to master to perfection. When you learn how to truly fake sincerity you are ready to assume you assigned position. I was told Obama graduated with Suma Cum Laude honours, the third and highest level in the Cum Laude club. I have no doubt when I see him in action.

The spineless democrat’s mantra is total nonsense.

The war on terror should be renamed to “the introduction of terror coming soon to a theater near you” in the US.

The disjointed models we are using to understand what is going on are simply not correct.

Can we work together to see if we can develop one that reflects a good percentage of what has happened and has some predictive power? The exercise may channel some of our frustrations, if nothing else.

@northwestwoods Re: WSJ Article

Thanks for the link, NWW.

That article makes no sense. I don't believe the sanitized details at all. It contradicts what happened with KSM and others who were alleged to be al qaeda big shots, and it makes no sense that it wasn't funded, and that it was in "fits and starts" and that it was extralegal and that it was only recently halted. None of that makes any sense.

That's not what it was at all, I don't think. I also would like to see some columnists apologize to Sy Hersh if this thing turns out to resemble what he claimed was an assassination ring headed by Darth. If it was, I don't believe for a second that they only were given $1 million OR that it had anything to do with al qaeda.

Why would we assassinate, in secret, al qaeda leaders while we're rounding up hundreds of so-called enemy combatants to imprison without trials?

The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

JD

After reading your self-absorbed homage to indifference--the same stupid points made by a hundred white posters since the day Obama's name was first mentioned as a serious presidential candidate, I'm seriously considering logging off this whites- only posting space forever.

Unfortunately for you, you're going to need us stupid people of color to help elect whoever it is you're rooting for. Good luck with that..."Nubian"...what a douchebag.

@Ondelette re: new NYTimes article

A series of investigations could exacerbate partisan divisions in Congress, just as the Obama administration is trying to push through the president’s ambitious domestic plans and needs all the support it can muster.

- - Scott Shane, NYTimes, page A1

__________

Apparently, the Obama administration is counting on the support of, and scared of alienating, a crucial faction of the GOP.

That is, the pro-torture-and-pro-healthcare faction of the GOP, whose members meet for a monthly luncheon where they discuss how to further their twin goals of defending Dick Cheney and supporting Barack Obama.
