How else could the elites sell the story of 9/11 which is ridiculous and impossible on its face? How else could they create the spectre of a global Muslim threat, which places like Guantanamo are supposed to be protecting the world from? The only thing the NYT actually assumes is the gullibility of the public
The interesting thing is if you want to research 9/11 you HAVE to do it on line. You never get questions asked about it in the press. So you get the interesting situation that while lots of people say they don't believe what they read in the papers they also will not believe anything UNLESS it is printed in the papers.
As a consequence those that don't think for themselves think there is nothing to think about re 9/11 because they read nothing about it in their news papers.
Simple, but very effective what?
So in the interests of good journalism.....where is your correction on your Uigher article?
Here's how demands for retractions work:
(1) You identify a factually false statement someone wrote or spoke;
(2) You identify and highlight the evidence demonstrating it to be false.
You've done neither. Feel free to try. Screaming "you were wrong!!!" doesn't even rise above the level of hysteria.
My point is that you make it a practice to be thorough in your reporting.. Why didn't you just attribute it to Senator Shelby.
BEcause Shelby is just one of hundreds of examples. The NEXIS search for "worst of the worst" and "Guantanamo" just for the last couple years alone yielded hundreds and hundreds of results. Not all of them were recent examples (some referenced Rumsfeld's statement from early on; others disputed it), but many, many were -- and it included all kinds of government officials, from both parties, in various branches and agencies. I just used the Shelby one because it's the first one that came up and it was illustrative - not because there's anything special about him.
You seem reluctant to accept that Democrats have said these things, too, but they just have.
Thank you for claryfying that and for being reasonable. I take issue with those how think the NYT is not a good paper. The NYT is the BEST newspaper in the country. Most local newspaper are copying edited segments of their stories. The SF Bay area used to have several good newspapers, but that has changed, and this why we read the NYT. The SF Chronicle is a is waste of newsprint these days.
I like to distinguish between reporting and Opinion. I think Glenn's' column is Opinion, and I think it is sad that many readers do not, or cannot distinguish reporting the news from opinion.
There are quite a few printed books that study the evidence, including the several that David Ray Griffin has written on the subject.
I do agree that the government's need to sell its 9/11 story to the public was probably the primary reason all the torture started.

* * * * *White House Press Corps Happy to Attend Barack Obama's Off-the-Record BBQ
By John Cook, Thu Jul 9 2009Reporters from roughly 30 television networks, newspapers, magazines, and web sites celebrated the Fourth of July with Barack Obama at the White House last weekend. Why didn't you know that? Because they were sworn to secrecy.
We reported yesterday that Politico's Mike Allen was spotted milling about as a guest at the White House's "backyard bash" by the pool reporter, who was allowed into the event for 40 minutes and kept in a pen before being ushered out. When Allen quoted from the pool report in his Playbook column the next day, he deleted a reference to his own name and didn't bother to tell his readers that he was actually at the party.
Well, he wasn't alone. Gawker has learned that the White House gave tickets to virtually every major news organization that covers the president—the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, ABC News, NBC News, CNN, CBS News, and so on, about 30 in all. The reporters were invited to attend on the following condition:
"You are being invited to attend this event as a guest. Blogging, Twittering or otherwise reporting on this event is not permitted. If you feel that you cannot agree to abide by these ground rules, please don't claim a ticket."
That's right: Much of the White House press corps spent the Fourth schmoozing with White House staffers, catching performances by the Foo Fighters and Jimmy Fallon, and watching the fireworks from the most exclusive vantage point in the D.C. metro area, all off the record—not to mention off-the-Facebook and off-the-Twitter. These are the same people who just a week ago were whining in the press briefing about Obama's malicious and dastardly attempts to "control the press."

Stunning al-Harmain Filing Shames Obama; Shows Duplicity Of Officials
By: bmaz Thursday July 9, 2009 12:35 pmIn early June, a critical hearing was held in front of Judge Vaughn Walker in the al-Haramain warrantless wiretapping case. As a result of that hearing, Judge Walker entered an order commanding the attorney for plaintiffs al-Haramain et. al to file a motion for summary judgement. Hot off the press, the motion was filed minutes ago, and it is a stunning demonstration of just how disingenuous and two faced President Obama and his administration have been on the seminal issues of warrantless wiretapping, protection of Constitutional rights, transparency and accountability....

Was this the White House's way of mollifying Dana Milbank?
