What if the Uighurs were Christian rather than Muslim?

Violent clashes in China underscore an ugly reality of the War on Terror.

Mercedez

However, if you drew up a list of known "terrorist" groups without any PRIOR knowledge of claimed religious affiliation to their cause and THEN went back and filled in those blanks, I'm pretty sure you'd find a smattering of this and that, religions here and there, then Muslims, Muslims Muslims, Muslims Muslims.

Again, this doesn't mean Muslims as a whole are terrorists. It does mean that a majority of loud terrorists out there claim Muslim influences.

You're typing this from a country that acknowledges that many of its military actions are done with terrorist goals. In fact, just six months ago, we financed a group of 175,000 terrorists--many of whom were Jews, some who were athiests and even Christians--who had the stated goal of influencing Gazan policies by military means. You have a very narrow idea of what constitutes terrorism based on your indifference to certain victims of it, and your clear concern about others.

Hey Ondolette

In your description of the capture of the Uighurs, you forgot to claim that they are in Gitmo because they are muslim.

I thought you were on Glenn's side, maybe I got that wrong . . . better be more careful next time, failure to maintain the underlying myths of the paranoid conspiracy may lead to disbarment.

@Clockwork Smurf

Tienamen wasn't an insurgency, just a protest, much like the protests of the Uighurs, and the protests of the Iranian democracy activists. It is the hope of American's however that such protests properly fostered will become an insurgency to effect regime change (peacefully or otherwise) in these totalitarian countries.

No serious China watcher ever hopes for a change of regime by violent insurgency in China. On this one, you plain don't know what you're talking about. If there are some idiots in the think tanks around Washington D.C. that hope for such an outcome, it would be very good if they were given new jobs and identities on a farm in North Dakota growing Spring wheat. Cheneyism doesn't work very well anywhere, it would be a total disaster in China.

In all cases however, the support of the U.S. for the protesters goes little beyond kind words and hope, as the real world political necessities of the situation often make anything more counter productive.

The "political necessity" with regards to China is that regime change by revolution there takes on average 60 - 300 years and leaves up to a hundred million dead. If you are supporting violent regime change in China, please keep it to your basement and don't let it go outside.

Uighur separatists don't care about bringing down the totalitarian regime in Beijing. They care about not being part of China.

NOB - Eric Rudolph

Further to that, didn't the locals aid and abet this terrorist-murderer for a couple of years?

Way to go, red white and blue American citizens! You're a credit to your country.

@two blind eyes

Eric Rudolph? . . . what is your point?

He is in prison, where he belongs.

What if the Han Chinese were White?

Would the attacks on the Han civilians by the rioters have been seen as a massacre? Would the efforts to bring an end to the slaughter of Han Chinese by the government been supported? The attacks on civilians in Mumbai on the other hand was "tragic" and the Indian government's response to it was lauded - the treatment of Muslims in India by the government notwithstanding.

The West displays nasty schadenfreude whenever Han Chinese die. This is Sharon Stone on the earthquake in China: "Then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice, that the bad things happen to you?" Compare and contrast the reporting of the Tibet riots by the West and by other sources: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=8697

NP NP

30 years ago cities like Nazareth and Bethlehem were more than 70% Christian. Today they hover between 5-10% Christian. They were expelled, often at gunpoint by the very Palestinians you purport to support.

You really don't know what you're talking about. Israel undertook a violent and complete blockade of mostly Christian Bethlehem eight years ago, causing a mass exodus from Bethlehem and an influx of Muslims from other cities and rural areas.

What's more figures that show a decline in Christian populations in Arab cities always present that information as a proportion, neglecting the fact that cities throughout the middle east have seen their populations sky-rocket as a result of immigration from rural areas--this is partiuclarly true in Ramallah, where the population has increased dramatically in the past fifteen years mostly from muslim rural area. Most rural populations are majority muslim, thus the proportion of Christians decreases but may even stay relatively the same.

But NAZARETH IS IN ISRAELI PROPER! In 1940 its population was 60% Christian, but it didn't start declining until ISRAEL TOOK IT OVER IN 1948!!!!! In fact, its population has relatively been stable for the last "30 years".

@NOB

Eric Rudolph? . . . what is your point?

Terrorist...check.

Fair trial...check.

Human rights respected...check.

Muslim...? No check.

Are you still going to insist you don't see the point?

Islamophobia needs a new name

The following was posted to a public, non-political, chat board I frequent, on the 4th of July. When one person very mildly suggested the posting was racist, others accused the objector of not having a sense of humor.

Don't forget to mark your calendars.

As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked. He must commit suicide if he does. So next Saturday at 4 PM Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.

All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their house to prove they are not Muslims, & to demonstrate they think it's okay to see nude women other than their wife, & to show support for all American women. Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your anti-Muslim sentiment. We American's appreciate your efforts to root out terrorists & applaud your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.

God bless America !

Being a "racist" or an "anti-semite" is a bad thing (which is a good thing). Unfortunately, so far there's no word for anti-Muslim which brings with it the same automatic revulsion the other two words do. Although maybe that's simply because it is not considered beyond the Pale to want to kill all muslims, or turn their countries into "glass parking lots". Too many of us applaud the demonization.

About the time that humans have started to understand and appreciate all the different races and groups on earth and stop demonizing "the other" because there are no others....some three-legged green guys from Outer Space will appear, and we'll start the cycle anew.
