What if the Uighurs were Christian rather than Muslim?

Violent clashes in China underscore an ugly reality of the War on Terror.

"The big plan by the west is to cut up Sudan into at least 3 separate countries: The country of (oil-rich and western friendly) Darfur, the country of (oil-rich and western friendly)Southern Sudan, and (oil starved and western hated) Northern Sudan. Get real folks."
And how does the "West" plan to do that? Cut off two thirds of the country from the existing government which, hated or not, has a friend on the Security Council (China)? Get real, folk.

Glenn writes:

Given all the ways we enable Israeli actions -- financial, military, diplomatic -- there are very few people who would interpret an Israeli attack on Iran as being done without American approval.

Along those same lines, can anyone take seriously Obama's "concern" over the illegal Honduran military coup when the coup plotters are still in power one week after their crime? Honduras' military is basically run from the Pentagon... if our government truly wanted Zelaya restored to power, he would have been sitting in the presidential palace within 48 hours.

With whom do Muslims get along with peacefully?

Muslims seemingly claim to be persecuted anywhere they do not enjoy unchallenged religious, cultural and political authority.

Groups Muslims cannot seem to peacefully disagree with:

Communists in China, USSR

Buddhists in Thailand and Sri Lanka

Hindus in Indonesia, Pakistan and India

Baha'i

Syriac-rite Christians

Orthodox Christians

African Christians (especially Copts, Ethiopians)

non-Abrahamic African groups (think southern Sudan)

Protestants

Catholics

Jews

Athetists, agnostics, secularists.

Muslims on the otherside of the Shi'a/Sunni divide

uknowwhiIam, I did not use the word "genocide" but must congratulate for getting out of

Sudan without having had any nasty experiences. Kidnapping of aid workers is going on quite a lot - French, Canadian and just now two women have been abducted, whereabouts unknown. One is Kenyan and the other is Irish. This type of kidnapping is usually for a ransom. China and the West, you obviously know which is best.

Are we supposed to support the Uighers ... because "they are training for homeland independence"?

There is a difference between supporting them in general and releasing a dozen locked up at Gitmo. Apparently you think they should stay there. Why?

Monday, July 6, 2009 12:30 PM

It would make no difference . . .

The right has shown sympathy for the anti-Zelaya, anti-democratic faction in Honduras's conflict, which involves a largely Christian nation.

In Iran they have shown sympathy for a democracy movement in a largely Muslim nation.

It's a fools game looking for an operating principle based exclusively on the Muslim-Christian framing.

@ondelette

I was not making assumptions about you per se. Rather I was preaching to the masses as it were and I addressed you directly because you brought up Sudan. Please accept my apologies if i offended you.

In regards to the special prosecutor: Yes, I believe the people who enable him are interested in Sudan's oil. He is a puppet.

And why would the US and UK sit by idly and allow China to buy up all that oil when they could make things difficult and more expensive for them by causing instability in the region? Send in the CIA!

Finally, diamonds (and other precious stone/mineral) minds typically have a lower profit margin than oil fields. So put the army where the money is.

@Ms. Anthropia

The Muslims in Dearborn Michigan seem to get along fine with everybody else in Michigan, so perhaps it's not the religion by the region of the world that is at issue.

It's hard not to be neighborly in Michigan.

Obsessive self-hatred

Here Glenn has woven a simple web of lies and contortions (anti-Moslem "racism") around a piece of news with absolutely no connection to the US, and used that news to put down the US.

Glenn's hatred of the US, and Israel, two principal components of his identity, is quite sad. I pity him.

Let's not forget some other important groups:

- Women who want to pick their own clothes

- Sisters/daughters who want to pick their own husbands

- Gays who want to pick their own mates

- Scientists who want to explore the world

- Musicians, artists, and writers who want to make it beautiful, or make a statement

You are so right! The CIA has been doing that, causing instability, in foreign countries since the 1950's. Thank god above! The world is so much the better for their efforts. Perhaps they could also bring some real harsh torture into the region to make them more humane and the torture, I'm sorry, the enhanced interrogation techniques, will surely convince them not deal with China?

Reality, Clockwork

There's good reason to believe that racism as we know it today was created and promoted to justify the Atlantic slave trade and the maintenance of a pacified slave population in the US. Before the emergence of cotton as a super-product, slavery was a really different institution than the chattel version that it subsequently became. Inter-marriage in the colonial world was not only common, it went almost completely unnoticed.

In a sense greed was the catalyst; subsequently racism turned out to be such a socio-political management tool--and it proved so helpful in not only providing justification but excited popular support, for colonialism and imperialism--that no elite power group ever felt like they could live without it.

This is a great book along those lines:

@calamine, it seems that Jews pop up everywhere in your posts but Jews and Zionists are not

interchangeable. Maybe you've found out that there are some of your co-rligionists in Xinjiang Province which has Afghanistan to the West? A 19 year old youth has been shot dead just down the road from the USA, demonstrating against the military coup in which President Zelaya was deposed but we'll have to wait for the T-shirts with the statement "I am Neda" and the media going all a-twitter about "democracy" as it did about Iran. This poor guy's name is probably Juan and he may, or may not, have been goodlooking. It won't create the same frisson, that's for sure, for reasons that are as clear as daylight.

calamine, "your people" are blockading Gaza by land and by sea over six months after pulverizing the place. Please ask them to show a little humanity and allow the Iranians to sort out their own business without the CIA and Mossad trying to foment trouble for their own devious purposes. British M15 (or is it M16?) are believed to be involved too? Oh nevah! They just love Saudi Arabia and it must be because of its flourishing democracy.
