and if Bashir in Sudan wasnt an islamist, bin laden would be calling for jihad on sudan for Darfur...yadda yadda..If the Palestinians were not mostly muslims do you think we would still be talking about them?
Hell, the christians in the south of Sudan have been oppressed (heck, sold into slavery) and fighting for over a decade, yet more people know about the oppression of the black muslim population in Darfur.
So...there ya go.
Look glen.. Currently the US army has troops in Kosovo, they did not go in on the side of the christians, did they?
See what I'm saying?
Look, if the Uighurs were christian, he is the difference, the muslim world would not care and the rest of the world would barely care.... go ask Papua (in Indonesia).
"Rather than support and venerate them, we instead spent this decade declaring them to be "enemy combatants" and locking them up in Guantanamo"
Them? What?
Like all of them? Or a group of guys that got mixed up in A-stan and were thought to be working with AlQuada (..my point is, as far as I know they were not taken for being Uighurs..and then later the US did NOT send them back to China).
See, you are babbling.
"Uighurs were swept into the Enemy category"
They are? What are you even talking about?
Glen, for starters there are like a dozen Uighur lobby groups in the US. Heck, the fried chicken place down the street from me is owned by Uighurs. There are two Uighurs my dad works with in the lab who are here on student visas.
"and continue to imprison -- people at Guantanamo whose only political interest is in resisting oppression by the Chinese government?"
as covered that is NOT the reason they were imprisoned at gitmo. It was due to the fact that they thought (wrongly) they they were tied to AQ (as some militant islamist Uighur groups are).
You're problem is you are having an imaginary argument with Glen Beck over a straw man.
>>>Why don't we see Jews running through the streets murdering people...
Because running through the streets is undignified and inefficient, particularly when we have fighter-bombers.
>>>But in part the hatred of Jews spreads because people with a voice such as Glenn are so filled with self loathing they actual justify the blood lies and refuse to defend his own kith and kin.
I'm going to go out on a limb, Maddymappo, and assume that you're Jewish. As one Jew to another, please let me ask you: What the fuck are you talking about? Really. What ... the ... fuck ... are ... you ... talking ... about.
It's wrong, but we do it, have have done it, and we likely will do it again.
Very likely we will.
I do hope that America, and humanity in general has a set of ideals, and a set of lines it does not cross lightly.
Lines have been crossed, and callousness has been employed, and that callousness is not limited to others. How many young soldiers have died in the cause of freedom of others? It is callouss to send their lives out for another's freedom and a profit the soldiers will not share in but that is the ideal we cling to, and for the rest of us, take profit from.
I try, as do many I feel, to walk with the saints, but I am also a catholic, which means i know that man is destined to fall in that goal more than he succeeds.
I don't think it's cynicism, just an aknowledgement of all humanity's shared failings. And in that, for me atleast, I see the hope of humanity. If we all just aknowledge that we all are just incredible screw ups at life, maybe we all can get a long just a little bit better, and we can stop holding grudges against one another for ideology and mistakes we and others have made.
We all make mistakes, kings and men alike, and we all make the choices we feel are best for us and those around us. I try not to judge any, though I suppose my reasons for not judgeing are judgements in themselves.
"But I think some people are willing to leave some of their greed unsatisfied in order to remain racist."
-- Mike Sulzer
While there is the possiblity, I think that if we define greed more broadly that the simple aquisition of wealth or power, we will see that for many racist ideology does provide advantage to an individual. It strengthens one's sense of community and belonging which although less material than advantages they might find in not being racist, is more valuable to the racist than those material possessions.
In that situation you are discussing a small subset of humanity, who will cling for personal reasons to a racist ideology. In order for that ideology however to be inacted broadly within a society direct advantages for the masses needs to be presented. Sometimes that mass advantage is simply the right to feel bigger than someone else (as was the case with poor uneducated whites during Jim Crow who could look down their nose at any african american doctor they met)but an advantage must be provided in order for the ideal to be embraced large scale.
There are numerous ways something can be profitable to you, it can give you an advantage in meeting a mate, in providing for yourself and your loved ones, it can offer additional perceived protection to yourself and your loved ones. One can be greedy for peace and security for example. This is essentially the justification for torture in many peoples minds, because we so want to feel safe, we will embrace the abhorant because it gives us solace in an unsafe world.
In this we can see exactly how September 11th 2001 did change everything much in the way December 7th 1941 changed everything. Before September the 11th reasonable men would not see any advantage in torture, before December 7th resonable men would not see any advantage in force internment and imprisonment without trial. After such events however such notions become acceptable because they are advantagous to the individual. It makes you feel safer to know that we water board, or those inscrutable japanese are now locked away. We embrace that which is horrific because it makes us feel as if we are not helpless.
It's wrong, but we do it, have have done it, and we likely will do it again.
