The NYT calls Iranian interrogation tactics "torture"

Techniques which the paper refuses to call "torture" when used by the U.S. magically transform when used by others.

The letters thread is now closed.

Paul

Did you actually read that whole post you're referring to?

Yes, you are correct and it is too bad in many respects.

I don't see much end to it unless Glenn wants to just say no more and make it apply to all concerned and not just one side. Or, ban the whole bunch. Or, ban just one side. Whatever.

As to "worldview", I would beg to differ with you a bit. I think "worldview" is the cause of the dust-ups in the first place. A reading of Thomas Sowell's work on conflicting visions would show the problem.

I have noticed that the worst personal attacks seem to always start when we get to seriously discussion on war and empire now that the Democrats control the government. Coincidence? I think not.

@ pieceofcake

“insane? - Glenn?” – pieceofcake

I did not say that Glenn is insane.

This is what I said:

“So, if you don’t propose any new ideas as to what to do with the terrorists in the future, but, instead, keep saying the same things day after day, your writing might eventually fit the classical definition of insanity.”

The emphasis is on new ideas, new solutions. Right now, the subject of torture is a fixation with Gleen. Repeating the same facts without proposing anything at all will lead into that category.

I liked your comparison of Glenn with “a good soul standing on the corner of the street yelling: Repent ye sinner.”

To be realistic, how long is it going to take before the people get annoyed by the same message and walk right by this guy on the corner without even looking at him?

And what about Honduras, hunh?

There's a bit of unpleasantness there, we're led to believe, concerning the "overthrow" of some "president" or other, isn't there?

This is said to be the first "overthrow" of an elected "president" in Central America in 16 years, and it may mark a reversion to Things As They Used To Be in that part of the world.

And just how were they? Characterized by torture and murder, eh? Dictatorship by an oligarchic ruling class, yes? Supported in their torture, murder and dictatorship by the Foreign Policy Establishment (and the White House) in Washington DC, correct?

John Negroponte, bloody-handed war criminal, directed the activities of the torturers and murderers in Central America from his perch as American ambassador to Teguchigalpa, so they say. John Negroponte who provided his elegant expertise to the Iraqi death squads when he was ambassador to Baghdad, yes?

Is torture, murder and dictatorship by an oligarchic ruling class the way of the future, as it has been the way of the past in Central America?

Everything old is new again?

Curious about your opinion

Glenn, there are two subjects that i would really like to get your opinion on. one of them is your take on Cynthia McKinney. (i was surprised that Haaretz doesn't mention one word about her, even though she is under arrest in Israel.)

Well, you still visit this board, so it will be a while yet.

Amusing

It is amusing to contemplate all the self-styled libertarians, talking of self-reliance and not mooching on others, who may be infesting the comments here because writing on their own elsewhere might get them zero eyeballs. And then some of them complain about GG, too!

can't wait for the NY Times to fall

Our corporate media are in big trouble, financially. Personally, I cannot wait until they declare bankruptcy. They are no longer relevant to democracy.

califmike -

'how long is it going to take before the people get annoyed by the same message and walk right by this guy on the corner without even looking at him'?

That's an interesting question I was 'pondering' for some time too - and I first thought - with the election of Obama Glenn would have to look for other 'subjects' to get 'annoyed' about -

but now I consider him to be Obamas bad conscious (kind off) - and I think we need even more people to 'annoy' the new President and not only about torture - It seems to bring the best 'out of him' - (don't you know he invites critic and even loves it) -

So there! -

And as I am not willing to criticize Obama to Glenns extent I'm happy having him do it!

That's right, Petuunia

"Thank you. Your thinking helps me remember to respect common sense."-- Petuunia

And for those that think Glenn is "too idealistic" and is "beating a dead horse", well what can you say! They're just a bunch of pathetic no-life's and envy his position and intelligence. More importantly, they wish they too possessed that rarest of human sensibilities- common sense*.

*(what an oxymoron)

Torture, torture, torture - Broken Record

I am mortified at my recent reactions to your articles. I trust your intent to report information based on the best facts available. I generally align with your assessment of the topics covered.

So, perhaps it's important information that I've found my liberal self rolling my eyes in reaction to the recent excoriation of NPR and the NYT in your articles. It is apparent that you are passionate on this subject. The subject requires the consistency of your attention. Yet, that first reaction I am beginning to exhibit concerns me. If someone of my leanings is beginning to react this way, you may be getting more personal about this topic than serves either you or your readers. But what do I know. . .

Paul

I'm not in that category from that crap quote that you so easily bought into. The guy called Ondelette a blood lusting murderer one day, and then "my friend" two days later. He has called many here, including me, blood thirsty warmongering murderers and the like for years now. It's disgusting. I simply posted a short comment pointing out the atrociousness of referring to Ondelette as "my friend" after calling him 'blood lusting for the murder of women and children'. If you think that calling someone out for that is equal to actually making those disgusting accusations I don't know what to tell you.
