Establishment view of Obama's civil liberties record

That Obama is replicating core Bush policies is acknowledged by everyone other than his most loyal supporters.

Ok, Bernie, what are you smokin'?

They are detainees who were picked up in terrorist training camps.

No, they weren't.

Ondelette

you beat me to it. It can't the former since a judgment call that a surge is needed can't be a lie - it's a judgment call (unless, of course, the lie is that he really doesn't think a surge is needed and is just doing it for fun).

Bamage, I was going to say to Harry that I don't really want to leave in disgust so thanks for the sentiment.

Forget the details, however, and let's just say this one more time, slowly: Obama is a p o l i t i c i a n!

And as such, you can trust a damn thing he says. Do you hang around with wbgonne?

@wyne11

Your failure to recognize this rather obvious fact – that Obama’s decision was driven by the desire to preserve his own relationship with the troops he commands – demonstrates, if I may say, one of your MAJOR blindspots, and that is the occasional inability to recognize that the various players in Washington and the public discourse are bound by the roles in which they find themselves.

Your failure is understanding that the troops in defending our country also means they are defending our laws and institutions. Two Federal courts have already ORDERED the Obama Administration to release these photos under FOIA. Why wouldn't the troops want to defend these court decisions too? And if Obama doesn't agree with the appellate court decision he can appeal it to the USSC.

I am certainly not one faulting Obama for exercising his right to appeal this decision but I am faulting him for reneging on an agreement to release these photos he had made with the ACLU and the Court.

If the USSC says he doesn't have to release these photos that will end the matter even if we don't like this decision.

What isn't acceptable to me and I think I speak for many others including Glenn is what Obama could do if he decides he doesn't want to appeal this decision feeling/knowing he would lose at the USSC because his arguments so far have been weak and ineffective and he can't raise new ones that haven't been raised before. What he could possibly do is this: 1) Defy two court orders and not release these photos [I don't think he is stupid enough to do this]. 2. Retroactively attempt to change and thus weaken FOIA to put these photos under Executive branch rules as something that don't have to be released. 3) Issue an Executive order effectively and retroactively modifying and weakening FOIA to prevent their release. Both 2) and 3) would result in more lawsuits being filed against the government. If he did 1) hopefully a judge would toss his ass in jail or Congress would move to impeach him.

@ ondolette

Sorry, that wasn't very clear. The lie is that we need troops there because of the terr-ists there. There have always been "terr-ists" there; we just defined them as such in the last 8 years. Before that, when they were on OUR side, they were freedom fighers.

We are not there because of them, imo. We are there because of the oil/gas pipeline project. It's all part of the geopolitical imperialism that's been in play since, well, the 80s at least.

I should have added one more option Obama has to my list as No. 4: He could ask Lieberman and Graham to add their amendment to yet another bill that could pass this time that he would sign into law. But this would also be a retroactive law that would be challenged in court and thus an unacceptable move too.

Oh really. I think you little behind on the news. The troop in Iraq have been withdrawing for the last few months, and the last of the troops in Iraq pulling out this week?

Horseshit.

Why do you wonder why folks in these parts think you're a nutcase.

How many troops do we currently have in Iraq, Bernbart?

Roughly 135,000.

That's a lot of troops to move in a week.

Our Iran "policy" is worse than the photos.

400 million dollars were allocated "above board" to destabilize Iran and foment regime change in lieu of another Iraq type invasion. That is why the MSM has been lock step on Iran following the CIA's instructions to a tee. It was all a scam. Since the CIA orchestrated overthrow didn't work out so well, Obama PETULANTLY cancelled a July 4 visit and meeting with Iranian officials.

WELL, IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LET US OVERTHROW YOUR GOVERNMENT "PEACEFULLY", WE ARE NOT INVITING YOU TO OUR PARTY!

Obama stamps fit for emphasis.

What? Is Obama a five year old?

He outdoes even Grouch Marx in Duck Soup:

"Barack "Firefly" Obama: I'd be unworthy of the high trust that's been placed in me if I didn't do everything in my power to keep our beloved Freedonia in peace with the world. I'd be only too happy to meet with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and offer him on behalf of my country the right hand of good fellowship. And I feel sure he will accept this gesture in the spirit of which it is offered. But suppose he doesn't. A fine thing that'll be. I hold out my hand and he refuses to accept. That'll add a lot to my prestige, won't it? Me, the head of a country, snubbed by a foreign President. Who does he think he is, that he can come here, and make a sap of me in front of all my people? Think of it - I hold out my hand and that hyena refuses to accept. Why, the cheap ball-pushing swine, he'll never get away with it I tell you, he'll never get away with it.

[Mahmoud Ahmadinejad enters]

Barack "Firefly" Obama: So, you refuse to shake hands with me, eh?

[slaps Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with his glove]"
