The Washington Post fires its best columnist. Why?

One of the rarest media commodities -- someone who criticizes Democrats "from the Left" -- just got rarer still.

The letters thread is now closed.

WAPO loses, not Dan Froomkin!

We owe Dan Froomkin many thanks for constantly being objective and for speaking truth to power. Today is a sad day for the WAPO because it has sunk so low. Dan will go on to bigger and better opportunities. He would make a great editor for any newspaper or blog. After reading all the comments here, I must say that the majority of you are fine Americans. Power is what Dan needs and power is what the aggressive progressives need to achieve to restore this country to its peak that was respected here at home and around the world.

Unlike you Glenn, I will speculate to a small degree from the only official WaPoo statement

“Editors and our research teams are constantly reviewing our online content to ensure we bring readers the most value when they are on our Web site while balancing the need to make the most of our resources. Regrettably, this means that sometimes features must be eliminated, and this time it was the blog that Dan Froomkin freelanced” to The Post’s Web site.

The bold faced words mean Dan was always an outsider. In the Ombudsman explanation note these bold faced words.

When it began, the column was called “White house Briefing.” But the name was changed after concerns by some at The Post newspaper that readers might believe Froomkin was a White House reporter, working alongside those offering objective news reporters.

Froomkin probably spoke the truth and criticized the insiders once too often.

Post Axes Froomkin's "White House Watch" (see sig)

I'll miss Dan until he lands somewhere else or decides to take another path. Not all the pundits left are RWAs. I have a lot of respect for Eugene Robinson, E.J. Dionne jr. , Fareed Zakaria, and sometimes Michael Kinsley. Take a look at the full list and see who else remains as a voice to counter all the RWA propaganda. Not many and one very important one was axed.

Without the Howell Woman

and now without Froomkin, there's no reason to read the WaPo at all. Just because Richard Cohen still has a job there, and Atrios will still link to his mewling, I can't be bothered with that corrupt and rotten court circular any more.

Funny, innit, that all the OUTRAGE!!!™天of the blogosphere could not budge the Howell Woman from her useless perch.

She, as she was wont to say, had a Contract.

Froomkin didn't, I guess.

Someone please please please ask . . .

Joan to hire Mr. Froomkin here and replace either Paglia, Keillor, or Glenallen the Douche. The latter three are a sad joke around here and Mr. Froomkin is the real deal. Certainly couldn't hurt the page hits calculator. Keillor gets about 15 comments per and that's only because I irritate his fan club by slamming him repeatedly for his defense of torture and pathetic topic choices. Paglia and the resident Wingnut are pointless for obvious reasons other than to inspire 100 page comment flame wars. They don't actually provide anything remotely resembling information, news reporting, or cogent thought.

So come on Ms. Walsh scoop up Mr. Froomkin before someone else does. Think of the possibilities of having GG and Froomkin in the same stable. All you guys can get rich and famous being one of the view voices of reason, reality and truth on the interwebs.

If you criticize Obama you will get one of 3 responses from the Obama apologists

1. you are a republican

2. you are a hillary supporter

3. you never liked Obama to begin with

Color me unsurprised

The liberal media can't tolerate liberal views.

When Salon is corporatized there will be some necessary pruning going on around here also. Or anywhere else. This is just the tail end of what has been going on for decades.

OT : Reporter: NSA analysts spied on own wives and girlfriends

This is all just red herring - like bugs in a box. Who would the gov spy on, really? ( i mean besides terrrists)

Jim Montague...

You're right about McClatchy. They should own most of our print links.

Anybody from McClatchy reading here? You have a really golden opportunity to pick up a blogger/reporter/analyst who has a large following already.

Just think about how Froomkin's readers would be upset about missing a daily fix or two whenever he was off for a few days. With lots of those on other papers, we only wish they would stay away (on their book tours, most likely) a whole lot longer.

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:58 PM

meanwhile, George Will types on...

George Will lies about global warming - and nary a peep is heard from the Post.

Froomkin, on the other hand, is fired...for what???

Is there even a ghost of an explanation for this?

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:54 PM

Does anyone else suppose

that a bit of shadenfreude is on the menu at the Krauthammer household tonight? If so, I hope they choke on it.

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:53 PM

Fuck WaPo!

Really, they are a terrible paper now since being coopted by the Neocons. Froomkin was the only reason I went to their site.

Glen, please pass on my info as to where Froomkin lands.

Hell, if Joan is smart, she would pick him up before Arianna does.

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:50 PM

I simply cannot think of even one good or even not so bad reason

to bother clicking on anything at that paper (that I refuse to name) now. Froomkin was the only reason I went there at all.

Joan! Joan! Paging Joan Walsh!!!

How about it? Can you bring him on board in any way at all?

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:39 PM

I don't recall a GLR

And who's this DCLaw you keep going on about...

Thursday, June 18, 2009 03:34 PM

I am not insane

I promise you, there was a "GLR" here a moment ago. Probably the latest incarnation of a persona non grata.

Signed out at WaPo

I wrote a letter to the editor at WaPo (letters@washpost.com), and signed out at their site.

What they were delivering to me included in large part Dan Froomkin's column. What they were getting from me was eyeball time on their ads. It's only fair that if they fail to deliver the product, I should withhold the payoff.

BTW, for some people who may not know, he's also at Nieman Watchdog.
