Jane Harman: Angry, partisan, civil liberties extremist

Overnight, the Blue Dog has been transformed from champion of the Lawless Surveillance State into a shrill advocate of investigations.

The letters thread is now closed.

My God.

That was a masterpiece. Sometimes the fish really do jump into the boat.

Cass Sunstein

will file suit on behalf of Jane any day now. It's one thing to criminalize policy differences, but wiretapping a Blue Dog is just more than any good villager can stand. She should be able to negotiate her bribes from foreign governments in private, dontcha know?

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:32 PM

Hah!

Damn, my email crossed your post in the ether. I just sent this nugget to you. I knew you'd love it.

Eventually, I'll be angry. But honestly all I can do right now is laugh hysterically.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:33 PM

What does Jane Harman have to hide?

Maybe the CIA could torture her to find out? Worst case scenario is she decides torturing people is wrong.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:33 PM

oh, the sarcasm, the sarcasm

...on a slight tangent, strikes Jane might be just a tad concerned about her seat in Congress, not to mention the fact that she probably committed at least an indictable offense..

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:34 PM

yes, the irnoy

Ahh, yes. The irony and hypocrisy certainly are delicious. I hope some one will ask her all of the questions you have raised here.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:36 PM

Inquiring minds want to know

You wrote this in 2008, right? You were just waiting to fill in the blanks, e.g.,

But when the U.S. Government legally and with warrants eavesdrops on [Enter Congressperson's name here], that is an outrageous invasion of privacy and a violent assault on her rights as an American citizen.
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:37 PM

YES!

You really hit your stride with that one Glenn. Bravo!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:38 PM

Hahaha

It is almost indecent how much you enjoyed writing that.

Almost.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:38 PM

That Was Freaking Awesome, Spot On

You outlined in perfect form exactly what needed to be said about this topic. Just perfect!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:40 PM

Thanks

Glenn

You rock. Thank goodness there is someone out there who calls a spade a spade no matter what. Love it, Love it, Love it. Keep up the awesome work, nobody does it better.

Cheers

dewey

Glenn!

Me thinks me notes a wee-bit of sarcasm in your latest if I'm not mistaken.

It really is beyond satire and belief. These people are so removed from reality.

It is really a fucking joke.

criminalize policy differences

I forgot that one, and it's one of the worst. I'm sure I'll have occasion to include it in an update. Isn't it amazing how many unctuous, manipulative phrases have been invented by the political class to demand the right to break the law with impunity?

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:42 PM

You are making my week

Between the twitter bombs and this gem, I hope you get a tv show soon.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:43 PM

Beautiful, Surely, Absolutely, and Why Not?

So if I understand this correctly -- and I'm pretty sure I do -- when the U.S. Government eavesdropped for years on American citizens with no warrants and in violation of the law, that was both "legal and necessary," ... But when the U.S. Government legally and with warrants eavesdrops on Jane Harman, that is an outrageous invasion of privacy and a violent assault on her rights as an American citizen, and full-scale investigations must be commenced immediately to get to the bottom of this abuse of power. Behold Jane Harman's overnight transformation from Lawless Surveillance State champion to shrill civil liberties extremist.

Heh.

And while I haven't read the rest of your post yet, I had to chime in--immediately!--and say to Jane, as it were, "Hey, is that a big fuckin' surprise, or what?"

The good news: I started taking blood pressure medication.

goring oxen

They say a liberal is a conservative who has never been mugged.

I say an authoritarian is a civil libertarian who doesn't yet realize that she has been spied upon.

Epic snark today, Glenn.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:49 PM

Huh?

Jane Harman? You're shitting me!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:54 PM

Breaking News

Senator appears to have committed treason, Attorney General blocks investigation into alleged treason because said senator is aiding and abetting his crimes at the DOJ, senator's actions earn her a prestigious title for oversight of our espionage crews and

SHE SAYS SHE HAS NOTHING TO HIDE!!

Meanwhile I'm just happy that this is finally breaking into the boob tube.

Thanks Glenn. Now I'm gonna throw up.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:55 PM

Jane Harman is so shrill and angry today. She sounds like some sort of unhinged blogger.

I even see a family resemblance. Is she your sister?

=:-)

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:58 PM

Beautiful!

Do you suppose Ms. Jane even realizes how cognitively dissonant she sounds? Is she really, really clever or really, really stupid?

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:58 PM

What do you call a person

for whom laws only apply to other people- after all, you are one of the aristocracy that needs obey only the commands (questioning of which means punishment) of those of status superior to your own in The Natural Order Of Things.... Oh, yes: a right winger.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:59 PM

Brilliant - thank you

I can add nothing but my congratulations on this wondeful piece. Watching the congresswoman hoist on her own petard has provided the most delicicious schadenfreude.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 01:59 PM

Glenn Greenwald, dammit anyway!

*sigh*

I love you, man. ;-)

That was gold as pure and as sparkly as gold gets.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 02:00 PM

@avelna2001

Neither. She's really, really dishonest.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 02:00 PM

Jane Hartman

what could be more commonplace than a Democrat who knows what is best for others but excuses herself from the party? Is this really even noteworthy? Isn't this the Democratic creedo? "Sit down, shut up and listen while I tell you what is good for you, but don't expect me to abide by that silly old tax law, and don't expect me to use that National Health Plan I am voting in for you guys, and don't expect me to be responsible for the chuckleheaded way I waste your money...In point of fact the only way this story would be newsworthy Glenn is if Janie the Democrat did not balk about being treated as Janie the ordinary Joe.

I Was Nearly Smothered

by the sarcasm dripping off of this article.

We can only hope that her “wish” is granted and the tapes of her conversations are released.

harman's office keeps hanging up on me

for some reason, whenever I call jane harman's office and bring up things like "if she didn't do anything wrong, she has nothing to fear, just like every other American" her staff hangs up on me.

They also hang up when, in response to official statements like "it never happened", i point out that there were warrants and everything was done by the book. and yes, they did tell me that the conversation "never happened".

And don't even use the words "hoist" or "petard", because that makes them hang up too.

Can you say "someone's testy"?

Personally, i am delighted by this turn of events. I will be making more fun tomorrow. Any suggestions for what to ask jane Harman's office?
