Endless right-wing self-pity

No matter how large their presence grows in the establishment media, conservative self-victimization remains central to their mythology.

The letters thread is now closed.

Is it really...

Is it really that conservative views are subject to challenge, especially fact-based challenge in the media that so bothers the conservatives?

i think nothing beats -

your last threat in self-pity!

It's the same with religion

they all claim to be under attack meanwhile they campaign to take away other people's rights.

Colbert Rocks! (As Usual)

Satire is really the only effective tool against these fools. Anyone who takes that asshat Beck seriously is beyond repair and can only be quarantined.

Laughter is truly the best medicine.

Aggressive Victimhood Justifies; When Fear no Longer Works

Wars are started by "victims" (Gulf of Tonkin; WMD's - need I go on?)

Entire Victim nations enslave and rob

Victimhood confers righteousness

Victimhood is endlessly motivating

Victimhood projects; victimhood rejects

Beck's fans are victims of brainwashing of their own inadequacy.

Fuck what a venal sick society that accords this guy an audience.

Bashing

People with this degree of ideological entitlement and cultural isolation mistake anything that isn't deference for bashing.

Why not? It's always worked on their followers. Personally, I see them as a lot of polysyllabic bullies who bought their Central Park West apartments 50 years ago for bupkes and have looked down their noses ever since.

And dynasties of them, yet.

the Colbert part

if somebody wants to write up a brief gist of what Colbert's video is about, that would be great. I can't watch it for ten hours and am just curious what the idea is...I certainly get that it's not possible to transfer the humor.

Thanks

@carol richards

It's better if you just wait and watch it cold. It's a tour-de-force savaging of Glenn Beck and his cancerous mendacity, his phony patriotism and abject pandering to the worst in his none-too-bright audience of gullible shut-ins and angry paranoiacs. Enjoy it without having already sort-of experienced through second-hand description.

Self-pity is the main identifier of sociopaths.

I know you may be annoyed that I keep bringing up the modern theories on human nature and neuroscience. The Sociopath Next Door. The Mask of Sanity. The User Illusion. Scientific American Mind has an article on defense mechanisms, the limits of conscious awareness, and dissociative thought in its' current issue. I am eager to see these ideas fully accepted and used as a matter of course in intelligent discussion. The labels of conservative and liberal need to be separated from the idea of left-wing and right wing. The former two categories can both hold people of conscience, the latter are both often the province of non conscience consciousness.

@Carol Richards

I can't watch [Colbert's video] for ten hours

Lucky, then, that it only goes for 8 minutes.

Michelle Bachmann is in the same league as Beck

She was on his show railing against the non-existent threat of a global currency, which she appears to believe is a grand conspiracy to undermine the country. Unbelievably, her Constitutional Amendment to combat this mythical threat now has 30 co-sponsors. Here's a list of the tin foil hat crowd, who buy into her paranoia:

Todd Akin (R-MO)

Spencer Bachus (R-AL)

Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD)

Judy Biggert (R-IL)

Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)

Paul Broun (R-GA)

Henry Brown (R-SC)

Dan Burton (R-IN)

Michael Conaway (R-TX)

John Culberson (R-TX)

Mary Fallin (R-OK)

John Fleming (R-LA)

Virginia Foxx (R-NC)

Phil Gingrey (R-GA)

Louie Gohmert (R-TX)

Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)

Darrell Issa (R-CA)

Walter Jones (R-NC)

Steve King (R-IA)

Mark Kirk (R-IL)

Doug Lamborn (R-CO)

Tom McClintock (R-CA)

Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI)

Ron Paul (R-TX)

Joseph Pitts (R-PA)

Bill Posey (R-FL)

Tom Price (R-GA)

David Roe (R-TN)

John Shadegg (R-AZ)

Glenn Thompson (R-PA)

@Robert1014, 'nuff said

thanks. that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Thanks Glenn

My one comment for the day.

I loved Colbert's Satire, and I'm still laughing. At least Beck and other psychos on FOX supply the comics with material.

As far as conservatives feeling sorry for themselves. How often do they invite liberal commentators to write in their magazines? They get air time on PBS NewsHours when they are willing to come on opposite a liberal in a reasonable discussion.

Years ago William Buckley had a regular show on PBS. Even though he often raised the hairs on the back of my neck, at least on his show conservatives attempted to engage in intellectual discussions with liberals.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 10:12 AM

Hey

It's tough being a conservative goober. They listen to Limbaugh for 3 hours a day then later on watch Beck and Hannity for 2 more. They buy Coulter's books and love Palin. In my book that's a fucking victim. Big time.

Nested Parentheses:

A sign that Glenn is writing with true passion!

Thanks, Glenn, and keep it up.

I saw that video early this morning

...and it's really a hoot!

I still have to rank Colbert tops in exhibiting the most personal bravery while maintaining a persona. No one else even comes close.

Someone else mentioned to me the subject of Beck's poetry, which I have so far not been interested enough to investigate. However, I am having second thoughts.

When it comes to political satire

I prefer Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to either Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. He sometimes makes actual sense and when he plays the "victim card", he has much more credibility. Does anyone know if he's getting his own show?

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 10:25 AM

Colbert cliche - "The Guy's a Genius", but really...

...was that not the funniest take-down, perhaps, ever? When they do the cut-back to Colbert in that get-up after the bit about how we all felt on 9/12? He kills.

GG, how went the event? Do you get to enjoy Ithaca at all?

Liberal Media Bias is No Myth

Liberal bias in the media had been studied, and demonstrated many times. Here is one example, an article discussing a study conducted by a UCLA professor;

http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/Media-Bias-Is-Real-Finds-UCLA-6664.aspx

Glenn seems to be suggesting that since the NY Times, LA Times, and others have printed opinion pieces by conservative columnists, that media bias does not exist.

Silly conclusion, for these reasons;

1) If a newspaper prints volumes of liberal BS, ignores negatives stories about democrats, and then prints a column by Bill Kristol. . . . it doesn't undo it's mountain of BS (you know, like, "we have a copy of George Bush's National Guard record...").

2) Why even focus on the pundits when discussing the "myth" of liberal bias? An examination of the news stories provided by the media is a better measure (as is the stories they ignore).

3) The rise of Fox News, and the popularity of the Drudge Report is due, in part, because of the existence of the liberal bias. . . . there was a segment of the market that was not being served.

The role of the pundit continues to morph into that of an entertainer. . . . Plus, they are getting full of themselves. They spend too much time talking about one another as opposed to issues.

Example: How many times has pompous keith olderman named Rush, Coulter, Hannity, or O'Reilly as "the worst person in the world?") . . . meanwhile;

* hundreds of billions in TARP money is going to banks, and we really don't know how it is being spent, and if it is doing any good.

* obama continues launching attacks upon suspected terrorists in Pakistan, dropping bombs, resulting in collateral damage, w/o the Paki's approval. . . . War Crime?

* Scientists who doubt that man's activities cause global warming and offer up scientific evidence and arguments, have a hard time getting attention from the MSM.

Columns by pundits is not a good indicator, or lack thereof, of media bias. Reporting of facts is better.

Glenn states the liberal media is a myth. He can't counter the studies that prove otherwise.
