Unfortunately what you see is what you get with Salon's letters to the editor. I'm guessing, but I wonder if Salon picked this software based on it being so *different* from other forum packages. Basically they thought it was cool and edgy and just different enough to separate Salon from the rest of the pack on the 'net.
Personally, I wish they'd scrap this piece of fecal matter and go with a real NNTP setup. That's "Network News Transfer Protocol" for the newbies. It'd be a throw-back to the days of Usenet, but it would allow for true threading and the ability to use whatever Usenet reader strikes your fancy. Or mail client for that matter. Plus there are many, many HTTP interfaces to NNTP so Salon could have their cake and eat it too.
Baring that, I'd kill for a "ignore" or "filter" option. At least that way I can completely skip the crap and not waste the time and bytes downloading text I'm not going to read.
