I screwed part of that up. This was your question:
Earlier in the thread I mentioned "primitive" societies and their uses of drugs. What you refer to above is the introducing of drugs that are "new", i.e. 'unfamiliar', to a society, not ones that have developed as "native" over time. Did you come across info on the latter situation? "New" drugs would not, be definition, have the societal "controls" in place. Is the use/abuse of "native" drugs different?
The Yanomami is not an example of this - it's an example of a society that uses a hallucinogen for (mostly) ritualistic purposes with no "drug abuse" involved.
