Binding U.S. law requires prosecutions for those who authorize torture

The new Attorney General just said that Bush officials authorized torture. A treaty signed in 1988 by Ronald Reagan compels the U.S. to prosecute those who authorize torture. What's the way out of that?

The letters thread is now closed.

@Paul Daniel Ash

Precisely, which is why I analogize it to rape. The scary thing is how quickly the moral taboo against justifying torture fell away... and how tenuous a grasp so many among us have on their humanity.

This is what is so enormously depressing about the United States today. Steve (aka "Ticking Vagina Man") is just a small example of the multitude who supported this and other exceedingly ugly behaviors that have emanated from this administration after 9/11.

The fact is a very significant portion of the country, perhaps the majority until we began losing the Iraq war, supported this crap. There has been subsequently no great epiphany and thus no reason to really believe that anything has changed other than the fashion of the moment.

The fact is the nation showed its soul, and it was pretty ugly. Even though I implied otherwise earlier, I have to admit I don't see Obama as a rejection of this ugliness, but rather as a rejection of a failure to implement the "ugliness" properly. That is, most people aren't upset because of the bad things the Bush administration did, just that they didn't do a good job at it. Had they been more competent, they wouldn't give a damn about our miss-deeds and another Republican would have strolled into the White House. Actually frankly if Bush had just kept the economy humming properly it'd have been a done deal as well.

It's quite depressing really.

@Steele the First

Torture is a form of politcial terrorism. And the best, most experienced terrorists in the world are the Israelis.

documentation? This isn't a claim anyone knows how to support, including you.

OT...neoliberalism and US policy in Palestine...

Hi all. I read these interesting pair of articles which describe recent neoliberal World Bank policies being instituted in the West Bank via Mahmoud Abbas. It gives an interesting perspective on US and Israeli policies there that I haven't encountered elsewhere. Very well researched stuff...and unfortunately very long and wonky too [and a bit socialist...boo!].

I need to remember this should steveindallas return to Glenn's threads.

Ticking Vagina Man™ (scathew)

I hope you're wrong about this,

The fact is a very significant portion of the country, perhaps the majority until we began losing the Iraq war, supported this crap.

You may well be right. But, if you are, we've already gone over the precipice and there's no going back. I cling to the slim thread that we're still teetering on the edge instead.

Jebbie

You will have to forgive shooter, he is busy returning his in-bred relatives back to wherever they came from (Dallas?)

The bus leaves every Sunday night at about this time. But rest assured, they will be back, along with their genetically challenged mentor; to obfuscate, cloud, and generally befuddle; and unhinge, the comment section.

Be encouraged, they eat their young.

Steele

Yes but where is the comparator information? You need to provide this information for all national, religious, ethnic, and any other cohesive groups to prove your superlative. You can't.

Ondolette, just ignore this douche

Anti-zionism is his fetish. It rules his entire life, far beyond any actual goal he can accomplish through its lens. Let him rant, he usually goes away after a while.

@bystander

I need to remember this should steveindallas return to Glenn's threads.

I look forward to it!

You may well be right. But, if you are, we've already gone over the precipice and there's no going back. I cling to the slim thread that we're still teetering on the edge instead.

Honestly I don't think there's no going back even if we have gone over the edge. I think the majority might have supported McCarthy-ism but eventually they figured it out and moreover not 20 years later we were the most liberal the country probably saw since its inception.

I think it's just something to be depressed about today. Tomorrow there is always hope.

Have a great night "bystander" et al. I'm off to bed!

OT Picasa

Anybody know what a terms of service violation is on Picasa? Over at FDL they had a link to pictures put up by a Gaza reporter, I followed it and found the account closed by Google. Its just weird, given the stuff I find on YouTube all the time.

The Ticking Vagina : A Study in Semiotics

as published in the "Journal of Ivory-Tower Liberals with Too Much Time and Money on Their Hands."

The ticking vagina has been a symbol of women's power and the fear it evokes in men for centuries. This power comes from the mysterious-ness of female reproductive biology, and all of it's manifestations in social life, relationships, child-bearing, age, and even death. After I drove home to Massachusetts in my parents Volvo, from finishing grad school, I recieved grant money and a scholarship to study this theme in literature and the arts. It helped me to buy hemp clothes and excellent pot, too.

Anyway, the ticking of the vagina can represent:

- menopause (a 40+-year time-frame)

- menstruation (a monthly time-frame)

- childbirth (a 9-month time-frame

- courtship (dependent upon the social contract between male and female dating mores as manifested in the societal postmodern construct of atavistic power structures featuring pagan roles, in which the time-frame could be the few hours left before last call, or several weeks before the upcoming socially acceptable ritualistic courtship event, such as "the prom.")

- men's reproductive aging, in which the vagina becomes the testes (illustrating the greco-roman milieu of female-male dynamics in the neo-liberal mindset of the McLuhan-esque media-centric psycho-freudian imperative of feminism in it's modern incantation, refuting the Korzybsk-ian semantics of gender distance.)

--

Caveat comparator! It's an opinion. And no, anti-Zionism is not my fetish, saving my country from Perle's and swine is. I do this by educating the brain-washed masses with information hidden or censored by the Zionist-controlled media.

good night! :)
