Everyone knows the girls of the IDF rule. I myself have their 2008 calendar. It is so typical of Salon that it permits such propaganda.

So Friedman's amorality reaches a new peak - or is that a new abyss? He has only one question about the Israeli attack on Gaza: What is the goal?
It's a basic moral axiom that the ends do not justify the means. It's pretty much a no-brainer: Immoral means invalidate the morality of an end. Not only is the goal irreparably changed, but it is made immoral by the means used to achieve it.
Thus in his world unarmed civilians are a "logical' target for the Israeli army, and it's OK to call them "collateral casualties." Their lives are a fair price to pay for "educating" Hamas.
That is pure sociopathy, and it's appalling. I'd suggest he look at himself in the mirror tomorrow morning while he repeats out loud, "I think it's OK for an army to kill unarmed civilians for the purpose of educating the enemy," but I doubt that advice would do any good given the degree to which he's abandoned any sense of moral rectitude.

And worth more than American lives as well. Blowback doesn't exist in shooter's world. The possibility of radicals using the United States support of Israel in their propaganda against Americans, which will radicalize more Muslims and increase the likelihood of a terrorist attack that will lead to dead Americans, doesn't matter to Shooter. Shooter cares so little about the possibility of American actions in the Middle East radicalizing more Muslims with a mission of killing Americans, that it isn't even a possibility.
In fact, Shooter probably prays at night for terrorist attacks against Americans so that the Government can become more authoritarian, just like him, and somehow vindicate his bizzarro world logic that we need to kill more people on the other side of the planet in order to protect American citizens.
Shooter, and others like him, are proud of their chest thumping ignorance, and use it as a fuel for their "kill them all" machismo. If the United States does get hit by a terrorist cell that was in part radicalized by American support for Israel, you won't hear Shooter in here discussing such motives, he'll be in here telling everyone how he was right, that we need to "kill them all" some more, and that they hate us because of the electoral college and hemlines.

But you also belatedly disclose that you're a "New Zealander living in Germany". Sh*t, I didn't know that. I'm a 'Murikan, dammit, why would I care what you think? You're not a 'Murikan, get your butt in line. In fact, your best hope appears to be that if you can blindly support Bush quickly and blindly enough, there might yet be a Presidential Medal of Freedom in it for you, like that Aussie guy just got.

You have little information about the issue. That's been obvious from day one. You have no idea the rationales of any of the actors, including Israel, no idea why anyone there is doing anything. That's why the analogy works for you; it wouldn't be one that an Israeli citizen would use (unless of course tehy are a spin doctor here to work over vulnerable minds such as yours). Most Israelis would quite frankly laugh in your face.
You're sitting in your underwear somewhere, perhaps tumescent, watching the explosions on CNN and dreaming you had the guts to be a soldier somewhere in some conflict. But you don't have the guts. You're a coward. All you can do is watch and applaud and justify it all by pretending you are holding some higher moral ground. But its obvious from everything you wrote here that morality is the last thing on your mind.

My problem with the post is implying bias on behalf of Mr. Friedman as an argument against his logic. He may be wrong on this issue, but to claim as you clearly do that he is some kind of Zionist apologist (notice I removed to quotes this time) is entirely improper and most problematically historically untrue. Mr. Friedman is probably the most evenhanded critic that Israel has ever had. An argument could be made that no book advanced the Palestinian cause(assuming you define this cause as an autonomous state as opposed to a purge of every Jew in the Middle East) more than his. It scares me that the political left takes on the animus of the Palestinian cause (there is a romantic nature about it), without ever addressing the underlying problem. The Palestinian will NEVER get a state unless and until its supporters are as critical of it, as Isreal's supports are of it's policies.
