Jebbie, I think we have a winner...
There have been many - many! - excellent posts today, but I hereby nominate What Constitution? for his or her post at 10:13, found on page 34 of this thread.
It's on point, well written and makes an excellent point. I heartily recommend that you check it out.
Also, as a supplement to What Constitution's? post, although I can't find a link, am I not correct in saying that there has been a case where a journalist (or a civilian cheerleader/propagandist of some sort) was tried and executed for a war crime (or a crime against peace or humanity)? I can't remember enough about the circumstances to produce a Google hit, but perhaps someone knows to what I'm (vaguely) referring...?
who said up above: 'Gosh, all that do-it-by-will stuff looks so familiar. Well, I'm not gonna bother my pretty head about it.'
Is that like 'triumphing by the force of your will' or 'triumph of the will'? I've heard that before somewhere...
You know how to criticise. And the military tactics of the IDF are severe. Why don't you offer a solution ? It's real easy to be an armchair quarterback and say tsk tsk, look what they are doing. What should Israel do ? Let 30 missiles a day fall on their cities ? You are Jewish Mr. Greenwald ? If Israel is wiped out, which is the goal of the Hamas and Hezbullah and backed by Iran, you know where you will end up ?
"Now, gosh, speaking philosophy, where have we heard these ideas before? Do they come from the Old Testament? The Torah? Midrash? Apocrypha? Gosh, all that do-it-by-will stuff looks so familiar. Well, I'm not gonna bother my pretty head about it."
Well if you are implying that a certain people have the copyright to those things, "THEY" have no greater claim to that tradition than the other peoples who have the same tradition. Muslims and Christians are just Hebrew sects. That old religion was a mish-mash of Egyptian and Babylonian sources anyway. No one is practicing the real Biblical Hebrew religion anyway unless you count Sunday or Saturday BBQs. Does JHVH really like the smell of burning flesh or is that just to get to suckers to come and listen to the guys who control the beef?
Now just what does your faith and religion have to do with killing innocent civilians?
I would prefer that it be cattle instead of people.
finds the heart of the matter. IMO
I believe that part of the relatively slow international response to Israel's offensive is the story that was told in the 25% civilian casualty rate during phase
If that's a perversion of the fact that Gaza casualties are 25 times higher than the IDF, I'll lose my mind. Besides making no sense from any angle.
Ah, from America, or I guess, a comfortable spot anywheres these days, you can view everything as a series of film scenarios. Thinking about how you would make a movie about something is not the same thing as thinking about it, I think. And of course, the "Orientalism" concept frees your mind, opens it to the fantasic, exotic and barbaric.
I need a haircut, bad. So long. Tonsorialist, I cometh now!
"Are you kidding? Do you honestly believe that even a fraction of those excoriating Israel in Glenn's blog believe that? Moreover, you go on the condition the right of existence to what essentially is the destruction of Israel, i.e., a single multi-national state."
To the first question, yes, obviously. I find the second statement to be a very rare bit of honesty. That would be the destruction of Israel? Really? That's what you're worried about? That Israel will become like France, Britain, the US, all awful Democratic republics representative of its citizens? This is what this is all about, the bombing, the oppression, the jailings, the years and years of war and killing. All this, so that Israelis won't have to share the country with non-Jews. Whoa. Quite an admission.
After you've made a statement like that, there's hardly any refutation needed. But I will add that the moment Israel annexed the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza, the clock began running down on its exclusive Jewish state. Like it or not, it has been Israel's own actions that will eventually cause it to be your most feared entity--a single multi-national state.
Hamas also says it is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. Look, I'm no defender of the occupation, but let's not pretend that Israel is acting in a vacuum. Both sides want the most favorable settlement, both sides have strong factions which feel the way to that is through fighting. Just because Israel has a much stronger military does not mean that Hamas and the Palestinians aren't playing the same game. As I said, this is a war that has been going on for 80+ years. Continuing to point fingers just feeds into umbrage, rationalization and vengence. It's ironic that I'd say that after offering my defense of the current offensive, but as I said, I think there are some real positives that can come from this.
As for my reporting that Hamas is more willing to negotiate now, I get my news from Haaretz and Aljazeera; haaretz just posted this : http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1055510.html
This is just one. There have been other reports of a Damascus/Gaza split in Hamas (Damascus being hard-line and Gaza wanting to negotiate), and others that I can't find right now.
Another note: to the guys acting like Glenn is putting forward a "Jewish narrative" about this war, even as he takes Tom Friedman to task and defends the Palestinians, you guys do realize your idiocy provides ammo for hardline Zionist anti-peace elements, right? Right? You do realize how ridiculous and anti-Semitic what you're saying is, right? That a Jew can't defend the Palestinians? ...
You are Jewish Mr. Greenwald ? If Israel is wiped out, which is the goal of the Hamas and Hezbullah and backed by Iran, you know where you will end up ?
