Friedman and his butcher friends in Israel

Thanks for your article GG.

It seems so strange that for years we all condemned what the Nazis had done to the Jewish people. We called it genocide.

We still call it that. But, now, that defination of killing is very aptly applied to Israel and what it is doing to innocent civilians, children, women...

It is, indeed, strange that the Israelis have now become the new generation of the Nazis, the purveyors of the "Final Solution," butchering other people because they want to eliminate them.

"The Final Solution" is still alive and well and Israel is practicing it big time, gleefully supported by scumbags like Friedman, Golberg, et al.

The "Final Solution" is now euphemistically called: "Education of the Gaza population!"

The Israelis have now replaced the Nazis. Learned the fine points of the lessons as to how to eliminate others, and with the support of American politicians and our government, are accomplices of this new genocide.

The Israelis are committing crimes against humanity and they have now joined the likes of Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler...one can no longer view the Israelis in the same light as before. They are butchers now.

What a sorry ending. A sad moment for a people one had always held in high esteem.

Paul Daniel Ash makes a vital point on the strong possibility that people in the Gaza Ghetto who did not support Hamas

will now do so as they've seen the contempt and inhuamity of the Israelis towards them. I base this on what happened in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1998. The IRA was moribund in Northern Ireland for decades and nobody there was living in the atrocious conditions of the Gaza Ghetto. There were discontents which I'm not enumerating and there were many anomolies which led to sporadic gunfire. When the British Army was brought in to control the situation, some of the soldiers went berserk so that the nationalist community started to taunt the members of families associated with rebellion years earlier. One piece of graffiti read "IRA = I ran away". The British blunders and over-reaction caused people who felt besieged to call on a revolutionary organisation to protect them, an organisation that would fight for them.

Although the situations are dissimilar in many ways, there's no doubt that the British Army, unwittingly, gave the IRA the kiss-of-life and many a boy who wanted to prove his manhood joined during the 70s and 80s. Not only is Israel's assault on the Palestinians wicked, it's also foolish and short-sighted.

To think that most Gazans will look at Israel's attacks and place primary blame on Hamas is ridiculous.

Oh really? Seems to be holding Hezbollah at bay for the time being. We'll see if the Gazans are as intelligent. I'm not hopeful.

@grackle

Still, it doesn't seem appropriate that Israel should simply ignore , as some have suggested, the flights of deadly rockets into its lands.

1) Who is "some"

2) would you describe a Quassam rocket, it's construction, guidance and payload, and how does it rate in the "deadly" department?

3) Do you think Hamas will fit a Quassam rocket with a nuclear warhead this year?

To all those who are saying "if they were smart, the people of Gaza would do x"

If Gazans were to comply with all of Israels demands, what could they reasonably expect to happen?

The conflict would disappear from news headlines and Israelis would continue to oppress the Palestinians, knowing that there is nothing anybody can or wants to do about it. This is exactly what happens in periods of relative calm. Israel bows to its right-wing factions and doesn't do enough to discourage the settlers. Knowing that they have nothing to fear from the international community they decline signing any peace treaty that gives Palestinians the slightest concessions.

So the reason Palestinians will never agree to all of Israel's demands is that they know their situation will not improve significantly. Whenever they try to establish working societal institutions with some foreign help, Israelis will point to "terrorist" groups who happen also to benefit from this (there is always a way to link people who "want to destroy Israel", who will always be around, to societal institutions).

So whether it's Hamas or Fatah or just the general sense among the Palestinian population. They have little to lose, but they also see very little to gain. They are literally hopeless. The only thing that can change any of this would be real international pressure on Israel.

I thought the pictures that Ramon Creager posted were a good example of WP. What was interesting, is that they appeared to have originated from an aircraft, rather than from an artillery marking round which would have shown a spray 45 degrees away from the detonation, rather than the spray shown, which is directly downward. These rounds were airbursts and show a deliberate attempt to enhance the effect to the targets on the ground.

Any military analyst would know this difference, and should pronounce them for what they are. The silence from our dutiful media is criminal.

There's been much discussion about why what Israel has done is wrong, but little about what Israel actually should have done, instead.

You make a good point. And it should be noted that Israeli lives are threatened, and that it too has been subjected to terrorism. Both sides have been subjected to terrorism.

as to what should be done--here's a scenario. Let's say that through a series of international decisions made in europe and military incursions in North America, the United States took possession of Alberta, Canada, with its rich oil sands. US military occupied the province, and Americans began establishing towns there, fortified ones, and also began exploiting the oil riches.

In response, Albertans began to violently resist the US presence in their province, including small acts of violence in the lower 48.

What should the US do to halt the violence being experienced by US citizens?

Palestinians know that Israel doesn't target civilians, Greenwald chooses not to

I guess today is Greenwald's day for anti-Israel invective. I don't seem to remember Greenwald lamenting for the health of Israeli children who have had their schools bombed by thousands of rockets over the past year. I must have missed it.

Contrary to Greenwald's invective, Israel does not target civilians. I know this because Gaza civilians go to the roofs of their buildings to prevent Israeli bombings. They are sent up there by Hamas to keep Israeli jets from bombing their weapons stockpiles. Over 80% of the missions have been called off due to the presence of civilians. The Palestinians bet their lives that the Israelis will try to avoid civilian casualties. They know it, but Mr. Greenwald hasn't figured it out.
