Criticisms, political pressure and Barack Obama

The president-elect's advisors respond to the firestorm created by Sunday's remarks on Guantanamo, illustrating the value of criticizing Obama when he deserves it.

@GlennGreenwald

Thanks for the comment re: Be-bop-o. I read some of his comments and they seemed downright covert mindf--k. He was throwing about faustian allusions and god knows what. He was not another handle for Good Celery whose allusions were kindly and not so macabre.

I don't visit the blog too often. If I become a problem, please tell me so and I will simply read and not post.

Rep. John Conyers

The incoming Obama administration should launch a criminal investigation of Bush administration officials to see whether they broke the law in the name of national security, a House Democratic report said Tuesday.

Conyers already has introduced legislation to form the commission.

tl dr re:wobegonne

@One of Glenn's Moms

Yeah, that Holder piece was exactly the genteel, understanding, and forgiving GG we all know and love. Let's go to the transcript, shall we?--wobegonne

Tl dr depends a lot on the introduction. I'll dive in and read long comment posts, and have done so time and again. But take a look at the introduction, the first paragraph of wobegonne's "essay".

Like a shitty baseball pitcher who has fallen in love with his curve-ball -- no matter how many times the catcher has given him a signal for anything but -- he throws his lousy curve-ball. Which in wobegonnes case consists of his made up statement about "Glenn's Mom's". Whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean is a mystery to most all, I am sure.

Then wobegonne just fills space with cliche after cliche for the remainder of the paragraph. Take a read. Tell me if you haven't heard/read every sentence in that paragraph a thousand times before.

Frankly, it's horrible writing and so... "tl dr" is the result.

"downright covert mindf--k"

Please let's not have it be score-settling time for those who always disliked Art.

Despite whatever went down recently with his dispute with Glenn, for years he was, to me, a fucking Oracle at Delphi. Stercus accidit, as it often will, but I hope he finds a home at Chris Floyd's place.

For the haters, a warning: the mind you fuck may be your own.

Selah.

I will note, that according to bystander (to whom I offered not thanks, but instead the sincerest form of flattery) it needs a semi-colon.

Re: Conyers

Well, la de da.

I know we shouldn't be cynical, brand new dawn and all that, but damn, Conyers has been more than a little disappointing, wouldn't you say?

Wasn't there something about subpoenas and much huffery and much puffery and strongly worded letters?

Why yes, yes there was:

The upshot of which was?

@Kitt

I can't get over the amount of pure personal poison they direct at Glenn. It's astounding. And then two posts later "Waaah, why won't anybody have a civil conversation?!?"

It's better than daytime TV!

@ehillesum

As you are concerned about "liberals" wanting to let mentally ill people out on the streets (which isn't true - we want them to get appropriate treatment), you may be interested in the story of one Ed Kemper. Ole' Ed shot and killed his grandparents when he was 14 or so, and was committed to a state mental hospital. When he was about 21 or so, the Governor of his state decided that one way to reduce the size of state government was to reduce funding for state hospitals, resulting in the release of a bunch of persons. Ole' Ed, who had grown to be 6'10" tall by that time, was released, and proceeded to murder 10 women, the final being his mother.

The State? California. The Governor? Republican hero Ronald Reagan.

Bamage

it needs a semi-colon.

-- bamage

I know. I got lazy or sloppy. I like semi-colons. They're cool. Except I'm hardly ever sure where to correctly use them. Strunk and White tried to help me but I was too busy doing something 'more important' than listening to the masters.

Couldn't agree more with Glenn's article.

Well, actually, I could and should ... by getting much more involved in political matters, thus more actively holding our politicians' feet to the fire in the way Glenn is advocating.

Considering what the Machiavellian forces aligned against justice have proven themselves capable and willing to do in the past, I'm not at all surprised that Obama may hesitate in saying and doing what he knows is humane, just, legal, and morally correct in any particular instance. Assuming he isn't actually a fake, I wouldn't be surprised if he's been (or will be) visited secretly and had his entire family threatened. Who among us could stand up against such heinous evil if so confronted and threatened?

Our only hope is that, if a high enough % of the populace voices their dissent loudly enough, the darkest forces just may be frightened enough to back off. And, as Glenn continuously states so eloquently, such pressure for justice must be maintained FOREVER.

I just received, in the mail from The Salon Media Group, a copy of GG's "How Would A Patriot Act?" Don't know why, but it's a nice surprise!

-- avelna2001

Don't worry about it. You got the copy that was earmarked for wbgonne.

He won't be needing it. He's already informed enough.

I wouldn't know about what Obama has or will be threatened with, but the founders were point blank told they would be hanged if they persisted. Nonetheless -- they persisted.
