I take your point, and I really don't mean to make light of a serious issue. Making demands of our elected officials in order to produce correct action is something that is all of our responsibility. But I am willing to give Obama the ebenfit of the doubt. Others may not, but that's where I fall.
More precisely, Reid et al have been running their own little antidemocratic machine inside their party for years, and now inside Congress for two years. They've been VERY successful at this. WHO needs leadership when you control the leadership?

Reid must GO. He's beyond redemption and he's vunerable. At a minimum, he must be replaced as Majority Leader because he's failed miserably to lead the Senate Majority.

It's currently in 21st place and needs to get to 10th place in order to be presented to Obama at his inauguration. By the way, how in hell do you get a live or "hot" link embedded in a comment? I have never figured out how to do so.
What some of you appear to be discussing sounds something like violent radicalization (an extremist belief system for facilitating ideologically based violence to advance political, religious, or social change) or homegrown terrorism (violence by a group or individual within the United States to coerce the U.S. government, the civilian population, or a segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives).

Their appearance will provide jackson lots of cover from a terrible record on toxic site cleanup in NJ - and the fact that a Park Ranger under Jackson shot and killed an Ramapough for riding an ATV on state parkland.
Then there is the US Supreme Court "Massachusetts v. US" global warming case - maybe the lawyers here could expose how Jackson has failed to regulate in NJ, which amounts to the same Bush policy denounced by all.

If this really describes how you approach political issues, then you are a useless participant in the political process, and a worthless voter. You are that class of political animal we may term Homo consumerus and who dominates the American electorate and is most directly responsible for the last 28 years of our history.
Do you think you can return the republic/economy/global order/planet after you have bought and paid for it, and you find out it's broken? Do you think you can walk into some government office and say, "Uh, I ordered a progressive president, but I got another kind. I want a refund."?

Why the scorn? In this case, the critics were correct, and helped move Obama in a direction we all think is the right one.
This conflation of criticism with "outrage" and "jumping up and down" is kinda tiresome, frankly. It seems like it really offends you personally to hear people criticize Obama, and I'm curious why that is.
I can't decide whether I'm pleased or disgusted by this. Obviously pleased in part because it's a step in the right direction for Obama. But the very idea that a person has so few personal convictions that he's swayed dramatically by political pressure, isn't a person to be admired.
Glenn's absolutely right that we need to continue to put pressure on Obama when he even hints at doing the wrong thing or else the anti-civil liberties, war loving, torture endorcing advocates will indeed win. Again.
