Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Obama v. the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran Last year, the NIE famously concluded with "high confidence" that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Why did Obama say yesterday that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons?
The letters thread is now closed.
  • The Iranians and Islamic extremist terrorists have great publicists.

President Bush just finished his last press conference and already one prediction he made has come true with regards as to how Obama will be treated by the press.Maybe, just maybe as he has gotten more and more of the security briefings the full picture has come into view for him better. The spin is already being spun by people like Muhammed Saddam el Greenwald.Iran wants peace,Iran loves Jews, there is no connection between them and Hamas if we just wear tie-dye tee shirts and sing Grateful dead songs and give the Islamofacist the peace sign we can all get together for a big world wide Woodstock and save the world !!!.It is us the big Satan that brought all this hate and war on ourselves,if we just repent and beg for mercy and give them everything they want oh what a wonderful world this could be.The truth is they want to kill us,all of us.Whether they have nuclear weapons or working on them doesn't matter we need to act with caution and not underestimate the threat. This threat is real ask any of the relatives of 9/11 victims.Safety is job one,to act like Jimmy Carter would be as big a mistake today as it was in 1979.Still I am impressed by the skill of the Iranians to sway public opinion away from the truth and thier true goals. They can rile up a mob as well as Hitler and get journalist like el Greenwald knowingly or unknowingly to do this bidding.

Yeah, that excuse/explanation is going to be hard to top. Pretty early in the thread for that to happen.

Settle down, dude. I wrote that this *is the only explanation I could think of*.

Either Obama is just another cowardly Democrat or he is playing a different game. Hell, the guy's been in the Senate long enough to know the Reid and Pelosi don't have his back if he goes all lefty on them. He also knows the Village is just waiting with knives sharpened for any evidence that he's going to repudiate their construct of "America is a center-right country".

Look at what Obama has accomplished in the past year. He's not even in office yet. Cut him some freakin' slack, huh? Hell, Democrats are so programmed for disapointment and defeat that we can't even consider that the man shares most of our values and also knows that it will take considerable time and skill to implement these changes.

As for me, I gave up on the Democratic Party last year and registered as a Green, but I still have one small glimmer of hope that Obama can change the party and the country given time. If he turns out to be just another clever power hungry politician, we're sunk.

  • God Belss America!

Can't Salon just ban certain ip addresses?

  • As long as you're at it, Glenn

Feel free to delete my outburst.

And God "Belss" you too, Master Greenwald.

    Just a friendly hint.

It would be a hell of a lot easier to read your stuff if you used spaces after periods and through in a paragraph or two when warranted.

Oh!, try using some capital letters when starting sentences or otherwise warranted.

Frankly, I took the time to read what you scrawled and found it to be complete bullshit, but I can handle bullshit if it's easier to read. Your's, I won't bother with anymore if you make me work to read it.

  • @ libertyaintfree

Your blind, Orwellian nationalism can't convince me, especially after decades - centuries! - of lies from ALL "leaders" all over the world.

Your screen name is telling, btw.

Can't Salon just ban certain ip addresses?

Making that happen is now my number one priority -- I expect this ability will be in place very shortly. It will improve things dramatically.

"if he cannot be convicted in regular court due to abuses that Bush officials committed, we should just let him go? And THAT is a fair solution for the people of this country? Is that what you're really saying?"

    -- Jestaplero

This reminds of the argument Donald Rumsfeld made a few years ago about the Abu Ghraib images being released:

"I mean, I looked at (the images) last night, and they're hard to believe.... photos that depict incidents of physical violence towards prisoners, acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane .... If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

We can't trust people we've tortued to act lawfully. That's quite an argument.

  • ya know what the Catch22 is in all of this with Iran?

They've only legitimized Irans' right to HAVE a nuclear weapon..by attacking them first..

Other countries around the region will begin the backroom technology stealing-and cut off business with US for munitions- having caught on to their game of oneupsmanship.

Guess Israel will go into the spy biz (Oh wait they already have-Pollard, Franklin...hmmmnever hear about those case do we? hmm)-or the munitions biz- as they try to take their secrets to China or other countries to make them cheaper and eliminate a large middleman from thier US-bought(not made) weaponry.

World economy tanks...as fears of a new war erupt..in an already shaky economy...

Many isolated fringe extreme groups of Arabs will join together to fight..merging after the still very recent anger over brutal Palestianian killings.

The world will see the imperialism, warmongering of Israel for what it is-without diplomacy...and will boycott and severely hurt thier tourism industry/economy.....

ours too...in an economy that does not need more $$ taken out..

O I'd suggest you think about these things..cause 2 wars, a sucky economy, the bailout....attacking Iran is not really high on anyones' list here in the US..

By the way, are you aware that every day in this country, criminal convictions go up on appeal, and appellate review courts find that while Constitutional violations occured, the remaining evidence of guilt was compelling enough that the appeals courts decide to leave the convictions undisturbed?

Were you aware that THAT is the law of the land, that Consitutional defects are not an automatic get-out-of-jail-free card?

I think the discussion was based on the assumption that the constitutional violations are so severe in these cases that conviction will not result in a normal proper US court of law. Otherwise, there is nothing to talk about, is there?

So, what are you trying to accomplish with those two paragraphs above? My impression is that you are attacking my ideas by misrepresenting what I have written.
