Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
Obama v. the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran Last year, the NIE famously concluded with "high confidence" that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Why did Obama say yesterday that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons?

Reagan did not say it, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said it. He was a Justice in the Supreme Court of the United States from 1902-1932.

"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins."

Also, Al gore never claimed he invented the internet.

I think you need to go to the library, and get away from right-wing websites for a while.

  • libertaintfree, you can twist and turn as much as you like, with your sly liitle digs. Who exactly ami

supposed to hate and for what reason? Come on, caugh it up. Why would I, neither Palestinian nor Israelie, feel that the slaughter of over a hundred children in the Gaza Ghetto in 19 days is unbearably cruel. I don't know whether you're slow on the uptake or just pretending. Uncle Sam is Zionist Israel's sugar daddy and not yours personally as an American. That's the puzzle really. You are living far away from what could be a fatal conflagration in the Middle East and you appear to support the U.S. getting involved, if not precipitating this calamity. You'd better decide where your loyalties are because if Sugar Daddy gives Israel what it wants, there are people on this scarred earth who might decide to give Sugar Daddy, Uncle Sam, a severe spanking and not one that Sugar Daddy would enjoy.

  • @libertyaintfree, oh sorry,

I'm a wild, impetuous creature and should have written "cough it up" instead of misspelling the verb. Anyway, go ahead and tell me who I hate and a reason for it. Yes, cough it up; it will do you good.

"It seems absurdly generalized, it seems irrational, it seems frothingly emotional, to you, for the simple reason that you (and I) have been enculturated to believe that any criticism of Judaism is anti-Semitism."

Please, dude. My father is a Palestinian. I've heard more 'anti-semitism' than you ever will. I don't use the word anti-semitic if I can help it. Its an absurd term at every level. I also make a distinction between Judaism and Israel, though sometimes that distinction is not operative.

This is the bottom line. I read a few of your posts early on. They did make absurd generalizations. I've stopped reading, and I feel bit burnt that I responded to you in the beginning without fully knowing your stand.

You are asking me, as a Palestinian, to agree with you that our media is owned by Jews. I've told you that even if it were true, it would not explain much about why the US policy is a virtual mirror of Israel's. Find someone else's well to poison. That kind of shit is exactly why the right wing is so effective in silencing our discourse. You can't imagine the enormous damage you do to Palestine when you seed what would normally be effective discourse with such immature arguments.

  • @Steele The First and MaureenOdonnell

Steele, whether Reagan quoted Holmes or not he spoke this line in a speech around 1975 which is where I remember it from. You should look it up his speeches are enlightening.I am of French Canadian descent with native american blood so I am maybe not the rah rah american patriot you assume.Maybe you can help me to understand how someone can give all in this world for the glory in the next yet fight over things like land in this world at the expense of thier own children.Nobody owns the sun or the universe and maybe this lack of understanding contributed in my ancestors selling Manhattan for trinkets. If what matters is beyond this life and possesion is evil why the zeal to obtain?I do not understand these contradictions. There is enough for all to coexist and recognition of this seems essential to me.We cannot undo the past,we can learn from it and move forward in peace or we can let hate or ideology ruin us all. What other choices do we have?

  • @Glenn

But what I'm asking you is how can it be justified that we could do it for past cases but not future cases? For someone who believes now that it's more important to detain Terrorists than to abide by the prohibition against using torture-obtained evidence, why would future cases produce a different rationale?

Glenn, you couldn't have been any clearer. I don't know why this is such a difficult point to understand.

    Precedent:

    • any act, decision, or case that serves as a guide or justification for subsequent situations.

...and I'm probably not the first person to point this out, but does anyone else find it ironic that despite how oft repeated the beltway axiom that "we need to look forward as opposed to looking backwards" is, it doesn't seem to apply to detainees against whom there does not seem to be any "untainted" actionable evidence, yet it does apply to our political leaders against whom all actionable evidence (and indeed action) is being suppressed.

What's more, the only reason said taint exists is because of the malfeasance of the Bush Administration. The same malfeasance that our political elite is so unwilling to prosecute or even investigate.

I guess a 1-tier system of justice is too much to ask for.

Okay, Omooex, (you still haven't told me what your handle means or how to pronounce it).

"That kind of shit is exactly why the right wing is so effective in silencing our discourse. You can't imagine the enormous damage you do to Palestine when you seed what would normally be effective discourse with such immature arguments."

First of all, our discourse is silenced because Democrats and Lefties are pussies.

Second of all, it is not an immature argument. It is an argument based on evidence and facts.

    To wit:

"Jewish and Christian Zionist Control of our Media and Government"

    http://www.springhillatcanfield.com/media.html

Don't tell me if these people were all names al-something and were Muslims and Arabs, their wouldn't panic on the right-wing radio.

I am sorry if my discourse harms the cause of Palestinians. But isn't it a logical course of action to silence and denigrate that which exposes one's crimes? In other words, I must be saying something right, if it makes them so God-damned mad. Truth can never hurt Goodness. I posted an article written by a Jewish journalist of over 20 years who lives in Israel and who worked for the New York Times and he said the same thing! Did you even read it?
