Obama v. the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran

Last year, the NIE famously concluded with "high confidence" that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Why did Obama say yesterday that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons?

The letters thread is now closed.

Did you really think the O-pods would be any different than the neocons and their Texas Stooge?

This nonsense is just like the nonsense our Israel loving press has been coming up with about Iran supplying Hamas. I would have to say those were some pretty shitty supplies. If they had provided shoulder fired anti aircraft weapons, anti tank weapons or reasonabley accurate missles, the IDF would still be sitting on the Gaza border with soiled britches like in Lebanon in 06.

Steele the First

That just proves it. Right there. Judiasm is a religion of violence and hate. Judaism has no problem with killing innocent civilians. It's right there in black and white. Judaism is a religion of hate and the killing of innocents.

Yeah, that proves it, because on rabbi, speaking on one narrow issue, defines what "Judaism" is.

This is absoluitely appalling and disgusting.

You're right. It is. I haven't read your comments before and, having just done so for the first time, I'm glad I haven't.

@Steele the First

I suppose now might be a good time to remind you that the original Zionists were American evangelical Christians. They called their movement Reconstructionism originally, and its goal was to reconstruct the Holy Land in the Middle East to provide conditions for the Second Coming of God to the Earth as provided in Revelations. They were, in fact, the same evangelical Christians who ten years prior, were the driving force for the Abolitionist movement. They created the name Zionism as well, and pre-dated any Jewish drive for a state of Israel by decades.

So you see, Steele, it's really a Zionist plot to have the world taken over by Christians, who have this desire to run our Congress, our banks, and our foreign policy. It's a religion of hatred, you see, founded by a guy who called himself the Prince of Peace as a diversionary disinformation campaign to hide his true goals.

So This Is What People Mean When they Talk About the "Looney Left"

This is a perfect illustration why doctrinaire liberals like yourself have no credibility in the real world.

Before Obama made his comments about Guantanamo yesterday, I don't recall hearing many liberals or Democrats talking about how "complex" is the issue of closing Guantanamo.

Anyone with any sense knew this was a complicated matter. Let's start with this: Just where are these prisoners supposed to go?

So what's the justification for Obama's inflammatory and obviously consequential (though seemingly baseless) claim on national television that the Iranians "are pursuing a nuclear weapon that could potentially trigger a nuclear arms race" when the consensus of American intelligence agencies is that they are not doing so?

You can't be serious. Just what do you think Iran is doing?

I'm talking out of my butt here, but I'm willing to wager that if you kept it to 1 maybe 2 comments per DAY for a while, week or two maybe, Glenn might be willing to remove you from exile.

GG if this is too O/T or too most definitely not the time/place for this comment, please get rid of it.

It is clear to me that Obama will not seek to follow anyone's saccharine hopes for mindlessly extending olive branches of peace where it is not appropriate. While it is true that the overall assessment of intelligence reports is that Iran is not currently working to develop nuclear weapons, the report also states that it is considered likely that they will resume this task in the future, and that the reason they stopped developing said weapons (bearing in mind that it is a fact that they had been doing this) was international pressure. My conclusion is that they are not to be trusted.

Iran is not suitable for the naive partnership endorsed by ondellette - they hang gay kids, for God's sake! Why must so many people provide apologies for them and paint the West as the enemy? I for one am truly glad to see signs that Obama does not follow the foolish doctrines of the blogging left - no doubt he, like others in government, see that they need to use great caution with many of our neighbors in the world, in particular the Islamic nations, if they are to provide safety for our country and Western culture.

Shooter, why do you hate America?

Carter & Stuff

"You're right. It is. I haven't read your comments before and, having just done so for the first time, I'm glad I haven't."

You should - you might learn something. However, I won't be too hard on you. I know you can't write the truth about the Zionist control of America, because if you did, you would never work as a journalist again, at least not for a respectable institution.

By Zionist, I mean one who believes Israel has a right to exist at the expense of all others, and puts Israel's interests equal to, or higher than, the interests of the United States. But never, ever below, even if it is to the detriment of the United States.

And yes, Jimmy Carter was banned from the Democratic National Convention because of his fairminded views on Israel, and millions of Americans heard him called an anti-Semite day in and day out for months on national TV. So, yes, he was destroyed. Because Zionists in America think their Israeli agenda is above and beyond America's, and they will even go so far as to hijack a Presidential Convention for their own purposes.

Why indeed? That is a very good question!

Obama is very intelligent and informed. Obama probably believes in the NIE -- just as most informed people on that subject would. But, and this is controversial I know, he is under the sway of AIPAC, the Israel firsters on his staff, in his circle, and of course in the Congress and the Senate. Israel has, for a lot of reasons, has come to the consensus that Iran does indeed pose a threat to them -- if not existential -- as some truly believe, then certainly in the form of aid and encouragement to Hamas, Hezbollah and Syria.

The military, government and to a fair degree, public consensus in Israel, is that a preemptive attack on Iran would be "good for Israel". To the extent that Obama actually believes in the rather silly idea that Iran poses an existential threat to Israel, he is either a fool or a tool. He is not a fool.

Whatever the facts of the matter, strategic thinkers know that the MAD doctrine of mutual assured destruction is always in effect. Iran knows very well that it cannot attack Israel with nuclear weapons; that this would be national suicide. Israeli response aside, they would be vaporized immediately by America, if not others. Contrary to the nonsense about shaheeds and Palestinians using babies as human shields, the Iranians love their children and their own lives just as much as we do. There will be no Iranian nuclear strike on Israel. It is a ridiculous stupid idea on many many levels.

The best possible face I can put on this is that Obama is maintaining this intransigent, irrational, and contrary-to-the-facts position simply as a bargaining chip, if and when he "talks" to the Iranians.
