America then and now It's now commonplace for our political and media elites to explicitly renounce the principles of justice which the U.S. long led the world in advocating.

  • Pin A Label On It!

... Why? Not because what they did was legal or justified, but because "these people did what they did under orders and with patriotism."

All true and correct, but a constitutional scholar ought to put a name to the principle: Sovereign Immunity.

This concept, derived from the "Divine Right of Kings", holds that any and all official government conduct is and ought to be free from any civil or criminal prosecution. If it's authorized by a government executive, it's legal.

Of course, this principle isn't mentioned in the Constitution, nor any U.S. law, but has been upheld by the Supreme Court as an accepted provision of British Common Law. It's the basis for "executive privilege" and "color of law immunity."

It is the "foot in the door" for evading "equal treatment under the law" for any act of any government official.

Pinning a label on the idea is important, to focus attention on a perverse and pervasive corruption of the rule of law. It is the key to modern dictatorship and tyranny.

  • Apology

Glenn and readers, I apologize for using that kind of tone in my writing. I am being hypocritical and will try to live up to my own beliefs better in the future.

  • re: Go to HELL! Congress; You don't represent me, international laws or human decency

Say it ain't so. Say it ain't so.

So will all the Zionists who called most of us here "anti-Semites" for noticing the power of "The Lobby" now come back and apologize?

  • Well spoken RMP

from the article you linked: "by reaffirming Israel's inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza, as well as our support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process"

    Orwell sends his regards.

  • Israel's "inalienable right"!

Whew! That's not just staunch support for Israel, it's unequivocal.

Hmmmm...I wonder whether this means the egg has the inalienable right to stop the chicken from sitting on it.

  • Oh!, Jebbie

Although the post was apparently deleted, I disagree.

That single post demonstrated perfectly the complete and total lack of legitimate argument that many, if not all, of our beloved trolls and other rightwing shills have in their support of the Bush/Cheney reign of terror on the world.

Except that it also accused someone of illegal behavior, might have brought the wrath of the FCC down on UT, and was just the kind of post that might attract a reprehensible and vile segment of the population to UT, not that UT doesn't already have some vile people, but you know what I mean.

  • @ Tommy . . . you have shown sufficient contrition and are forgiven . . .

Congress is a racket. I can count the decent principaled human beings in both chambers on my toes and fingers. Pelosi and Reid are the antithesis of "leadership".

Why do they hate America? Why do the hate American citizens? I think electoral targets for upcoming elections have been successfully lased. Hoyer, Pelosi, Reid, Harman, Rockefeller . . .

  • I apologize for the multiple posts...

...but I really must remark on the "cease fire" aspect of your Senate's Resolution. It seems that the U.S. feels that Israel really oughtn't to agree to cease killing the people in Gaza unless and until they can be sure they can stop killing them for a really long time.

  • Some eedjit wrote:

[reznit eedjit Sh**ter]: So killing twenty Jews by rocket is OK, but not twenty Arabs by interrogation?

Make you a deal, Sh**ter. You find the blog that has said that, and we'll applaud your going over there to tell them they're full'o'it.

    Fair 'nuff?

Don't let the door slam your a$$ on the way out.

    Cheers,

P.S. to Glenn: Is this verging on "obsessive"/"repeatedly defamatory" behaviour worthy of simply trashing? At what point do we say, "You've restated your false and defamatory claims twenty times. Three generations of imbecile comments is enough. We're sterilizing you..."?

  • Ethics Pro

I'm pretty sure that it was an Electro sock puppet post. In which case the content alone is one reason for the deletion but add to that the banned scum RealName/ElectroRobot being the "author", there would be no slack for deleting the post. So, I'm with you. Jebbie is full of used cat litter in this instance.

  • The MSM...

The main stream media in this country aren't 'journalists', they are 'urinalists'.

Pissing on what's left of democracy as they pour fuel to the embers.

Treasonous acts for what I remember of the 'old American Century'.

So much for the Bushies bring 'accountability' and 'adults' to the White House. It's the 'Blight House' and it's going to take more than a legion of constitutional realists and cleaners to remove the stench and the stain...

Join me in calling today's 'journalism' what it is: Urinalism!

  • Glenn

You're more than welcome to use the title in your article. Israel has pissed me off even more than Bush invading Iraq and that is saying something!

  • @ tommy1733

    GlennGreenwald [to reznit eedjit Sh**ter]:

Are you capable of opening your mouth and making an argument without blatantly lying?<;blockquote>

Objection - counsel is badgering the witness again.

    Typo. That's "witnessing the badger...."

    Cheers,

    What are your beliefs?

A quick read of your previous posts seems to indicate a rather biased view of this Blog's owner, his readership, and of Israel's current (and past) despicable actions relative to the Palestinians.

Do you support the legitimate government of the occupied territories right to govern?

Do you support the stated goal of Israel to overthrow the legitimate, duly elected government of Gaza?

Do you believe Israel's claim that their strikes are made using only "precision guided" weapons when it appears that most of the IDF's casualties are "blue on blue" in nature?

Do you really believe that if Glenn Greenwald said the sun came up in the west that "his followers" would agree with him?

  • Kitt

I'm pretty sure that it was an Electro sock puppet post.

    Agreed.

Shouldn't there be a limit to the number of sock puppets one user can have? You would think the techies would have figured this one out by now.

  • Pinky

Two pissing posts in a row. I wonder what Mooser would say.
