    The Past is Future

    Just to pile on--

    Israel is attacking Hamas under the very explicitly stated logic that Hamas must be punished for past and present actions, in order to prevent bad future actions. Israel is making a direct logical and functional linkage between past and future.

    99.9 percent of the US government sees that argument and agrees with it.

    But the same logic seems invisible to the US government when applied to crimes of torture and murder by the powerful.
