Both parties cheerlead still more loudly for Israel's war

As the body count in Gaza piles up, the U.S. Congress acts overwhelmingly to insinuate itself into the war with blind support for Israel.

Chris Sinnard

So 5 went against it? I knew that Ron Paul would vote that way, and I am glad to hear we have 4 others that would put America's interests ahead of a genocidal foreign country's interests.

@Lotus Foot

It seems you grew up in a home, like mine, where observant Jews were ridiculed and the K word was much in vogue

I most certainly, certainly did not, and I'll thank you not to make up stories about my family. I know I'm fair game, that's just a condition of posting, but I'll thank you to leave my deceased parents alone. I haven't mentioned yours, thank you.

Holy fucking mackerel!

Observant Jews were never, never ridiculed by anyone in our house. Most of our relatives were Orthodox or Orthodox/Conservative and although we were Reform, many pains were taken to expose us to this other aspect of Judaism.

If observant Jews were ridiculed in your home, well, too bad for you. Anti-semitism is an ugly thing, I'm sorry you were exposed to it.

James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, said the Israeli lobby is often seen as the force behind pro-Israel votes, but he thinks it is not that simple.

Some Americans "don't have a clue" about the Palestinians' history, he said.

Stop the Presses! Israelis and Palestinians are Killing each other -- Again!

How it pains all right-thinking people to hear Israel accused of "indiscriminate" killings. Bombs don't know who is a member of Hamas and who isn't, after all, and many people feel that Israel is dropping way too many bombs. If only Israel used smaller bombs, or used them in such a way that only Hamas fighters would die. If only Israel had stopped after dropping just a few bombs. If only Israel's bombs were loaded with diplomats willing to talk to Hamas. We all know it is beastly of Israel to decide to kill people, and worse still if it really is preventing medical help from reaching people who need it. Israel can do better, but lacks all the wisdom of its American critics, and perhaps its government is trying to get its atrocities in before Bush leaves office. Oh, if only Israel could be more objective about its losses, and if only Hamas hadn't fired rockets into Israel. Hamas is getting its martyrs (see today's Times), and Israel is like an elephant raging in a cloud of wasps. An elephant with an enormous arse-nal.

the only Republican

I see Dr. Paul was the only Republican to vote against the measure. I often wonder why he does not just declare himself an independent. After all, he seldom is in agreement with either party --- or their bipartisan wars.

@ Lotus Feet, Moshe Dayan, Mensch

You said Moshe Dayan was a real mensch. Yes, he was.

In a 1976 interview by Israeli journalist Rami Tal, Dayan claimed that 80 percent of the cross-border clashes between Israel and Syria in the years before the war were a result of Israeli provocation. He said, "I made a mistake in allowing the [Israeli] conquest of the Golan Heights. As defense minister I should have stopped it because the Syrians were not threatening us at the time.

In one recollection, having seen rabbis flocking on the Temple Mount shortly after Jerusalem was captured in 1967, he asked "what is this? Vatican?" Dayan later ordered the Israeli flag removed from the Dome of the Rock, and gave administrative control of the Temple Mount over to the Waqf, a Muslim council.

Where are his progeny?

and perhaps its government is trying to get its atrocities in before Bush leaves office.

There are also elections coming up in Israel, and the lefties, losing in the polls, need to make themselves look tough. Like I said earlier, according to the polls a few days ago they picked up 5 or 6 seats for every 80 Palestinians killed. Something like that.

heru-ur

I think it has something to do with his belief that he is the only real Republican in the Republican Party, and isn't some strain of big government authoritarian

The funniest thing about Lotus Feet

Is that he can't imagine how a person could develop their OWN ethical and political thinking as ADULTS. He keeps wanting to project his infantile ethical process--I am x, so I should believe y, that's what mommy told me--on all Jewish people he comes into contact with. Its never occured to him that even Jews have free will.

Lotus Feet

I'm actually starting to think that you're not Jewish, but an anti-semite getting his rocks off on secretly insulting the intelligence of Jewish people.

Friday, January 9, 2009 03:14 PM

Zionism...

I have absolutely no interest in debating Zionism. You brought it up, claiming that being anti-Zionist was being anti-semitic.

You are squirreling so wildly now, you don't even know what you're writing.

@Chris

I have no stomach for violence. I can't be persuaded that innocent people must die. The death of a single child is an atrocity. Humans are an obscene race, to justify murder so readily. And to kill for political gain? I think I'll go play some music now, there is nothing to be gained from considering all this evil.

Friday, January 9, 2009 03:15 PM

the only real Republican

Yes, I am sure you are correct.

But would it not be something if there were no parties at all? What if people had to vote for the real candidate and not for the party that the candidate belonged to?

What if the winer in the presidential election became president and the second place vote getter became vice president as in the early days?

What if politicians promised to hold the interests of the people in their own districts above all other considerations?

What if we had 525 Ron Pauls? What if the US told the rest of the world to look after themselves as we had all we could handle right here?
