Both parties cheerlead still more loudly for Israel's war

As the body count in Gaza piles up, the U.S. Congress acts overwhelmingly to insinuate itself into the war with blind support for Israel.

The letters thread is now closed.

Nice try Sparafucilli

But the first tip off that the website is one hundred percent bullshit, is the photo slide show which shows off the now very discredited image of a muslim woman being buried alive. Here is the link to that, from a source I'm sure you would find palatable:

and from a more palatable source for propagandists.

Mustafa Barghouti has run for president twice in the Occupied Territories and run a very vocal campaign against Fatah power abuses. The man can be critiqued of course, but I see no purpose in demonizing someone who is actually doing the things that the west is always crying out for. Barghouti ran for president in 2004 against Abbas in 2005, and garnered 20% of the vote even though he was not allowed by Israel to travel to Gaza or many parts of the West Bank. If the US had really been interested in democratic change in the territories it would have backed the well-known secular doctor instead of the Arafat crony. Barghouti would have easily won if he'd been given the same kind of aid and support from Israel and the US that Abbas had been given.

Palestra

"As usual, the discussion of the Arab-Israeli dispute on this board breaks down to a chorus of rants by those who simply see Israel as illegitimate and must be destroyed."

As usual, the people who make this claim never have provide any evidence of it.

The tide of public opinion is turning

Thanks to the atrocious behavior of Israel and to the brave journalists like Glen

I can see and feel public opinion changing here in the US. I believe there is much more sympathy for the Palestinian cause then ever before.

There have been tens of thousands of people demonstrating across the country since the Gaza massacre started and the blogosphere has been electric with anger and outrage at it.

Remember there will be a hopefully huge demonstration in Washington and other parts of the country tomorrow (saturday). Everyone who can make it should go.

@ LondonLad (and I promise this is the ONLY comment I'll make on this)

Right, lets put that through Newton.

"If an object (top of the tower) falling under gravity gathers mass (floors) as it falls it will loose downward velocity as it does so. And the downward velocity the object (top of the tower) looses will be in direct proportion to the amount of mass (floors) that it gathers as it falls."

Not exactly. If the force (or "inertia") of the mass encountered is less that the force of gravity, no diminution of velocity will occur. No to mention that gravity is a pervasive force also exerted on the lower floors, countering any inertia they have to some degree or another.

This law is inviolate. Yet the collapse was in no way impeded by the floors below. From this we are OBLIGED to recognise (we have no choice) that other forces must therefore have been in play.

What, space aliens? A chronosynclastic infundibulum? What?

Hate to say it, but your pet "explosives" theory suffers from the exact same physical constraints. That is to say, if the above is a "problem" for the conventional view [which I contest], you haven't provided anything (absent invaders from Betelgeuse) anything that fixes the "problem".

Now I'm no Chomsky, but even I can see that.

Now give it a rest. Please.

Cheers,

For Israel rationalizers who are not afraid to face pictures and reporting free of Israeli/AIPAC influence

Chris Sinnard told us yesterday about LiveStation which provides free TV downloads to watch the horrors going as reported by Al Jazeera TV.

http://www.antiwar.com/blog/2009/01/07/tv-from-around-the-world-on-your-pc/

Here’s an article that explains more about Al Jazeera coverage:

What You'd Know About Israel If You Watched Al Jazeera TV

By Shane Bauer, New America Media. Posted on AlterNet January 9, 2009. (see sig)

DAMASCUS, Syria -- Throughout the 11 days of Israel's pummeling of Gaza, live coverage of the war hasn't made it into most American living rooms.

That's because Israel, America's staunch ally, isn't allowing journalists to enter Gaza while Al Jazeera, called anti-American and pro-terrorist by many in Washington, is the only network broadcasting live images from Gaza to the world.

The 350 reporters who descended on Israel when the conflict began are stuck at the border between Israel and Gaza. Israel says that opening border crossings to journalists would put their soldiers in danger, but many have accused them of trying to control the story. Instead of giving their viewers up-close pictorial evidence of what is occurring in Gaza, television networks have been restricted to showing their viewers plumes of smoke as they rise in the distance.

But Al Jazeera, the Qatari network that has previously undergone attacks and had its reporters arrested by the U.S. military, remains typically defiant. While other networks are increasingly severed from Gaza as phone lines are cut and 75 percent of the territory is without electricity, Al Jazeera is bringing its approximately 140 million English- and Arabic-speaking viewers live images of bombings, tanks rolling through Gaza's farmland, and interviews with civilians and aid workers inside Gaza city.

Like all of the networks, Al Jazeera gives constant hard-hitting interviews with politicians and analysts from Israel, the West Bank, and the rest of the Arab world. But while others can only balance pundits with more pundits, Al Jazeera has been taking the viewer to the scene to weigh the words of politicians against the reality on the ground.

Destruction of the State of Israel is not on the table, and is simply hateful rhetoric

Exactly. Just as "PalestraJon" puts it (bottom, page 39).

Some people and countries have an inalienable right to exist. Others...not so much.

To take a more neutral example (at least in the context of this discussion), consider Iraq. Hell, that country may not even survive its own liberation. No inalienable right to exist there.

But Israel is different.

Bullshit. Post the permalink to one (1) comment saying that.

Argue your side without lying, please.

PalestraJon

As usual, the discussion of the Arab-Israeli dispute on this board breaks down to a chorus of rants by those who simply see Israel as illegitimate and must be destroyed

As Omooex pointed out, it really is amazing how many people here who want to defend Israel's attack on Gaza -- PalestraJon, Shooter, Win Smith -- have to outright lie about what is being said by critics:

War critics claim it's perfectly OK to kill Israelis.

War critics don't want Israel to exist and want to see it destroyed.

War critics hate Jews.

It's exactly the same -- exactly -- as how those who advocated the attack on Iraq accused war critics of hating America, loving Saddam, being pro-rape-room, etc.

These tactics are as transparent as they are discredited. If you have to lie about what other people are arguing in order to refute it, that's a pretty good sign that you have nothing worthwhile to say.
