Both parties cheerlead still more loudly for Israel's war

As the body count in Gaza piles up, the U.S. Congress acts overwhelmingly to insinuate itself into the war with blind support for Israel.

Little Brother

The incident referenced in the new Turley piece actually occurred in 2004.

-- Little Brother

Yes, I didn't know that until when I read in comments someone said to click the original link.

At any rate, it was like a the worst horror movie scene imaginable reading what happened. A ten year old girl, moving away and terrified, is hit by a bullet in the leg. She is down on the ground, no doubt writhing in pain, as a grown man chases after her, who is probably wearing a Ninja Turtle like outfit. He then proceeds to shoot 16 more bullets into her body. A ten year old baby girl. This insanity is hard to stomach.

Ironic, is it not?

...that the Jews would resort to tactics right out of the Weimer SS's rule book. The gassing rooms aren't employed, but that's about it. They need to give the land back, or this will never end. I don't blame the Palestines one bit. I know what happened in the ghettos of Warsaw and I see no difference at all. Filthy nazi's. Filthy neocon's. Same difference-nationalism.

"the right to exist"

This is another one that flummoxes me.

What does the "right to exist" even mean? Did Nazi Germany have the "right to exist?" What about the Confederate States of America? The Kingdom of Hawai'i?

They exist. They have nukes, a fabulously well-trained and -equipped military, and millions who will fight to the death to defend their homes. There will be no pushing of anyone into the sea with Qassams and Katyushas.

Hamas is a bunch of boodthirsty fuckwits, but this whole focus on their goal being the destruction of Israel is a bit precious. As a wise man once said, I'm sure the goal of the Detroit Lions is to win the Super Bowl.

@Xanthro

They turned it down because it stipulated that all hostilities would cease immediately and no new missiles would be fired -- then once that happened, Israel would withdraw its forces -- then once that was finished, there would be negotiations about opening the borders. It isn't a serious ceasefire agreement, it acknowledges only one party's grievances at the beginning of the hostilities, and Hamas must give up it's one and only bargaining chip before any Israeli troops go anywhere.

Hopefully, the French and Germans will come up with something better and more realistic, and soon. This was a surrender document from Hamas' point of view.

Little Brother...

I tend to ignore these types of stories. Its enough for me that some 1000 children have been killed in the occupied terriories by the Israeli military. That's not including this new batch.

And another question for Glenn Greenwald...

This is off-topic from the Gaza situation, and for that I apologize, but I just saw this on Drudge...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/08/AR2009010803110.html?hpid=topnews

(A U.S. drone, armed with Hellfires, apparently took out an Al-Qaeda-used building in Pakistan, killing several top Al-Qaeda leaders, per WaPo.)

Question for Glenn Greenwald -- if, instead of killing those guys with a pair of Hellfires, we had gone into Pakistan with our own SpecOps, captured them, extracted them via helicopter to Eastern Europe, or Iraq, or Gitmo, and waterboarded them, would the latter be a war crime for which you think prosecution would be in order? Is hitting them with the Hellfires a kind of war crime in your view? Will the Obama Administration swear off the targeting of Al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan? (Obama, as I understand it, says, "No," to the latter. They will target Al Qaeda in Pakistan. Part of the Obama 'more effective war on the real terrorist threat...')

Glenn, please, I'd like to have your comments.

more bad news

The UN stopped urgently needed delivery of food and medical supplies to the population of Gaza after the Israeli troops killed another UN contractor in a UN marked truck. This came today during a three hour cease fire announced by Israel. Yes, during the cease fire.

The International Red Cross now says Israeli troops hindered access to wounded children laying among many dead and without help while being very near to an Israeli position. The Israeli troops, for days, made no attempt to help the wounded kids a few meters away from them.

That my friends is real Holocaust in the making. This is truth and will never need laws that make it illegal to investigate what happened. Ask yourself, what kind of men would do that to children? Hurt children. Dying children. Starving children.

We have seen the "good Israeli" and he is the twin of the 1940s "good German".

humanitarian pause

According to the NYT article ondelette linked to earlier

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/09/world/middleeast/09mideast.html?pagewanted=print

on Thursday Gazan authorities reported 758 people dead, including 257 children and 56 women. Israel says it has killed at least 130 Hamas fighters. That’s some precision! Nearly twice as many children as Hamas fighters.

Israel has agreed to allow a three hour “lull” or “humanitarian pause” every other day…so that Gazans can seek medical help and buy supplies.

How ludicrous is that? I just can’t think of anything to say.

PDA

Indeed, the reasoning always makes me laugh. Israelis obviously think that an Arab Palestine doesn't have any 'right to exist', but it doesn't seem to bother anyone much. There's a very silly movement to make things like [supposed] anti-semitism and not recognizing Israel's right to exist actual crimes against humanity which can justify military action. Its just ridiculous.

Glenn,

Your earlier reference to Noam Chomsky set me on a long odyssey of Chomsky YouTube clips, not the least of which was his old debate with the late William F. Buckley. Much appreciated.

Propaganda galore

Israel started blockading Gaza before the 2005 IDF redeployment and removal of the illegal settlements. The blockade began before Hamas won the elections. Moreover, the redeployment was unilateral. It didn't come as a result of orderly negotiations with the PA, but as a tactical, cynical ploy, designed to save money and resources that would be directed toward the much coveted West Bank and the massive land theft of Palestinian land there. The tedious Likud/neocon mantra of "Israel withdraws and gets rocket attacks in return" is worthy of Der Stürmer.

Another "small" detail the US press never mentions or follows up on:many of the parts for the crude Hamas rockets are actually supplied and smuggled into Gaza by the Israeli Russian Mafia, using former Soviet Union born soldiers who steal the parts from the IDF. Not everything is smuggled in from Egypt.
