Discussing Israel/Gaza on right-wing talk radio

I had an unexpectedly substantive discussion of the Middle East and the "Islamic threat" on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" last night.

The letters thread is now closed.

@GlennGreenwald

I hope, sir, that you didn't take offense at my earlier comment, the one that you said is your "favorite" since you began blogging. I hold your views in very high regard, even if I do occasionally disagree with some of them.

@Paul

I also had mentally pegged DM as a guy.

Hey, I'm a guy's guy, and don't you forget it!

He can't answer those questions, Paul. See, as soon as you embrace Zionism, you lose Judaism. An once you've lost Judaism, all you are doing is stealing land.

The best way I can put it is: Look, being a Jew is not easy. It involves knowing that your failure to keep His commandments are responsible for your estrangement from Him. And it's only human to wonder why God would not offer material help during times of terrible persecution.

We simply have to wait. Until then, God has told us what to do; live as peaceful and brotherly citizens of any land which allows us to. And try to provide an moral and ethical example.

I admit, giving up on God and turning to guns, money and land and political minipulation, serving as servants for the powerful, is much easier than waiting and placing your faith in God. But it won't work, it hasn't worked before.

And I am not gonna start justifying my sins and thefts and murders with "but they did this to us". What other people do to the Jews is their responsibility, and they will have to answer, or not, to God for it.

But what I do, is my responsibility. I have only contempt for those how use the Holacaust to justify anything. Look, if the Hoilacaust can be used to justify founding Israel, than you are saying that the Holacaust, evil, leads to good, the founding of Israel. Sorry, can't go there. You don't get evil out of good.

As I have said before, I will place my faith in God, my own abilities as an individual, and my respect for others, which tells me that people will treat you the way you treat them.

Or are the Zionists now going to tell us that the history of the Jews in America (the Godenah Medina) has been one long tale of persecution?

And I will never, never, hate people based on what I have heard other people did to Jews once upon a time. That way lies madness!

The madness of Zionism. And the falsity. And most of all, the shameful, shameful kvetching!

Do you know, I once got a lecture on anti-semetism from a Jew, just outside of the gatehouse of his gated community, while he rested on the fender on his Mercedes-Benz.

I just love the Zionist logic. That Jews can work with others of good will to live in safety and harmony in their coutries, well, that can't happen, no, any minute the storm troopers are gonna put us in the boxcars! But that Jews will find safety by dispossesing (in co-operation with the area's colonial masters) and stealing the land from its inhabitants, and then holding it by force of arms, that's a good plan! Madness!

And that's from a people who can't even reproduce at a rate which will allow them to increase!

And now, of course, the Zionists have turned to the American Christian ZIonists for succor and support! Well, with Madoff gone, you're gonna need them more than ever!

It's so stupid! They keep telling me the Goyim are going to put us in boxcars, but they completely trust these same Goyim to be their pals and allies eternal in the ME.

As that famous Yiddish singer, Aretha Franklin, once asked: "Who's Zoomin' who?"

If by "Zionist" you mean that I think Israel has a right to exist, then I plead guilty.

It's almost like all of the America Hating keyboard warriors out there think that people that post here were born yesterday and have never had to deal with this kind of mindless drivel.

@ ondelette

Glad it was helpful, good work on forwarding the Keshev analysis to the NYT, for what good it may do.

The Israel-haters might want to do a global analysis of how much money we give to countries around the world

Well, I'm no Israel-hater, but I took your advice anyway. If you were hoping to prove that Israel is not a major recipient of US aid, you made a bad suggestion in asking someone to look it up.

According to he Congressional Research Service, the following fifteen countries are the top recipients of U.S. Foreign Aid for fiscal year 2004, the most recent year of data available.

1) Iraq - $18.44 billion

2) Israel - $2.62 billion

3) Egypt - $1.87 billion

4) Afghanistan - $1.77 billion

5) Colombia - $570 million

6) Jordan - $560 million

7) Pakistan - $390 million

8) Liberia - $210 million

9) Peru - $170 million

10) Ethiopia - $160 million

11) Bolivia - $150 million

12) Turkey - $150 million

13) Uganda - $140 million

14) Sudan - $140 million

15) Indonesia - $130 million

Is that what you heard? That has got to be prize-winner of some sort.

Yeah.

Question Glenn

Glenn,

Hugh Hewitt's position is that Hamas is a terrorist organization that can't be negotiated with and should be destroyed because of their deep seeded, fanatical hatred of Israel that can never be overcome and will always pose a threat. I wonder if Hewitt would apply that logic internally in the US and demand that Klan members be rounded up and shot since they harbor similar deep seeded, fanatical hatred of a number of identifiable groups (African Americans, Jews, etc.) and pose a physical threat. They openly call for the death of those they oppose and even undermining our government. To your point about marginalizing a group, the Klan has less visible power and, generally on a national basis, a negative stigma. Why couldn't that happen to Hamas should Israel begin to make concessions and look for peace. If Hamas needs to be eradicated why not the Klan? What is the difference?
